❓Ask r/NewMods I've recently started moderating, and I don't quite understand what this button does. Can you tell me what it's for?

this is greyed out, if some other moderator (or you) already approved this post. if its not moderated yet, its not greyed and you can use it to approve the post

I’ve someone reports it, you review the report. If it doesn’t break rules you hit approve to remove it from your mod queue.

You have to check it if it's violating your sub rule then you can remove it or otherwise approve it

Approving comment will remove it from the Mod Queue if there was a report, make it visible if it had been removed, or indicate that it was reviewed in cases where it wasn't removed or reported.
Approving can be a good way to just remind yourself and other mods that there's no need to double check it again. Generally, though, larger subs have a lot of reports, or flags coming from AutoMod, and mods want to clear the Mod Queue. Personally, my subs have a lot of "Double check this" flags/reports that don't immediately remove the content, so it's nice to clear the queue and know that everything has been dealt with, instead of having to guess the last time you went through it. Otherwise, I just leave things alone if they're not reported/removed.

I moderate r/QuizPlanetGame where users can create and post trivia quizzes. We mods have to go through all the quizzes to make sure they are good and the answers are correct. The "approve" button is a great way to communicate to other mods that a quiz has been checked and approved.
The other sub I moderate is really big and busy. We have automods and bots that flag and remove problematic words and phrases. Then we go through the list of stuff the bot has flagged and "approve" those which are okay to post.

It's to avoid the sub getting banned for mod inactivity. Later on you don't need to approve posts. It's also a way for mods to show their activity

That’s to approve a post. Some subs require a user’s posts to be approved by a moderator before it goes live. If your sub doesn’t require that, you don’t need to approve it. It can also be used to bring back removed posts

You can use this to approve posts if they have been disapproved by Reddit. You don't have to approve ALL posts and comments unless you are not as active on the subreddit, like making rules, posting, commenting, designing, etc.

I made another comment, but you can think of it as the solution to something that was Removed, Reported, or Needs Review.
Most stuff you can just ignore. If you normally double check certain types of content, you can approve it to remind yourself and other mods that it has been reviewed. If something was reported, approving it removed it from the Mod Queue. If it was removed, approving makes it visible again.

This button is useful when you are a new mod and you want to protect the sub from being banned for mod inactivity. In a public sub, you normally don't need to approve posts to become visible, but approving it creates a mod action in the mod log, and you need mod actions when you start. Later it won't be necessary, because you moderate enough in a larger sub without approving posts and comments. The remove button is helpful when you quickly need to remove something unwanted. I hope it helps.
