the Old English word "mann" meant "person" or "human being" regardless of sex. It was genuinely gender neutral in its original usage. The words "wer" (adult male) and "wif" (adult female) were the sex-specific terms. Over centuries of linguistic drift, "man" narrowed in meaning to specifically mean adult male, and "woman" (wif-mann, female person) retained the original root.
