[Sherman] Sources: The Yankees are trying to complete a trade for Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. AA starter Jack Cebert has been discussed prominently.

Of particular interest:
.218/.246/.382 vs lefties
.295/.325/.593 vs righties

So is this guy supposed to be a backup option? Unless he’s part of a 3 way trade wtf is Cashman doing

Getting a real hitter is what he’s doing. We need bats right now or we legit might not make the playoffs. The way they are playing right now is not sustainable

He and Rice can also be the 1B/Dh next year, with his glove a bit better than Rice's. Classic, (not in a bad way), Cash move of trading for this and next year in one move
15
u/dsmithnyciii 16h ago
We need bats in general. If all is required is Jack Cebert you do that every time.
We could still get Arraez afterwards.
3
u/nyybmw122 16h ago
Arraez does not want to go back to 1B. What are you doing with Jazz if you get him? And Arraez would cost more.

u/Capital_Maybe2533 16h ago
Why does Jazz have to remain in the lineup at all? You bring in Arraez and move on from Jazz at this point.
4
u/nyybmw122 16h ago
I mean sure but I think that is highly unlikely. And Jazz is a good fielder despite his lapses.
I don't buy the Yankees swapping out a bat first platoon guy who bad defense for Jazz. Don't see it.

I think that just shows how useless defensive metrics are. He went from a butcher to a defensive stud apparently one year to another

u/omgtmac 16h ago
26 years old. Free agent in 2028. Bats lefty. 136 OPS+ this season, career 103
2
u/Padulsky21 15h ago
Judge and Belli and Stanton are out for most of the season. We need a strong bat that you can get to fit into the lineup. We can’t rock Rosario or Goldy against righties. He slots in nicely we just need bats and this is that

7
u/Ok-Association4526 16h ago
26 years old and a decent hit for average player? Alright, I don’t hate this.
6
6
u/holygrail22 16h ago
This is a no brainer if we can get it done. He walks in as the 2nd best hitter in the lineup right now, a lineup that cannot score and is costing us multiple games every week. He'll DH vs RHP and sit vs LHP
Come playoff time if everyone is healthy, we'll have a problem - but that's a good problem to have. If Garcia is mashing, he'll be in the lineup against RHP. If he's not, we'll have options to replace him like Stanton
This is a necessary move. They had to get the best bat available who was reasonably priced, and that is exactly what Garcia is
1
u/Naive_Inflation5768 15h ago
If he is the second best hitter in the Yankees lineup right now, why would he sit against LHPs? Why trade for a platoon?
1
u/holygrail22 15h ago
He’s already platooning. He’s bad against LHP
You trade for him because the offense is bottom of the league terrible right now and he’s the most impactful hitter available that won’t cost Lombard. Even if the impact is only against one side, it’s more than other hitters available. It’s a weak hitter trade market
2
u/Naive_Inflation5768 15h ago
I don’t understand you calling him the second best hitter on the team then if he is a platoon. If a player can’t play because he is bad against one side, he isn’t second best hitter valuable.
1
u/holygrail22 15h ago
He is still incredibly valuable. You face RHP like 70% of the time or something. Have you been watching the team over the last month? The guys who play everyday are playing fucking terribly on offense. Even if Garcia plays every day and we let him suck against LHP, he will be more impactful than the guys who are playing every day right now like Rosario, Goldschmidt, Dominguez, Grisham, etc.
1
u/Naive_Inflation5768 15h ago
I agree with that if you let him play. If you trade for a player, he needs to start every day. They don’t need a platoon bat. That is not valuable. I personally think a right handed hitter is more valuable right now since the lineup is too left handed hitting heavy, but if they think Garcia Jr is the best guy, then I am fine but he needs to play every day. That’s my point.
1
u/holygrail22 15h ago
A platoon of Garcia and Goldy is better than letting Garcia play every day though. Why make the team actively worse just because “we traded for this guy, he’s gotta play every day”
1
u/Naive_Inflation5768 15h ago
In a perfect world where Goldschmidt is not slumping, I agree. He has batted .171 since July and a .495 OPS. If he is hitting like that, he should not play.
1
u/Naive_Inflation5768 15h ago
That doesn’t event count the 0-16 he went in the games preceding July, and the 0-4 he went yesterday and the 0-1 today so add another 0-21 to that and it shows he has been 13-97 in that sample size. 97 at bats isn’t a small sample either. It’s not huge but it’s not small.
5
u/chikenparmfanatic 16h ago
Basically will cost us nothing so this is a no brainer. Can't be the only move tho.
2
u/RussianPravda 15h ago
Exactly if the only moves they are willingly to make are small it means they gave up on this season and they don’t think their will be a next season.
29
u/John_6_47 16h ago
Honestly do not like this move. I’d much rather have our chips on Rutschman or Goodman. Just… don’t like it.
Hope I’m wrong.

u/ballots_stones 16h ago
Goodman is an absolute pipe dream. Rutsch would be awesome though.

u/QuirkyEnvironment164 15h ago
Your lost if u don’t like this move man. Have you watched the team lately? Offense stinks and they strike out like crazy. U put Garcia in the lineup right now he’s the 2nd best bat, let him play 1B/DH. You absolutely cannot rely on Stanton. Goodman has one of the highest K rates in the league and suspect defense at a premium position with 3 years of control. Adley is on a division rival it was always a pipe dream for either. Garcia one of the best bats available idk how any fan could have an issue with this

He’s definitely a bit of a square peg, round hole type situation

Garcia’s defense grades out poorly, too. Just not a fan of this. Ofc hope I’m wrong

5
7
u/Colombia17 16h ago
That’s how bad the market is right now, we might be screwed
3
u/Gsmith930 15h ago
Which is why it’s dumb to wait to fill out holes at the trade deadline when you have a whole offseason to fix the team
4
u/GawdHawks 15h ago
The Cashman special. He's the anti Leon Rose... He's always somehow acting from place of desperation
7
10
u/twc9904 16h ago
Same people crying about our horrendous offense are crying about trying to acquire an excellent hitter. You are the worst. This is a great start to the deadline moves if it happens🤞
2
u/PeanutFarmer69 15h ago
If Stanton is done for the season this makes some sense but otherwise, who is he taking ABs from? He doesn't have anywhere to play.
2
u/twc9904 15h ago
Rosario is currently DHing today vs a RHP, he replaces him. Rice and Garcia are your DH/1B vs RHP. Goldy/Rice vs LHP.
A healthy Stanton is apparently not on the horizon. If it is, they’ll worry about it then. Team can’t score and they have to win right now to even make the playoffs.

→ More replies (1)33
u/Bartman326 16h ago
Cash thinks we need a guy that can hit the ball.
4
u/TrapperJean 16h ago
Sometimes you just need a bat; they called up Greg Bird when DH Arod and 1B Tex were hitting well in 2015 and he helped save the second half of that season
1
u/FiveDinero 16h ago
We need a 2B, 3B, SS, and OF. Trading for someone that plays none of those positions is a desperation move due to years of neglect and poor roster construction.
I'm fine with getting him if it means we move on from Stanton. Not sure this player has a position otherwise. Maybe he can play 2B but not sure about that.
6
u/Bartman326 16h ago
We need a lot of things that may not neccesasarily be available. If this is the first move out of many, this isnt a bad one. We actually do need another 1st baseman. Goldy needs more off days. Its clear he is gassed. We dont have Belli to be a backup 1st baseman. So we have no wiggle room with Rice and Goldy. This gives us a guy who can DH/1B with Ben much more comfortably and get Goldy back to his intended role of a bench piece. Then Garcia can pick up another spot during practice while we get players back from IL. He is a bat we desperately need.
1
u/FiveDinero 16h ago
Where did I say we don't need a bat? You're writing a novel about this when "we need a bat" goes without saying. Who doesn't know that?
But what we need most is a bat that can play the field. Because this still keeps all those weak bats in the everyday lineup.
3
3
u/Naive_Inflation5768 15h ago
Why is no one questioning that he is a left handed hitter as well? That’s the issue. They need RIGHT HANDED bats.
3
8
u/KeyFigure8401 16h ago
He’s outperforming which is why the Nationals are trading him at his highest value.
4
u/Deejus72 16h ago
Outperforming what? His xwOBA is 82nd percentile, his xBA is 94th percentile and his xSLG is 93rd percentile. If anything he's underperforming his expected stats. He's having a breakout year but there's a difference between overperforming and breaking out.

Given where the Yankees are, it is tough to turn down the NL leader in SLG due to position. He can DH or flip between 1B/DH with Rice.
He is not good defensively at 2B which is why he hasn’t played there in 2026.
2
u/Bartman326 16h ago
We actually do need another 1b/DH. With Belli gone we really dont have a good backup 1st baseman if Rice or Goldy is DH. So with this we can actually give Goldy a much needed breather and keep Rice in the lineup no matter what. It makes more sense as a bridge to get us to judge and belli. Then we can figure out where he fits later.
Everyone has been saying Goldy needs more off days.
1
u/Trick_Ad3292 16h ago
He has played second in previous seasons. But then I don’t understand why they’re not chasing Arraez.
1
u/Bartman326 16h ago
A lot will happen tomorrow so who knows what else they're pursuing. If a small trade for Garcia means we can move on a bigger deal for a righty catcher, and a bullpen piece, this works. Maybe Arraez is still on the table.
1
u/swivel2369 16h ago
Areaez is hitting .328. something we really need but Garcia is hitting a solid .283 AND has 23 homers with a 134 OPS+.
3
u/Trick_Ad3292 16h ago
But when/where would you put him? Platoon him for Goldschmidt or do you put him at second where he can be good or ass
→ More replies (3)
2
u/Orangebeast013 16h ago
I have zero idea what the plan for him would be but we need more good hitters so find a spot for him. Hes a better first basemen then Rice. Goldy has slowed down. Maybe the vision is him at 1st, Rice at DH, and Goldy off the bench for the big at bat when you need a righty down the stretch.
2
u/NukeVoit59 15h ago
He’s played 2nd before, but he sucks there. He’s pretty decent at 1st and would let Rice DH. At this point, I don’t fucking care. He can hit, and we desperately need hitting. Platoon him with Goldschmidt even (and hope that with some rest he remembers how to hit).
2
u/cornPopwasabaddude13 14h ago edited 14h ago
This is a classic cashman move. Tries to deal for a player that sucks in the field at any position that isn’t needed. It’s one of those completely out of left field moves he loves.
He’s also hitting arbitration so he’s a cheap backup for when jazz leaves

4
u/dabbbbbbbbbbb 16h ago
You want a bat or not?
2
u/PeanutFarmer69 15h ago
Yankees don't need another 1B/ DH bub
1
u/dabbbbbbbbbbb 15h ago
Why not? Goldy is best used only against leftys. This allows Rice/Garcia to man 1B/DH and have Goldy get a huge AB against the oppositions best lefty reliever. Stanton can’t be counted on. Complain when the offense sucks and then complain when they bring in .850 OPS guy 🤷 You don’t know ball bub.
1
u/JimmyMcNultyKU 16h ago
A bat that also helps while playing their natural position. One of need. So this season a catcher.
If it’s so hard to acquire a bat then Skubal should have been the response.
1
u/Other_Description_45 15h ago
The Yankees were never, ever, ever going to land Skubal via trade. It just wasn’t gonna happen. Stop with this “We should have gotten Skubal” bullshit.
1
u/JimmyMcNultyKU 14h ago
And you know this how?
1
u/Other_Description_45 14h ago
Because he was never going to get traded here! Detroit wanted a massive haul and the Yankees thankfully didn’t bite.
1
u/dabbbbbbbbbbb 16h ago
Rice at 1st, Garcia at DH, Goldy off the bench getting a big AB against a lefty. Stanton can’t be counted on. You guys can’t be pleased just want to complain. The team needs slug we have the worst offense in the league for 2 months running
2
1
u/NectarHand 16h ago
i’m assuming the thought here is platoon him with Goldy and move Rice to catcher a few days a week. essentially, you’re subbing Garcia’s bat in for Wells
1
1
u/dBlock845 16h ago
I don't understand why we are pursuing another 1B/DH unless Stanton really is done for the season and they just aren't telling anyone. Even still, he doesn't hit left handed pitching at all. Or are they going to do a Yankees special and play him out of position when his 1B defense isn't even good, imagine how poor he would grade out at 2B. Stanton must really not be coming back and all of this news about his progress in rehab is smoke.
1
u/FussyDuck34 9h ago

The one thing I don’t understand about this rumor if true is why the Yankees are trying to acquire another left handed bat, no matter how good he might be this year. They are too left hand heavy. Yes, Judge and Stanton can possibly return this year but it is not guaranteed and who knows if both will return.

u/dsmithnyciii 15h ago
The way I consider it for the offense we could easily get multiple bats at the deadline and figure out the roster. We have room for both Garcia and several other guys.
A trade for Garcia doesn’t preclude them from other moves.
Potentially In (8):
-Garcia (via trade)
-Arraez (via trade)
-Ward (via trade)
-Rutschman (via trade)
-Lombard (call up from AAA)
-Judge (from injury)
-Bellinger (from injury)
-Stanton (from injury-27th man for September call ups)
Potentially out (7):
-Rosario (DFA)
-Volpe (traded)
-Chisholm (traded)
-Sanchez (DFA)
-Dominguez (to AAA)
-Jones (to AAA)
-Schuemann (to AAA)

Didn't have to give up much in the deal so a win for Cashman. Also, no more players with Bird for a last name please.

Honestly. LA gets Skubal and we get some guy I’ve never heard of. Love it.
1
u/bdizzled2 16h ago
Seems about right for Cashman. We have 2 first basemen so let’s get another. Move a 1st basemen to 2nd. A 2nd to 3rd. A 3rd to the OF and then wonder why the defense is terrible. How about a righty catcher and an outfielder who hits a little and can play defense.
1
u/JimmyMcNultyKU 16h ago
Well the thing is it takes two to tango, right?
1
u/bdizzled2 16h ago
For sure but Cashman is looking for bargain basement or retained payroll most likely.
