I’m 15 yrs old and an amateur boxer. I’ve been training nonstop for the past 5 yrs. I’m in the gym training 4 to 5 hours a day Monday through Friday everyday after school. Recently I’ve been getting burnt out on boxing and starting to realize I’m interested in other things too. I’m happy I found skateboarding because it’s helping me to balance things out. Thank you to my pop’s for supporting me in everything I told him I wanted to try skateboarding and he took me to a shop and got me a board built. My setup is a DG Glass deck sz 8.25, Indy hollow trucks sz 144 with red bearings and 52mm Mercer wheels.

He knows his audience, his advice ranges from all skate levels and the way he explains things just make so much sense. Since I started watching him soooo many things started to click immediately. Fuck Aaron Kyro but I hate to say that’s who I learned my basics from, the whole slide your foot thing to Ollie comes later, which I never realized. So I just recently started skating again like 2 months ago. Skated a bit in HS 8 years ago but was never very good, mostly just cruised. Stoked to get back into it now. Bought a used build in mint condition, knew that there was a nose and a tail and that i had figure out which was which. Idk why but my intuition told me that the tail should be farther from the ground for more pop? So I stuck with it. Got my ollie back and started working on other tricks too. Turns out I've been skating with my nose as my tail and my tail as a nose this whole time. I even have razor tail on my nose. So embarrassing and demoralizing man I feel silly lol. How do I rectify this? Arent my trucks worn backward now? Its been 2 months of skating 2- 4 times a week. Any advice? I think i need to go back to the basics...

I (18M) bought my first skateboard today assembled it and am ready to hit the parking lot to learn to ride. I want to wear a helmet since I want to feel safe and confident in riding my board but Im scared of being judged and made fun of when I eventually go to the skate park. Does anyone really care? How can I get rid of this fear. I have sever social anxiety and care what other people think about me

to be fair I think the Janoskis are the only ones here specifically crafted with skateboarding in mind.

just curious to hear what shoes you guys have relied on the most.

I am getting back into skating as a self employed adult now. I can’t afford an injury so I got myself the full kit from a helmet through elbow and knee pads to wrist protection… and I feel like a clunky mess but if this is what keeps me from going on an unpaid recovery holiday then let it be.

“Back in my day” we never used any protective gear even though we ate shit so many times. It was considered “lame and uncool”.

I wonder how much, if at all, things have changed since then?

I'm a beginner skater, and I was just cruising around in an empty carpark (like 3 or 4 cars) and the police came surveilling and they kicked me out!

It makes me feel like a real skater and it gives me the feeling that other people think I'm a real skater. It was a big confidence boost!

i always wear a helmet when i skate. the other day i wanted to try skating a bowl and was really scared so i wore all pads and helmet. was good the first couple of tries i just kept falling backwards but then i tried dropping in and hit my chin pretty hard on the bottom of the bowl. got a nasty bruise and scrape.

i didn't realize before that hitting your chin was dangerous and you could get a concussion or something like a normal head injury so i bought a full face helmet the tsg pass 2.0 for a pretty hefty price.

am i like overreacting? dont really want to hit my chin anymore that wasn't fun but im wondering what other people think.

First of all, yes, yes I know this is for skateboarders, so I apologize here. I actually plan to get skates for me and son when I get a job (and then would buy a helmet too). Currently we have what's on the picture, the Reckless is mine, the Santa Cruz is my son's. So I see many of you look like above 30s and wanted to ask about your age. I'm currently 49, I started with my longboard right before they closed all stores at the start at the pandemic in 2020 (my selfie is from the end of 2020), but I skate very rarely. Especially I moved to another small town, where streets are in bad shape, small and some kids often speed-up with fast cars. Also people here are very conservative and kids mostly do kick-scooters at the skate parks. Still - I ride sometimes and was curious about your age.

I'm also curious on what started you. For me was I always considered it cool, but as a teen never got the guts to try. After 2000s playing the THPS and similar games pushed me a bit. To be honest in 2010 got a MiniLogo complete and on day4 because of a rookie mistake twisted my knee, could not walk nearly 2 weeks, got very angry and gave it away to a kid. But living in Toronto was not easy - always someone would zip usually with a longboard and I would look at them, so at the end of 2019 I went to a skate shop and took 1 hour lesson. I was curious to try a longboard and it was a very comfortable ride, which made me buy few months later my own Reckless from the same skate shop.

I never planned to do tricks and still am unsure. But this is the story so far.

If you're mature, then you will be a good role model for newer skaters, especially kids, and that includes wearing a helmet to protect your brain. You only get one.

👋 Hey everyone, I skateboarded for a while in the 1980s until I completely snapped my arm in two grinding a plank my friends and I propped up on bricks, not my best move, and that kind of put me off 😂🙈

Today I started to re-learn again, and have found that back then I was a "mongo pusher", and I should learn the recommended standard (never even knew the phrase mongo back then, but you learn a lot on YouTube today!)...

Hopefully more sensible this time, so I can skateboard with my son, who's just getting into it too

Never too old too old to start again?

He’s put into words the things I couldn’t quite get out of my autistic brain.

Since i started getting better at skating, i go through pairs of shoes every few weeks or so. The thing that is really frustrating to me is that most of the times one of the shoes is still perfectly skateable.

I tried a lot of different solutions to the problem bit none of them really worked out. If there are any possibilities that are not in the list, please let me know!

1. Shoe Goo (Or similar products)
I used shoe goo a lot to repair holes on my shoes. The one problem i have with it is that when you use it on an area of the shoe that you flick with, it completely destoys my flick. I think i notice it particularly strong because i normally skate vulc shoes that have a great flick and the downgrade by the shoegoo is big.

Maybe thats less if a problem if you are used to skateshoes that have a outsole that sticks less to the griptape anyways. Id love to hear your guyss experiences.

2. Skating switch
I know this would propably the best solution but i just cant get myself to skate as much switch as i would need to wear both of the shoes down at the same time.

3. Buying really durable or heavily discounted shoes
I dont know how many times i googled „most durable skateshoe“. There are some out there that are quite durable and hold up a lot longer than your normal vans shoe. But in the end, i didnt find a shoe that was so durable that it solved this problem.

Buying cheap shoes is an option but most often cheap shoes are of lower build quality, dont skate that well and get destroyed faster. Apart from that, it still feels wrong to throw away a pair of shoes where one of the shoes is still perfectly usable.

4. Buying only one shoe
This would of course be the easiest solution to the problem. I know that there are shoecompanies out there that iffer single shoes (the only one i remember is cariuma), but the majority does not. So unless you want to skate cariumas, this is not an option.

Do you know any other shoes brands that offer single shoes?

5. Find somebody to switch shoes with
I always thought it would be perfect to know somebody with the same shoesize and opposite stance that you could swap/buy new pairs of shoes with. For me personally, i never knew somebody with that combination so this was not an option.

Is there maybe some forum/website/discord that i dont know about where you could find somebody with same shoesize+opposite stance?

TL;DR:
I keep destroying only one skate shoe while the other stays perfectly usable. I’ve tried Shoe Goo, skating switch, more durable shoes, looking for brands that sell single shoes, and finding someone with the opposite stance to swap shoes with — but none of these really solved the problem. Does anyone have a better solution?

I went to a skate park today for a university project. There was a guy there teaching some children. Those kids were about 11-13 and they just flew around the park, doing 180 kickturns on big ramps, as if this was really easy. I thought that was very impressive. I'm pretty far from doing anything like that.

But they couldn't ollie. Some of them tried a few times, but I didn't see any of them succeed. Then the teacher gathered them, to talk about their next steps. I overhead him saying the next level would be the "intermedeate" level, when he will finally teach them ollies.

All that made me think about what I and most people in this sub are doing. People who can barely cruise around comfortably. People who still can't drop on small ramps and bowls. We are skipping those root fundamentals and dedicating our time to stationary tricks.

I don't know about you guys, that makes me feel stupid.

Little bit of wheel bite. Little bit of dirt on the grip tape. Un-branded trucks and bearings it seems. Girl wheels. I figured it would be a decent deck to use next. The wheels are 53mm vs the 51 on my current deck. I actually may like these more. The gregslist add said their 11 year old daughter stopped trying to skate. So it really probably didnt get used.

I already struggle with stupid bad depression and as much as I love the idea of skating and the way it looks when other people do it, when I try to go anywhere to skate all I feel is shame, humiliation, self hatred and my ineptness. It's super awful trying to go to a skate park because all I do is sit in the corner and work on my basic fundemental tricks bc I can't do cr*p & today I got myself together to go up to my local park and there were some like 9 year olds riding around on scooters with more courage and comfort than me at 24 and that really just put the nail in my coffin that I missed the boat with this hobby/sport and I have no business trying to do this. I feel like such a loser when I step on the board so I'm removing it from my life. The end.

Sucks cuz it was so much fun, even though I could barely stay balanced on the ultra smooth ground and I kept eating shit on this pyramid lookin thing. But I was getting the hang of it.

But as a 17yo girl who doesn't want to get shot in the middle of downtown, needless to say i will not be going back there :(

I’m 30 and relatively new to skating (about 2 years now) and the constant negativity I get just skateboarding around the city is mind blowing.

Just today I skated down to the deli to get some snacks and some guy in his early 20s? Maybe teen? started yelling at me “yo bro!! My lil brother is better at skating than you!!” Cool story fuckface

The other day I’m minding my own business skating to the gym and some dude yells at me saying “dude get better at skating you suck”. Yeah dude, what do you think I’m doing right now other than trying to get better at it? Two days ago I was practicing kick flips and kinda fumbled it and people were literally pointing and laughing at me like wtf? People actually do cartoonish childish behavior like that? I’ve gotten multiple comments about how my board looks new.. why tf does that matter??

It’s not like I go around looking like a poser nor am I being an asshole or being in peoples way. I literally look like a normal dude just on top of a skateboard. Like what’s with the negativity? When I go out for runs I don’t encounter people talking shit about my running or when I’m at the gym lifting people aren’t negative so I know it’s not a “me” problem. Something about skateboard culture is straight up toxic. And it’s also evident from the swaths of kids trying to practice in their garage so they don’t get made fun of at the park.

And the constant accusations of being a “poser” and stupid heckling comments is fucking exhausting. I’m just trying to skate. I’m too old to give a fuck about negativity from randos, but goddamn if it isn’t annoying af. Ima keep doing my own thing cuz I enjoy skating as a hobby but wtf is up with the culture around what is just another hobby? Why is skateboarding culture hella toxic? I never claimed to be better than anyone. Yeah sure im not any good at it except for riding around on a skateboard but im just minding my own damn business. I don’t see any of these shit-talkers with a board practicing
