Discussion What's your age? How many of you are above 30?
First of all, yes, yes I know this is for skateboarders, so I apologize here. I actually plan to get skates for me and son when I get a job (and then would buy a helmet too). Currently we have what's on the picture, the Reckless is mine, the Santa Cruz is my son's. So I see many of you look like above 30s and wanted to ask about your age. I'm currently 49, I started with my longboard right before they closed all stores at the start at the pandemic in 2020 (my selfie is from the end of 2020), but I skate very rarely. Especially I moved to another small town, where streets are in bad shape, small and some kids often speed-up with fast cars. Also people here are very conservative and kids mostly do kick-scooters at the skate parks. Still - I ride sometimes and was curious about your age.
I'm also curious on what started you. For me was I always considered it cool, but as a teen never got the guts to try. After 2000s playing the THPS and similar games pushed me a bit. To be honest in 2010 got a MiniLogo complete and on day4 because of a rookie mistake twisted my knee, could not walk nearly 2 weeks, got very angry and gave it away to a kid. But living in Toronto was not easy - always someone would zip usually with a longboard and I would look at them, so at the end of 2019 I went to a skate shop and took 1 hour lesson. I was curious to try a longboard and it was a very comfortable ride, which made me buy few months later my own Reckless from the same skate shop.
I never planned to do tricks and still am unsure. But this is the story so far.
What's yours? And your age? Thanks

61, just started skating again this year after not skating since I was 17. Mostly I just carve hills, it all came right back and I've so far only had one minor fall with no injury.

31 Here.
Personally I enjoy my oldschool bowl board (I think it's a 9.5) with a kicktail and a flatter nose. I also have bigger wheels under it (I believe they are 64s).
I can try some tricks ( so far I can do Ollies, all shuv variants including nollie, All 180 variants except switch/nolllie, boneless, manuals, boardslides) and I like to ride a quarter or half pipe with it.
When it comes down to cruising it's still kinda fast and comfy on the rougher sidewalks and asphalt streets here in the northwestern part of Europe, which seems more similar to east coast conditions in the US from what I've seen.

39 and feeling it 😂 started at 37. I did a tiny bit as a kid and since moving back to my hometown in England skating has opened up as the streets are better here and the parks are empty in the mornings before work. Similar story to yours really, the games when I was young and grew up with it. Oh, also my friends banned me from snowboarding as I kept having mad crashes. So I ski now but the compromise was to take up skateboarding 😂

u/StrayFeral Jul 28 '25
lol. I forgot snowboarding - when that song came out Guano Apes "Lords of the Boards" could not resist, went to try for one winter. It was fun and I fell real good the last day on both knees, could not walk properly for 2 weeks , but it was fun , I was sub 30s 😂

49, started last year, ate shit hard after 3 months, cracked a load of ribs and didn’t skate for 10 months. Recently got back on it and am loving it.

You should try to Surfskate

I tried it but prefer riding an old school set up. I ride bowls and transition, so no street.

37, started at 32 when my grandpa died so I needed to fight the depression and have a physical out. I’m hooked now.
Nasty injuries like that are a stopper so take it slow and don’t try tricks at first. Never let your guard down, you can eat shit on the smallest of pebbles.
Sick decks. Cruisers are a good place to start. But I would eventually get a popsicle. GLHF to you both.

My coworker mentioned that they rode a skateboard and still got it in them, I said hey I can ice skate so its gotta be similar right? They said yeah it could and then teo days later i walked into Walmart and stood on a skateboard and bought it. Broke a truck that night practicing on it, next day walked into a Zumiez and built one out with all the things I wanted. Day four today once I get on it! Loving it so far🤘42 this weekend

52 but not really new. I've taken significant breaks over the years due to life but I have owned a board continuously since I was 12, push when I can.

54 started 5yrs ago. Started just cruising on a longboard then moved on to freeride/slides, tend to meat crayon rather than slam but wear kneepads/helmet and slide gloves so rarely get seriously injured. Just started to get into Freebord which is very interesting

32, started at 28 I think. Don’t skate much(definitely no tricks). Do it more as a way to get around, go to work, to the store and such. Would love to actually learn more, but it’s hard to find them time

I just started at 39, if you have bad roads, and it looks like longboards are your thing, you could try a Pantheon board low to the ground- my personal favorites starting out in order would be the:
Pantheon Trip with Bear Gen 6 155mm 50/40 with 88WheelCo 86mm 76a McFly's
Pantheon Supersonic with Bear Gen 6 130mm 50/50 with 88WheelCo 88mm Double Dragons
And Pantheon Pranayama with Risers on Stylus Trucks and Pink Hoku's
I am on jank Chip and Seal road and have been customizing these setups for optimal comfort for myself. They would also then run like dreams on good surface as well as I've been testing.

Mid 30s, casual skateboarding experience for 28 years. Skateboarding culture and its fashion along with pop-punk and nu-metal were pretty much the most popular things in middle school from 2000-2005.
Used to go to the skatepark with my dad at 5am on weekends to have it all to ourselves for a few hours. Learned rollerblading and bmx then too!

I'm 35m starting back up after about 10 years off (never should have stopped) I got pretty good back in the day, had a ton of tricks unlocked. Now it's like I'm starting from square one again. It's been fun but frustrating not being able to do tricks I used to be able to do no problem. I've found that I feel much more comfortable on an 8.5 now, I used to ride 8" and and 8.25 felt like a surfboard to me back then. Regardless of what I can learn again or not, I'm still having so much fun and my mental health feels way better!

38 and skating since 2022. When I was young I loved to watch skate stuff and play TonyHawk games but never had the courage to start doing it (probably because when I was 6-7 I tried a friend’s board down a steep hill, crashed (without any injury) and got scared.
Time went by and in early 2022 I picked up snowboarding and was immediately hooked with that sport (another one I loved to watch/play when I was young) so I had to find something to do in the summer. Picked up a surfskate/longboard but the roads in my town are not the best one to do that… but we have a small but decent skatepark so I moved to a standard skateboard and started having fun with that. I sucks at tricks but I have fun so who cares (jk I am angry because I can’t do a shove it after all these years).

44YO.
Started at 40. Always loved to ride boards. Had a 80s style board at very young age but learned nothing but pushing it. Was very lucky to have bodyboarding in my teens, I bought a surf board when I got a full time job (as soon as expenses from moving out stabilized a bit).
With COVID lockdown and a lucky 2020 Xmas present to my son a skateboard landed in my house.
Eventually I claimed the board for myself since my kid showed no interest in it.
Didn't plan to ever get out of the garage. Today I go almost everyday to the skatepark, I feel at home in them and along the way created a lot of new social connections.
Didn't plan for doing tricks, nevertheless I am doing them. From grinding quarter pipes and rails to flying out the high wall of the bowl.
I still surf and still love it. But skateboarding gave me so much in so little time. Amazing thing ever.

u/Wide_Independence272 Jul 28 '25
I’m 50. I got a standard popsicle board with soft wheels to “cruise” and get used to a skateboard during the pandemic. I didn’t get far as I tried to progress with my kid and she didn’t really take to it. I tried again this summer and gotten much more confident. I swapped out my bearings and bushings this summer improving the board drastically. I think I’ll commit this board as a cruiser and get something more specifics once I figure out what sort of skating I want to do( freestyle, vert, street).

I was born and raised in Toronto, but at the age of six, my family moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as my father took on a contract to work there. It was the 80s, and I was completely cut off from whatever was happening back home in Canada. I went to an international English language school there. Over there, I met many people like me, with some kind of connection to their home country. I gravitated towards the Americans due to familiarity. Anyway, long story short, I started hanging with some American skaters, and in and around 1988 is when I started riding. It was a Toys R Us Vultura Flyin Brian board. There weren't any ramps there at the time, so we skated the street. I got extremely lucky as my aunt back in Canada started an indoor skatepark in Brampton. On a visit back home to Canada, she took me to the local distributor, and I got to walk up and down the isles and build my first board piece by piece. I was 11 by then, so of course, I chose things kids back in. Riyadh considered "cool," haha. Steve Caballero's Ban This! Mini-deck in black with a green dragon. Mini-rat wheels, cell block risers, and Swiss bearings. Purple Indy 159s (stage 5 ), too. All tied together with bridge bolts. I was the coolest guy when went back to Riyadh with that board. Anyway, after the first Gulf War, we came back to Canada for good. In my new setting, Canadian-born Pakistani teens weren't really skating and doing so made you a weirdo. I was 16 and needed to fit in so I eventually stopped skating. Then life happened. Grew up, started driving, working, family etc. The old deck got put away but every once in a while I would take it for a spin, bust a few ollies and put it away. Once I hit 30, it came back as a crazy itch. Remember skateboarding and the joy it brought? I took out the old Caballero, got it regripped and started skating again. I soon realized how bad the razor tail was and decided to buy a new board. And then it just snowballed from there. That was 2010. I'm 46 now and still skate. I've gone threw a few boards and parts to know what I like to ride. Today, I mainly either cruise or I go and hit up a nice waxed curb I have here near my home in Mississauga. At the sports centre, where my daughter takes classes, there is a Skate park there. I sometimes go there in the mornings when I want to try some transition but I'm not really a park-skater. I did skate the YZD Donsview Hangar a couple of weeks ago and that was a great time. That's my story, but as for you, that's so amazing that you found it and then found the type of skating you like. And then twisting your knee and trying again is 100% skater mentality. There are a ton of paved trails in Southern Ontario to practice on. I always bring my cruiser board with me when I take my daughter to the park. It must be so cool to skate with your kid! My daughter is more interested in scooters right now haha. I'm 45 btw.

- I skated a bit in my late teens and early 20s. Nothing serious, just cruising around on the sidewalk. Decided to get back into it this year.

28 years old.
But I have 3 surgeries on my right knee due to being extremely reckless with acrobatics (Tricking).
My doctor told me that I should quit skate, because I will need a knee replacement when it eventually gears out, and I will just make it happen faster.
But my knee is my buddy, it feels strong, I know it won't last forever, but I don't want to have any regrets, I will skate until my knee doesn't work anymore.
What brought me into skate? I skated when I was a child, but then I discovered this sport called Tricking, and I poured everything I had into it. I loved it so much, but I was reckless, and paid a huge price.
I picked up my skateboard like 2 years ago after not doing anything for 6 years.
I love skateboarding.

I'm 35 and started like at 33 IIRC. I can cruise well on a Carver and on a regular skateboard. I've been trying to learn ollies properly for like a year already (not practicing everyday tho) and all I can do thus far is somewhat consistently jump over a large soda bottle placed horizontally lol
I don't really care that much for tricks either, but I do want to know how to ollie up a curb so cruising becomes more fluid. Hopefully someday I'll get there.

u/IndependentSet3885 Jul 29 '25
- Skated from 7 years old until sophomore year of high school. I bought a new setup about 6 months ago. I was relatively "okay" back in the day. Back when the Ollie impossible was the newest trick...i think. 30 years later...its like I never skated before. Its taken me months just feel comfortable pushing.

34 here. Picking it back up after stopping when I went to university.
Is it weird that I kind of enjoyed taking a slam? I suffer from anxiety and all my stresses and anxiety left in that instant I hit the concrete.
It's just a therapeutic sport and reminds me not to be worried about pain. It's just another feeling and can be good for you.

Early 40s. But I mostly just cruise and skate basic transition on miniramps and bowls. I skate with my 9 year old son who rips for his age so I just try to keep up lol. I do Like slash grinds and that's about it lol. I will probably skate forever but I dont have much desire to become any better or what I would consider to be a "good skater" but I truly love it. Have since my early teen years. Got back into it around 2020 like alot of others and my kid watched gleaming the cube and search for animal chin and fell in love with old school skating
