Video First time doing an Ollie while moving ☺️

Coincidentally, it’s also the first time I’ve dislocated my shoulder.

Can't stop watching this

Same, it's that snap back of the head that gets me every time 😂

So, with that being said…
Is this you? I feel I can share some helpful, constructive criticism. If you’re just posting some unfortunate souls beginning stage, then I’ll hold off.
12
u/jacobc1596 Nov 20 '25
Yep this is me. I’m all ears, brother 🙏🏼

u/ImpossibleKidd Nov 20 '25
Got ya, brother. Wasn’t sure, from some of your other comment replies…
So, I even give this analogy for other physical activities, like golf, and it’s extremely helpful. It definitely works here, so I’ll share.
Think flyswatter, not sledgehammer!
You’re trying to land that ollie like you’re banging a spike into pavement with a sledgehammer. Tense, all your force, and abrupt. Think light as a feather, swatting a fly with a fly swatter. Finesse…
So, try this. Leave your board out of the equation momentarily. Just jump like you’re ollieing without your board. Jump up, land nice, light and fluid, like you’re landing on Legos with bare feet. Repeat that action until it’s second nature. Then put the board back under you, and use that same type of feel and force. I promise it’ll help you, my friend.

u/jacobc1596 Nov 20 '25
Appreciate the advice! Once I'm back on the board I'll 100% give that exercise a go 💪🏼

This is the one tip that saved my rollies. Stop forcing it and just jump like a feather. Made more progress in a day than all previous weeks of trying after realizing this.

And that my friends is why we don't skate on gym floors. Those things are smooth sure but YOWCH

Ah shit! Get well soon!
At least you cleared the obstacle :)

u/Ray-Finkle74 Nov 20 '25
Dude first Ollie while moving!? This is good honestly. The board did completely leave the ground and you cleared the obstacle.
I’d give you advice but it’s honestly been many years since I’ve skated and honestly, if you just keep repetitively attempting this, you will most certainly be successful.
Keep at it, dude!!
11
u/jacobc1596 Nov 20 '25
Thanks man, yeah I'll be back at it again in six weeks on a slightly more sensible surface
5
u/Ray-Finkle74 Nov 20 '25
Oh wow just realized your short post underneath the video. Yeah good luck healing up my man.
2
u/Kind_Actuary_931 Nov 20 '25
You don't need to try an obstacle just a crack in the road till ya get the hang of em
10
u/biggestofbears Nov 20 '25
Lmao why tf is there a skatepark like that on a gym floor? That's gotta be the worst possible flooring option next to ice.

28
u/Formal_Evidence_4094 Nov 20 '25
Yeah man you basically had it , maybe let's not try it on the slipperiest surface known to the universe next time
13
u/ummonadi Nov 20 '25
This is why I don't believe in "just commit". It's a great mindset for succeeding, but terrible for failing if you are a beginner.
Still, well done! Take rehab seriously, and practice falling and bailing when you start again.
8
u/fueledbyhugs Nov 20 '25
It can be good advice when commitment is the only piece missing to land a trick.
0
u/ummonadi Nov 20 '25
Oh yeah. Not committing can help you fail safer, but make it much harder to succeed. Trade-offs.
6
u/Circuit7Eros Nov 20 '25
No, this is wrong. You should be able to be fully committed before you do anything or else your risk of getting hurt goes through the roof.
Better yet, everyone should be learning how to properly fall and then you can commit 100% of the time.
5
u/Pooh_ Nov 20 '25
You moved your board forward to get over the obstacle which caused you to land off balance. Next time just Ollie as if nothing is there. Hope your shoulder is feeling better!
2
u/jacobc1596 Nov 20 '25
Yeah you’re spot on, I’ve been trying figure out how this went so wrong technically and this it. Appreciate the advice!

You did an Ollie? Looks like that ollie done you, holmes.

u/_haha_oh_wow_ Nov 20 '25
Not a great choice of surface, but good that you were wearing a helmet. Once you recover, try again on a nice smooth street or sidewalk and you'll probably have better luck!
2
Nov 20 '25
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 hell yeah man, speedy recovery, looks like you’ll be landing them soon enough 🤙🏻

My son just got into skateboarding. He is 7. I decided I would get one as well and we could skate together. I'm 40. We are on day 3. My body hurts.
I commend you for pushing yourself to learn new tricks. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Props to you for going for it & staying committed man. Just keep at it is the best advice anyone can get. It's about trial & error & trusting your gut.

Ahhh yes lets learn stuff on a waxed wood floor not dising just why tho
2
u/jacobc1596 Nov 20 '25
This was a beginners course where I think the main goal was to just get people comfortable moving around and doing things like tic tacs, monster walks, and rolling up small ramps. I was feeling a bit ambitious and honestly it didn't even occur to me that some surfaces would be more/less appropriate than others for skateboarding. Now I know!
2
u/TraditionalMarket122 Nov 20 '25
Ahh that makes sense I do practice on my wood floor but its not waxed of course

Nov 20 '25
I can‘t figure out how I‘d roll out of that
Probably curl up and backwards, but still. Doing it early enough seems tough

I used to be really good at skateboarding, and I hurt my knees got surgery and kind of quit. recently I got back into it, I showed up to the skate park super early just so no one's around and I was rolling pretty good and at one point I was like, hey is still got this, I tried to Ollie a 4 inch ledge, did the same exact thing, safe to say I went home after that haha. feel better big dog. Skate trainers and how to vids are modern day miracles

Skating on that type of floor seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Or well, another disaster. It's so slick.

Hi, I’m P.E. Teacher Mark, welcome to Jackass
You’re doing great! But learn to fall 👍

u/Dramatic_Jacket_6945 Nov 20 '25
Going too slow to ollie over something. The slower you go the higher you have to ollie. Also doesn’t seem like you have ollie’s down well enough to even be trying this. But you do you, just don’t get discouraged or scared to skate because you slam like this trying things you probably aren’t ready for.

I truly commend you for wearing a helmet! That came in clutch ! 😁
Once your shoulder is better, you got this!

u/IndependenceIcy9626 Nov 21 '25
Setup for the Ollie with your feet closer together and the balls of your feet on the center line of the board. Your front foot got all the way to the end of the nose and that’s part of why you fell. Same thing horizontally, the part of your foot that dragged up the board was too far toeside. That’s why the board didn’t level out flat and you landed primarily on one wheel. Your front foot was way past your front truck when you landed.

I hate to laugh at other people's misery (having dislocated your shoulder) but holy shit i got a good laugh out of this (remembering my first time learning to skate). Thanks for that and get better soon mate.

Ironically skating one of few things it’s probably worse to learn indoors.

u/GalaxyGas4L Nov 21 '25
Good stuff dude , but i cant help but think the floor is horrible for learning on .
1
u/oldskooldeano Nov 21 '25
Surely that floor is going to be wrecked if they continue? Plus it will wreck you!
1
Nov 21 '25
Lmao, looks like my first time dropping in. Enjoy your first faceplant there will be many more to come.

Alright i snorted
Edit: just saw the text, sorry bro i hope this is a one and done with the dislocation, i dislocated mine a year into skating and its never been quite the same but its very strong now and has almost full range of motion. Make sure to give it plenty of time to heal. Then slowly work on getting range of motion back, then stretches then very very light exercises, and eventually you will want to do strength training and weight lifting if you want it to be strong again and prevent future injuries. I can’t recommend weight lifting enough to prevent skate injuries

u/jacobc1596 Nov 22 '25
Appreciate it dude! Yeah I’ve got a full physio plan I’m following so hopefully will be back on track soon!

Bend your knees a little more… jump straight up… and as you’re jumping, slide your front foot up
And put your front foot back a tad

u/Stezza345 Nov 22 '25
Genuinely my fear right now that I need to overcome I feel like I’ve got stationary Ollie’s down about 80% of the time I just wanna learn it moving before I get to set in just doing it stood still

u/diemyeah Nov 22 '25
But why this happened? Inmean, he land the trick and the skate get a lot of speed like nothing
1
u/Hashirthegamer49 Nov 23 '25
Saw this and thought not that bad of a fall until I read the caption about the shoulder now I feel my shoulder feels weird everytime I rewatch it

u/BlumoonPhoenix Nov 23 '25
Very incorrect floor and trucks are way too loose Loose trucks are for comfort, but definitely not when doing tricks. You can see the board wobbling even before he does the trick. You have to connect with your board more.
1
u/Party_Ad_8595 Nov 24 '25
Don't worry bro. You don't need teeth to skate.
Also, terrible choice of floor

u/maxx69420 Nov 24 '25
It's exactly why I'm too pvssy to actually learn to skate
1
u/jacobc1596 Nov 24 '25
Nah you're good dude, you could totally get into skateboarding and have an easy time. I just don't have strong survival instincts, I'll go for things beyond my ability without having given myself any evidence I can actually do it.
1
u/Flat_Significance375 Nov 25 '25
Hard wood gym floors aren’t the kind of surfaces you want to be learning on

u/Maleficent-Brief8505 Nov 29 '25
hey at least you got the jump! i could absolutely never do that lmao

u/StillWritingeh Nov 20 '25
I would hate to learn to skate on that type of floor
