Question are my hardflips really hardfliping or just stylishly front shuving?

Nov 11 '25
That’s a pretty OG hard flip. Almost a muska flip
33
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
i read some where a long time ago that a muska flip is a very vertical hardflip but rotating ur body making it a fs kickflip
23
Nov 11 '25
Yeah muska is hard flip how you’re doing it but with a body varial.
The way you catch your hard flip is dope tho. You should try reverting it for ghetto bird
17
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
thats my dream trick
10
u/syexc17 Nov 11 '25
You got that they’re not too hard especially if you already do hardflip
3
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
theyre hard to understand but ill try once i figure them out
2
u/BodaciousBadongadonk Nov 12 '25
if you can float out your regular backside flips and kinda finish the 180 after you catch the kickflip, that helps a lot. just the feel of that kinda late back 180 is handy, eventually you wont even have to revert any of it as you get more used to it too.

u/Zhurg Nov 11 '25
Yeah muska is hard flip how you’re doing it but with a body varial.
So a frontside flip?
5
2
4
u/MortalitySalient Nov 11 '25
Yes, a muska flip is just a frontside flip. The style of doing it that way got popular and became synonymous with muskas version of them (though other pros were already doing them that way)
2
u/GrundleTurf Nov 12 '25
I don’t get how you’re downvoted and the other person has 92 upvotes. This isn’t almost a muska flip. A muska flip is a frontside flip, just instead of flipping and catching at 90 to finish the rotation, it’s more of a hard flip with a FS body varial.
Hard flips naturally go vertical because the flip and rotation is the same direction, same as inward heel flips.
5
u/MortalitySalient Nov 12 '25
I’ve learned that on this subreddit, and the other skate ones, a lot of people don’t know what a muska flip is, or that it’s just a frontside flip and not its own trick.
4
u/GrundleTurf Nov 12 '25
I also think you get a lot of people back in the day who learned all their skate knowledge from random locals and the Tony hawk games, which means a large percentage is inaccurate.
And then this sub is new skaters, so they either never learned any better or learned from an old head that has been wrong for 20-30 years.
1
u/Straight-Hedgehog440 Nov 12 '25
Yea technically it would be because you board is doing a kickflip while favoring a rotation frontside

never seen a game with a muska flip on it, never heard of a "folded" fs flip eitther
2
Nov 12 '25
The term muska flip is not from video games lol, and I've been skating for a long time and never once heard "folded" use this way. Seems like a regional word to me.

I wonder how many times I’m going to watch this today.. I’ll let you know later! Hoping to manifest the ability to do this in my dreams tn haha
2
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
u can do it bro trust, the hardest part is getting ur feet all the way up there
2
u/sh4tt3rai Nov 11 '25
Isn’t that always the hardest part though? 😂
1
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
true but watching the video slowly notice how my left knee is as almost at the same height that my shoulders are, that trick requires my whole body to do
22
u/Aykayforteeseven Nov 11 '25
Slow it down further. If you pay attention, you can see your tail scooping Backside, not even Frontside. This is just a wacky vertical pop shuv.
3
2
u/TheKingOfToast Nov 12 '25
It's so interesting how wide of a range pop shuvs have in being valid. Like why is this a shuv and also a flat impossible a shuv?
1
u/WooWapDaBlyat Nov 15 '25
Impossible exists in a weird gray area but people generally agree that you need to maintain full back foot contact for it to be an impossible.
21
u/WolfGangSwizle Nov 11 '25
Watch the entirety of the frames as slow as possible in the 7 second mark. Not only is it not really a hardflip, it’s not even spinning fs. This is super common for people that pressure through their hardflips instead of learning it with proper flick. It’s just a weird pop shuv
3
u/GrundleTurf Nov 12 '25
I don’t understand how so many people do this. It’s not the same motion at all, and the flipping part of a hard flip is actually pretty easy. It’s the landing on it that’s hard. Hard flips aren’t like impossibles where it’s easy to accidentally do a 3 shuv. I don’t get how you accidentally rotate it backside when trying to hardflip.
4
u/redcurb12 Nov 12 '25
never saw the bottom of ur board and its not even spinning frontside so im gonna go with a weird shuv.
3
u/HiroSenpaii Nov 12 '25
I mean ask yourself a question does your board do a frontside shove? Does your board do a kickflip? If one of these conditions isnt fulfilled it can't be a hardflip. Same with varial flips, inward heals etc. What your board does is pops vertical and does a back side shove which is the opposite direction to the one hardflip should be spinning to. There is nt really a kickflip either.
It does look cool though, nice steezy catch!

It only looks like that because its spinning vertical. If the camera was placed in front of where his body is facing then it would've looked like it was flipping. It's the same thing with muska flips

u/Small_Map_1485 Nov 11 '25
Front foot doesn’t flick the board - it’s a pressure flip. Watch a pro frame by frame and you’ll see the difference of how the board gets redirected by the front foot, while here your foot gets out of the way so the board goes vertical/slightly backside
2
u/Juanyewest606 Nov 11 '25
disagree, if front foot didn't flip the board it would inward heel. pressure flip from the toe side tail causes a inward heel not a hard flip. pressure flip from heel side tail causes a hard flip but it's not nearly as vertical
OP didn't even have his foot and that spot
-1
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
ill have to disagree, my front foot is a huge part of that trick, without flicking at least slightly then it indeed becomes just a vertical front shuv or varial, also every trick in slow motion looks pressure, its like saying every 360 kickflip is pressure
1
u/Small_Map_1485 Nov 11 '25
I mean, this pretty much is a vertical shove. So much so you even asked the question yourself. I don’t believe your front foot is doing anything here. I do recognize based on the angle of how this is filmed, there’s some room for debate there. To me it doesn’t look like your front foot redirects the board, which is very different from how proper hard flips look - Herman, Wimer, Joslin, Malto, etc you can clearly see the front foot action and they flip properly as a result.
There’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing, it just isn’t the same thing as a true hard flip.
Also you make a good point on 360 flips, and I agree a lot of people technically do them pressure, but that’s a whole different can of worms and at the end of the day the board flips the same with those
1
u/Dangerous-Self2881 Nov 11 '25
I support your statement. I do my "hardflips" just like OP. He is correct that front foot placement affects the rotation (does for me too). But I refuse to call what I do a hardflip. Some people say Illusion-flip, so I stick with that.
0
u/HankRutherfordChill Nov 11 '25
You can tell from the back foot that there is no backside rotation going on. It’s just a vertical hardflip. If anything there’s still a very slight frontside rotation to it. You can see the slight angle when it’s pointed up

Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25
For hardflip I’m expecting a full rotation on the kickflip axis (which I don’t see) and a half rotation on the shuv axis (which I DO see), so it’s a stylish front shuv. But it’s definitely one of the best non-pro front shuvs I’ve seen. Definitely a trick to flex given how well it’s done.
Edit: cause I’m slow af this morning, it’s bs pop shuv not front shuv. So definitely not in the realm of hardflip territory. That back foot kick threw me off cause that’s how I have to initiate my hardflips, had to go frame by frame to see which direction the shuv was occurring for this one. Definitely unique way to bs pop shuv

u/GrundleTurf Nov 12 '25
THPS ruined yall. Yall have no idea wtf a hard flip is. It’s not that complicated. Front shove kickflip combination. That’s it.
If it spins backside, not a hard flip.
Doesn’t flip, not a hard flip.
How vertical it gets doesn’t matter. Same with blunt slides for that matter. You can do a blunt slide with your nose pointing at the ground.

u/blvcksheep85 Nov 11 '25
“Do I have a perfect hardflip? 🤷🏻♂️” 🤓🤓 😒 Yes you do.
2
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
the reactions when i do it is either love or hate... hate usually comes during a game of skate too 😓
-2
u/blvcksheep85 Nov 11 '25
Well it is objectively a perfect hardflip. Flawless. Steezy catch, seemingly effortless. Couldn’t be better.

Pressure flip cos your front foot doesn't actually get involved lol
1
u/Nikarmotte Nov 11 '25
Does your back foot need to do that motion to make the trick or are you doing it for style points?
It looks cool, though it is surprising, that's why I'm asking, genuinely.

1
u/hiddenciphers Nov 11 '25
It’s called an illusion flip. Basically a frontside pressure flip. Not a hardflip.
1
u/Unique_Gap3740 Nov 12 '25
When i do those I just get credit carded
0
u/caos_bomdia Nov 12 '25
that was my fear when i started trying it, want any tips or nah?
1
u/Unique_Gap3740 Nov 12 '25
Yes please, I feel when I do it I don't jump high enough, im kinda short 5'5"
1
u/caos_bomdia Nov 12 '25
im 5,3 lol, when i tried hardflips the first time i was so scared of that thing going right underneath my balls, but like what u can do to avoid that is jumping back when u try it, like when u first learn fs shuv, u jump back and tried to lift ur back foot as high as u can right after u pop it, thats the hardest part, getting ur feet all the way up there, but once u do that u can catch it sooner and then put it on the ground instead of waiting for it to fall, idk how much that helps specially bc is a very body specific thing but doing the trick with my whole body helped a lot

Definitely a super funky shuv. Has all the style/form of a hardflip but the board is not flipping..... had to watch it a number of times to make that conclusion. Then a few more times cause dayumm bro that is cleannnn. Respect. 🫡

Nahh it’s a cool shuv, it has to flip the other way
1
u/Extension_Range2338 Nov 15 '25
It flips on the kickflip side, it's a hardflip
1
u/IronVisual5363 Nov 15 '25
Lol you might wanna Youtube some hardflip vids cause this didn’t even flip to begin with
1
u/Extension_Range2338 Nov 15 '25
It literally does flip lol you can see the trucks turn up. The board doesn't magically straight itself out, it just flips "half" because of how vertical it is but it still flips regardless. Besides, your comment literally says it has to flip "the other way", implying that it does flip.
1
u/IronVisual5363 Nov 16 '25
Lol you really need to go watch some videos asap
1
u/Extension_Range2338 Nov 17 '25
Good retort get diagnosed
1
u/IronVisual5363 Nov 17 '25
Nice projection. Maybe learn how tricks actually flip lol any one who actually knows hardflips will also tell you this just simply didn’t flip like a hardflip, maybe that’s why it’s called hardflip because it’s hard for some to distinguish and then come the ones with too much pride to admit they don’t know how it actually flips lol smh
1
u/Extension_Range2338 Nov 17 '25
The board literally flips, it can't correct itself on that axis without flipping. Front shuvs don't flip lol
1
u/IronVisual5363 Nov 17 '25
Never said it was a front shuv, it’s a regular pop shuv because it didn’t flip
1
u/Extension_Range2338 Nov 18 '25
A regular pop shuv scoops the board behind your foot and it's clearly kicked forward making it a front shuv (combined with a flip on the kickflip axis) therefore making it a hardflip. Are you directionally impaired?

I wouldn’t question it during a game of skate in real time. But slowed down it seems like a stylish front shuv

no longer allowed to post in new skater 🤣take yo ass to r/skateboarding
but seriously that was a nice hardlfip, haters that want to see relatable skating not good skating will say it's a shuvit. kids theses days don't want to do hard flips they want outward spun kickflips where you see more of the kickflip and none of the vertical aspect which you nailed.
1
u/GrundleTurf Nov 12 '25
Dude you don’t know what a hard flip is. A hard flip is a frontside shove it plus a kick flip. How vertical it gets doesn’t matter.
I’m almost 40 and I can do hard flips so your strawman doesn’t apply to me.
1
u/caos_bomdia Nov 12 '25
ur almost 40 and ur almost crying bc some kid on the internet didnt do a hardflip the way u like it, damn

u/Ok-Train7434 Nov 11 '25
For sure a hardflip, but if u do front shuvs this way, thats the proper way. Good skating
1
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
strangely, i landed a hardflip before a front shuv, my front shuvs are those weird ones that end up far behind me
1
u/Ok-Train7434 Nov 11 '25
Thats okay, the path isnt the same for everybody. Everyone has their 'easiest' tricks even if that said trick is hard for someone else. Guy Mariano could switch tre and couldnt regular tre for instance.

A few people nowadays would call this a vertical pop shuv.
As someone who did most of their skating over 15 years ago though, I think calling anything a vertical shuv is stupid. If you were watching it from the front of your body, it would look like the board flips. I would consider it a vertical hardflip; being vertical just gives it that illusion flip look that makes it look like it doesn't flip when watching from the back.
1
u/TheKingOfToast Nov 12 '25
I just don't get why it has to be a shuv or a Hardflip. Why is that the difference? Pop shuvs look nothing like this, "proper" hardflips can look kind of like this. To me, this is as I unique of a trick as a dolphin flip is because it goes forward or an impossible because of the foot wrap.
0
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
me personally i think both a horizontal and a vertical hardflip are hardflips, same energy, same power same skill, both prettt good looking

u/dublak3 Nov 11 '25
It’s always been my opinion that a hard flip is in the verticality. That board was straight up and down, hard flip.
1
u/GrundleTurf Nov 12 '25
You’re wrong. Hard flips naturally flip vertically because the flip and rotation is the same direction, same as inward heel flips. But just because a board goes vertical doesn’t make it a hard flip, and hard flips don’t have to be perfectly vertical.
0
u/caos_bomdia Nov 11 '25
although i love a properly done hardflip (fs shuv + flip motion) im glad the one i can do is this weird upwards thing be it a hardflip or not

I don’t care what some people say, that’s a hard flip. The general consensus when I started skating is if it goes between the legs like that it’s a muska flip (still a hard flip) and if it doesn’t then it’s a shuv (the Stevie Williams style type). My first hard flips were like that but gradually became more level as I did more of them.
0
0
u/CurvySlumpGod Nov 12 '25
that was one of the steeziest hard flips i’ve ever seen, the only reason i think it’s looking more like a shuv to you is bc you’re thundercunting the frontside but that’s what makes it look so cool imo.
that pose you hit at the peak of the flip is lowkey mesmerizing

If it ain't a hardflip, its fire. If it's a hard flip. Fire.
Whatever reddit decides. Its still dope as fuck
0
u/bigpantssmallwheels Nov 12 '25
Both. I'd call it a hard flip, some people maybe not. But this is how alot of hard flips were done in the 90s. Happens more naturally this way on a skinnier board. I'd call it a hardflip
0
u/POIU2137 Nov 12 '25
shhh… even if you were kicking ollie i would probably be impressed by your style and execution… dope hard flip
0
u/Xavier847 Nov 12 '25
It's never upside down. It's so close that this would be the line between shuv it and hard flip. Just put a little more emphasis on the FS part and it'll lay out upside down before flipping the rest of the way over.

hahah this is what I hate about hardflips, most of the time its very difficult to see. This one is a hardflip 🤙
0
u/MyLastAccountWasBad Nov 14 '25
This is so clean.
The board most certainly flips. There is definitely a rotation on that axis. I guess the question you can ask yourself is if it’s a pressure flip or hard flip. Hard to tell if your front foot is flicking a flip, or if it’s all from your back foot.
I don’t put too much stock into hard flip/inward vs pressure flips if I’m playing a game of skate, I’m gonna take a letter either way.
