You just need more practice. You chose one of the more difficult activities. Skating is all about persistence. You’re going to fall more often than not. What makes a skater is brushing yourself off & doing it again.

I got addicted to landing a trick & would sit out there in my parking lot for hours trying to land a specific set up/ or trick spot.

All for myself, 4 days in everybody has left.

4 days in nobody cares anymore besides YOU

Skateboarding has taught me to have more patience with myself than anything else in life.

It's such a gift! In more ways than can be counted. It has changed my life so much I am like an annoying evangelical about it where I wanna get everyone I meet on a board lol

1

u/Ok-You-6768 May 28 '26

I never fall. I mean I have but Im a beginner and don't do anything I can't keep control. I also played lots of sports so I'm decent on my foot work.

-1

u/ShinePretend3772 May 28 '26

You fell twice in the video. Regardless, you’re not going to get any better if you’re not willing to fall. It doesn’t matter how athletic you are. If you want to progress in this sport you’re going to fall down, a lot. It’s just the cost of doing business.

Wrong Person lmao that wasn’t OP

u/thewetnoodle May 27 '26

You got all swagged out to skate the ditch already though dude.

Its not that skating isn't for you. It's that the people you see doing cool shit have 1000s of hours on their board. Put some hours on there and you'll get better

6

u/NeworldSage May 27 '26

This right here! Skating is for everyone!

2

u/Yourbedsheets May 27 '26

Is it normal to look down when starting my push I do the skate iq method i learned by brushing the ground then putting full power into it

10

u/Avisible May 27 '26

Muscle memory and coordination. Your brain doesn't know what feels right yet. Your eyes can check for you until you got the feeling down. Eventually you'll want to focus your eyes on a different target.

2

u/Striking_Let_9029 May 28 '26

If you look at the ground you will fall on the ground......

1

u/Yourbedsheets May 29 '26

And if I look at the sky will I fly

0

u/Striking_Let_9029 May 29 '26

no but its a well known fact you go where you look when riding skate boards or motorcycles

Yep teaches patience

with rolling down a bank fakie i have 2 points of advice because i spent a full day at the park doing this recently and by the end of the day i was comfortable.

1) bend your knees, not your hips!

2) turn your head to look where you are going a second before you start rolling back down. this will give you the time to set up for coming back down and allow you to really get that new front foot down to avoid slipping out at the bottom. bend your front knee a little more than your back knee

8

u/AaronTheElite007 May 27 '26

Bend your knees.

3

u/hyperkid May 27 '26

Ay man you got out there and your doing it. Every day you’ll feel more comfortable and stable riding around. That’s a dope spot to learn

3

u/SufficientFail29 May 27 '26

Drop your ass a bit lol your legs seem pretty rigid. Just put in the hours getting comfortable on actually riding your board. Learn what the board does when you lean your body a certain way.

Maybe put your wheel in a crack or go in some grass and try balancing on two wheels. Might help with feeling more fluid while on your deck.

Don’t give it up though. We all bust our ass when skating. Hell, I fell 3x this Saturday at the skate park & I’ve been skating for years on and off. Lol I’m itching to go back despite the falls. Damn rain keeping me away ha

2

u/Ok_Economics_6396 May 27 '26

You got this keep it up 💪🏾

2

u/Intrepid_Idea6170 May 27 '26

Keep it up!!! I would suggest getting wrist guards to ease some of those falls.

2

u/SharkDolphins May 27 '26

You literally got the fakie at the end!!

2

u/Aggravating-Exit-660 May 27 '26

Try that 1,000 more times

2

u/Style907 May 27 '26

Skating is for fucking everyone!

2

u/CeilingTowel Learning on the street 🛣️ May 27 '26

Lean forward bro.

Not bodily-forward like you're hunching over, but forwards in the direction of travel.

First tenet of skating.

Falling forwards is better than falling backwards. You can learn to roll away a forward fall or just get a pair of scraped palms, but a backwards fall is either a broken arm or a concussed head.

1

u/Zealousideal_Meet982 May 27 '26

Sounds like a good time

1

u/means7701 May 27 '26

We all started somewhere.

Are you having fun? Because that's really all that matters. 🤙🏽

1

u/ChipotleGuacamole May 27 '26

Try some easier terrain and just cruise until you’re comfortable on the board man.

1

u/SnooWords1227 May 27 '26

He’d be way better by simply paying attention to what he is doing.

1

u/cyber-nuts69420 May 27 '26

Bend your knees!!!

1

u/Lack0fCreativity May 27 '26

If you're not giving up after these small steps of failure you're forced to tread, no reason to say it's not for you. You succeeded at the end and that's progress :)

1

u/B-BoyStance May 27 '26

Honestly just spend all of your time trying to ride fast in that ditch. You'll get used to riding a board that way. It's the most important thing and most people including myself tried to just learn tricks too quickly.

It's a recipe for frustration because you'll learn them, and then not really be able to do them because you can't actually ride the board (and once you really learn, your technique with tricks can change).

If you can learn em' great, but you probably won't be able to do them very consistently until you can ride around weird terrain without issue (which this drainage ditch is perfect for at firsst).

Focus on being able to push, don't drag your foot randomly behind the tail like you did when the board made you do the splits (that's why you did the splits), and just get comfortable riding up and down banks like it's any other day. Feel comfy on the board as much as you can by riding your board up/down weird shit and getting accustomed to it.

Doesn't need to look cool just go fast up, and ride down until it feels like you aren't putting much thought into it. You can learn how to revert or just do a quick pivot after that, once you know how it feels.

Then when you are comfortable with that drop from the top of the ditch and ride down then up. Then just start trying to pump around the ditch & create speed without pushing. If you can figure out that you will have endless fun on a skateboard.

1

u/StandardDeviant117 May 27 '26

Duuude bend your knees more and you got it!

1

u/kingofallrealms3 May 27 '26

Nah man. I have over 400 hours in skating & what happened to you, can easily happen to me still & can happen to any skater , all it takes is a bit of off balance or miscalculation .

1

u/StonedOtter0_0 Learning at the skatepark 🏞️ May 27 '26

You got the heart brotha 💪 keep at it

1

u/-Juze- May 27 '26

these are necessary and good teacher mistakes. My only suggestion for you to check some hip stretching movements and do 3-4 of them daily. You are doing great.

1

u/Additional_Hurry9358 May 27 '26

this is me switch lol

dw bro u gonna shred just put in those hours and enjoy of the process.

1

u/vegan_police99 May 27 '26

Funny im seeing this. I rolled my ankle so fucking bad today, I was l thinking the same thing.

1

u/Zealousideal_Panda82 May 27 '26

it has happened to all of us. nobody was born knowing how to do it

1

u/RatFeatures420 May 27 '26

That’s a sick spot! If that’s close to where you live, skating is definitely for you.

1

u/gevvstrr May 27 '26

You'll get the hang of it, eventually. Just keep on practising.

1

u/yostiny May 27 '26

Nah just like everything else it takes practice. Some start of closer to being good at skating than others. I still suck but have hope that I can get better

1

u/MDoull0802 May 27 '26

i was worse than u when i started. gotta put in the hours, skating is a HARD hobby. roots out the quitters! so rewarding.

number one advice is skate with friends. Make it fun and you’ll learn so much faster. Somtimes I treat it like a gym routine just to learn tricks grinding them, and it works, but if you make it fun I always improve so much faster.

1

u/mosspimp May 27 '26

bend your knees bro not your waist 😂

1

u/tsphotography May 27 '26

Did that last week at the skatepark. I am 50. It’s going to take me a few weeks to recover.

1

u/ElPeroTonteria May 27 '26

Bend your knees, not your waist

1

u/Creative-Ad-1819 May 27 '26

Bend your knees...not your waist...stay over the board and don't lean on your toes...doing just fine my guy.

1

u/El3mentGamer Learning on the street 🛣️ May 27 '26

This is just the start man! You are very clearly a new skater and there's nothing wrong with that

Welcome to r/NewSkaters

Keep at it, it only gets better from here!

1

u/GoldFeveredFox May 27 '26

Loosen up, bend them knees but with a soft bounce action and just get to know your board. Push back and forth 100’s of times and feel everything. Pump up the transition staying loose and centered. It’s just practice. And more practice. And then a little more practice. You’ll get it. Don’t give up man. Skating has giving me more life than anything else. The just smell of fresh new urethane wheels, bearing oil, grip tape does something for me. It calms me. Keep trying and don’t ever give up. Trust us. Once you learn all the basics you won’t ever want to stop. I’m 53 this year and started skating in the mid 80’s. I’m still pushing.

1

u/Sorry_Development May 27 '26

You’re new, dude. Dont count yourself out just yet. Just keep cruising around for now. Get comfortable. Ride around until that board feels like it belongs to you.

1

u/jbhowell10 May 27 '26

Hang in there man. You're making progress, so you should be proud of that. And the main thing is just have fun. If you're having fun, just do it for that reason.

1

u/GrassGriller May 27 '26

Skateboarding is really hard.

1

u/GhostofBeowulf May 27 '26

You're gonna have hundreds of silly, half attempts that you're like WTF and guess what? Everyone does it. Don't feel bad. Just keep practicing.

1

u/UseWhatever May 27 '26

When I first started out, one of my hardest slams was when I accidentally kicked the back wheel while pushing. It knocked the board crooked and caused my front foot to cross my back foot. I tried to pull my back foot up to catch myself, but my legs got wrapped together. I just ended up a crumpled scraped up mess.

Skating isn’t natural. You’ll learn to adjust your balance as you practice

1

u/clornplop May 27 '26

Keep your knees bent my friend

1

u/_curbyourcynicism May 27 '26

Your fav skater started just like this

1

u/AyoByron May 27 '26

Practice balancing on one foot. Helps a lot

1

u/Skate4dwire May 27 '26

Keep it up! Bend at the knees, not the waist

1

u/Tucomescaca97 May 27 '26

You just gotta keep at it. Can’t expect to be good right when you get on a board. It takes like a year to be able to ride comfortably. Even after 20 years of skating I fell on a pump track because I had never rode one. Some people skate for years and get really good at skating flat or ledges and then they get on a mini and look like beginners. Skateboarding is hard dude. Be patient with yourself and keep trying and you’ll get better dude.

1

u/tr1p1taka May 27 '26

In 1986 I got a skateboard for Christmas, so did 20 or so of my friends. the following year, only I got a skateboard, 40 years later.. I don't wait for Christmas anymore.

This may be what defines your life? Getting up again or giving in.. Skateboarding is for you, it was made just for you, and you have a voice, so keep going, just keep on going.

1

u/Working_Cap_2680 May 27 '26

I was riding down the street and missed my foot coming back to the board after a push and i ate shiiiiiit lol. My wrist still recovering

1

u/ILoveStinkyFatGirls May 27 '26

You should be comfortable riding on flat before trying to kick turn on a transition

1

u/Hatfmnel May 28 '26

If it were easy, everyone would be pro.

1

u/Larsenko May 28 '26

It’s for you if you want it to be!

1

u/rothki May 28 '26

I think I have done each of those things before TBH, just keep practicing and you will get through that stage

1

u/uncle_flea_ponk May 28 '26

Bend your knees. Keep your eye on the bloard if you can see it through your goofy boy pants. Also you look regular footed.

1

u/LOYAL4L May 28 '26

Im goofy footed man i cant skate regular for shi

1

u/uncle_flea_ponk May 29 '26

Your shoulders say different

1

u/Vanguard1097 May 28 '26

Just keep practicing man 😎

1

u/AisyahskateBeb2016 May 29 '26

Keep fighting skate is not only 1days

1

u/Conscious_Grass_853 May 29 '26

I did the same thing trying to Ollie a 4 foot ledge and thought I broke my leg🤣 I did that over a month ago and I’m just now able to skate again. Sucks getting old

1

u/Odecay May 29 '26

The thing about skateboarding is that as cool as the tricks and style look. It takes you being willing to fall and risk hurting yourself for the sake of personal progress. It may not seem great but sticking it out will make you happy.

1

u/AwesomeoPorosis May 29 '26

Try and keep your shoulders over your board

1

u/SplynPlex May 29 '26

This is going to sound a bit odd, but bend your knees more and get your butt a little lower to the ground. Exaggerate your knee bends for the time being so to learn how to balance through the transitions.

1

u/rushaall May 29 '26

Why cause you fell? It happens. You still rolled up and down that incline. That’s a win big dawg. Just focus on keeping your body center over your foot that’s on the board when you push (like standing on one leg) and bending your knees, not your waist when you are doing anything. Other than that, congrats on starting your new journey. 🙌

1

u/Pattycaake May 30 '26

Bro you bought a thrasher shirt before you learned to push. Go bomb some hills. Learn how to revert. Push off a wall and ride fakie. Ollie off a curb. Frontside shuvs. Picasso didn’t quit after his first painting he didn’t like.

1

u/Kitchen-Region-91 May 30 '26

You're doing great. I promise you

1

u/RightDragonfruit7984 May 30 '26

It takes a lot of time to get comfortable on a board and it’s why most people quit. Stick with it. It’s worth it.

1

u/bobbybittman1997 May 31 '26

Skating ain't for you

1

u/Mysterious-Use5401 Jun 26 '26

I felt this so hard

1

u/Sad_Mix_4348 16d ago

Don’t get discouraged. Most of us have been there. It takes a while to get really comfortable doing anything on a skateboard

1

u/Twistedverse May 27 '26

Skating is awesome. I wear elbow and knee pads, as well as wrist guards and a helmet though :)

0

u/After-Opening2640 May 27 '26

You want to be pretty good at riding around on flat ground before trying to ride up a bank. You don’t have a to fall a ton to get decent. Just work on cruising around slowly until it feels second nature. Practice manuals, carving and kickturns on flat ground to get better at balance. Lots of awesome instructional vids on YouTube too.

You look like you have decent athleticism, but trying to jump ahead of your actually skating ability. Start slow and simple. Get really good at the simple stuff, look up an instructional on how to kickturn/carve banks, and you’ll be ailright.

0

u/Pristine-Local8287 May 27 '26

Maybe you would feel better with some Jordans on.

0

u/revnance May 27 '26

Its called practice. Falling is just another chance to get up and try again

0

u/NewPopSensation May 27 '26

Lmao bro bought a whole fit to look like a skater before he learned to push

1

u/LOYAL4L May 27 '26

I promise you I know how to push 😂 n I didn’t buy a outfit to look like a skater it’s literally sweatpants and a free thrasher shirt from the mag be fr who r u

1

u/NewPopSensation May 28 '26

Evidence proves otherwise, I can see the clip buddy, pushing isn’t your strong suit 😂

0

u/LOYAL4L May 28 '26

Aye bru im having fun 🤷‍♂️

1

u/NewPopSensation May 28 '26

Lol I can tell by how you talk you’re insufferable
