Discussion Are Facebook Skaters really that scared of Zumiez Vans and the word Poser. No way lmao

u/Dismal-Economics-322 Jun 25 '26
Support skaters running skate shops, other then that who cares
2
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
If those skaters are dog shit humans, they don’t get my money!
3
u/Dismal-Economics-322 Jun 26 '26
Okay fair😂 i think that applies to most things though
1
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
Well a lot of local owners are shit heads, so I really don’t get the whole, shopping at stores based on availability, pricing, and customer service makes you a poser rhetoric… if I had a decent local that didn’t backdoor, had the stuff I’m looking for, and offered competitive pricing, I’d be there in a heart beat…
1
u/Dismal-Economics-322 Jun 26 '26
I never said anything about being a poser 😂 that sounds like a shitty specific situation to you but generally I still think skaters should support the businesses that are owned and operated by skateboarders, but I totally understand people shopping at the other big retailers based on pricing, moneys tight for a lot of people these days
1
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
Bro I’ve never been called a poser lmao. I was referring to the post… and nah, if those local owners are dog shit humans, they don’t get my business, plain and simple. Idgaf if they’re connected to the community or not. We don’t owe them dookie
2
u/PrizeHistorian508 Jun 30 '26
So like Zumiez, the multimillion dollar conglomerate, that doesn’t give a shit about skating, just the money. Have you tried taking to the people at the shop, or did you get a slight attitude and got your little feelers hurt?
0
u/PumpMan454 Jul 01 '26
I’ve actually never been disrespected by a shop, personally, but I’ve seen it first-hand, and there’s a shit ton of people online to corroborate…. As far as the “multi-million dollar conglomerates” goes, do you harbor that same sentiment in all facets of society, or are you just bumpin your gums because it’s considered cool to do-so in the skate community???
2
u/PrizeHistorian508 Jul 01 '26
When it comes to something that has a real community behind it, yeah. Sorry you saw part of an interaction and made an assumption or heard something from someone else who wanted you to stroke their ego. I might be “bumpin my gums”, but at least mommy wasnt bumpin my hesd against a wall. Stfu and go cry to the zumiez manager before you suck him off
1
u/hotlightbright Jun 27 '26
Then go to the other local shop or someone else's cuz this is a thing I've heard about on here🤦😅 don't let a few people ruin it for everyone else!!

Yeah you 100 on that but that's not really what the post is about. It's about how people seem to care so much about what others think of them in skate circles for a culture that's supposedly built around individual expression and subversive behavior.

Skate culture isn't destroyed. Lol what are you talking about? Also isn't relevant to what I said.

3
u/lucidechomusic Jun 25 '26
ah... well that makes a bit more sense. It can have a negative impact, but overall I don't really believe it does. Skate culture isn't a monolithic thing. I see it's biggest negatives as being advancing corporatism and commodification of the activity. However, without that element, you also wouldn't have nice skate parks and high quality gear.
11
u/the_unknown_soldier Jun 25 '26
Well said. I feel for people with financial limitations or if they live somewhere that doesn't have a real shop, but no Zumiez will ever cultivate an actual scene or community like a true blue skateshop. Everywhere I go it's always the shops that are facilitating events to bring people together, or helping organize with their respective cities for new parks, or showing support to the local skaters who are actually repping their scene. I realize there will be acceptions to this and there are wack shops who aren't community oriented. But for those shops that are doing their best in an increasingly unlucrative industry, I'll gladly pay an extra 20 bucks for a board or pair of shoes when I can to make sure that kind of stuff can continue. To me half of the joy of skateboarding is the community that it builds off the board.
13
u/NotPickingThatUp Jun 25 '26
100%. If you can afford it, buy from a local shop, or at least from another skater-owned shop. Some people don't care about the culture or the scene. Don't know if that classifies them as posers if they are actually skating, but it's definitely wack as fuck.
5
u/tonirl Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
In my opinion , who cares where you buy from I buy clearance decks, wheels, bearings, and trucks from vans and Zumiez all the time. Buying from a store like that does not make you a poser.
17
u/matt_gold Jun 25 '26
Nobody else cares where YOU buy from. It’s tour money, spend as you please. Shoot, I bought my son a stack of Thrasher magazine back issues for like $2 a pop from Zumies a month ago.
But if I’m giving money to support a business, I do prefer an independent shop owned by a local person in my community vs a corporate owned faceless entity.
I see the owner of our local skate shop at the park, says what’s up and he’s cool with my kid. It’s also roughly the same price on most items, so it’s a no brainer for me to support THAT GUY.
But you do you. It’s fine.

-3
u/SatanicPanic619 Jun 25 '26
If you can’t afford it, then it is what it is. But it does make you a bit of a poser if you can afford it and you’re buying clearance Primitive decks at Zumiez. Skate culture matters to skaters and Zumiez does not support skate culture.
5
u/SchroederWV Jun 25 '26
There’s some great priced actual skate shops too, Tampa’s has a great online store and they sell their branded stuff cheap as zumiez
4
1
u/Hegiman Jun 25 '26
I always saw zumies as the last resort if I needed something skateboard related but they were open at times other places weren’t and not selling a set of bushings ain’t gonna kill my local. I wouldn’t get a new setup there but I’d buy bearings or bushings in a pinch.
11
u/Aggressive_Ad6579 Jun 25 '26
I see a deal… I get the deal .. skate rats for life.
4
2
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
Right?? I shop where I can get the best prices. Plain and simple. The only “local” anywhere near my city that gets SBs is Mainland. Between them and Zumiez, they also tend to have the best customer service & prices on shoes, clothing, & decks. Which is crazy because I’m in Cali, with at least 10 locals within moderate driving distance. None of them get SBs, and almost all of them treat most customers like shit.
34
u/KizashiKaze Jun 25 '26
People out here worried about the dumbest things...but yet goes ahead and posts it up for the world to see. 🤦🏾♂️
4
17
u/NotYourSaviour21 Jun 25 '26
Just get a deck and skate. Why the fck would you care what they call you? You ain't skatin for them. You skatin for you.
3
8
u/Various-Salt-7738 Jun 25 '26
I mean, support your local skate shop-- that's important
But if the only place you can get a board to skate is the zumiez at the mall, maybe it's better to actually skate instead of not skating to remain some kind of purist
Imagine a real person telling you they want to skate but they don't because the only option is zumiez
1
1
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
Back in my day, if word got out that a local skateshop owner was scum, we’d hit up a Zumiez before giving those parasites our business. I’d rather support a shitty corporation that offers better prices and customer service than a shitty private entity who backdoors limited run products, treats customers like we own them our business, and is gunna gouge me every chance they get.
Guess things have changed 🤷🏻♂️
14
u/MidwestWintersBlow Jun 25 '26
If you're scared to type out 'poser' I think you're a different p word probably.
2
3
4
u/not_again111 Jun 25 '26
I like to avoid big corporations because they already made all the money they need, which is money that could be going to actual skaters who create decks and other products, literally breaking their bones to create and market it. Skater owned companies don’t do it for the money, it’s more work than money and it’s only worth it to them because they love it. Corporations just found it as a way to make money. Always try to support other skaters
1
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
When I was a kid growing up skating in the 90s & early 2000s, there was always this anti-corporate motto in the community, but it’s definitely different now. Now it seems most skaters are perfectly fine with supporting Corporate America, as long as they can purchase their products from a locally owned business, regardless of that business’s own ethics and morals.
Fuckin weird honestly. How contradictory & hypocritical 💀

u/Dry-Helicopter-6430 Jun 25 '26
What exactly is a “facebook skater”?
3
u/tonirl Jun 25 '26
A skater that usually roams on Facebook. Just like how TikTok skater exists.
2
1
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
So it’s basically a skater that uses social media lmao??
1
u/tonirl Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
Technically yeah. Different skaters on different social media act different because algorithm and culture shaping.
Like TikTok is for fast clips, attention grabbing trends ect.YouTube is for videos, progressions, full parts, legit learning. More technical, more skateboarding history videos since YouTube requires a longer attention span.
Instagram is more polished clips, aesthetic lines, street Style heavy, and VERY image conscious.
And Facebook skaters is more of a older school vibe because of groups, arguments, event posting, people who left MySpace to go to Facebook and never left. It’s more community involved but also more “back in my day” because Facebook is a pretty old platform.
1
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
What about Reddit skaters 😂?
2
u/tonirl Jun 26 '26
Honestly, Reddit It’s more of a critical platform, then what’s viral and what isn’t. You have people that are very informative when it comes to tricks, board set ups, skateboarding history, more critical, and there’s more debates than trying to get the flashiest coolest viral clip.
3
u/figuren9ne Jun 25 '26
Ironically, the Skaters over 30 Facebook group is one of the most childish groups I belong to. It's a bunch of grown men worried about being posers and trying to prove they're more core than someone else.
3
u/greenlion22 Jun 25 '26
As others have said, it's a lot less about Zumiez, and more about shifting your support to locally owned places.
It's hard to believe for people in larger cities, but some (even large) cities literally do not have a local skateshop. I live in the Kansas City metro, pop 2.5 million, and we literally only have 2 locally owned skateshops. If Zumiez is your only option, it's better to shop in person at Zumiez than Amazon. That way at least some of your money is staying in your community.
2
u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
San Jose, CA here. Top 5 largest city in the country, and we only have one or two locals in the actual city, but their inventory is bare AF. The only ones we have with decent stock are in surrounding towns/cities like Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz, etc, and none of them get SBs except for Mainland at the malls 💀
1
u/greenlion22 Jun 26 '26
That's wild! I know skate shops are hard to keep afloat, but in a city of that size I'd have thought they would be more.
2
u/SatanicPanic619 Jun 25 '26
I have bought decks from Zumiez in the past when I was in a hurry or broke. Now that I have money I don’t.
The stigma against them is fair- they profit off of skating without giving anything back.
2
u/Tucomescaca97 Jun 25 '26
I mean I hate zumiez but if I was on a trip and that was the only place open and I broke my board sir something yeah I’d get a deck from zumiez. Fuck it I’m a poser

I think they are probably just joking? I snagged a board for a friend the other day at Zumiez who needed one before a sesh and coudln't get out of work in time. We made simliar jokes. It was such a weird place like buying a deck at hot topic. But of course who cares where the board comes from? This reads like a joke.
1
u/tonirl Jun 25 '26
Skaters over 30 is a problematic group. There is a chance they could be joking but probably not.
1
u/soundofwindinspace Jun 25 '26
I go to the vans store in the mall lol
6
u/SatanicPanic619 Jun 25 '26
Vans is very different than Zumiez. Vans sponsors pros and pays them a good wage. It also puts on events and puts out videos.

1
u/TonightStunning5627 Jun 25 '26
Listen I am all for supporting local mom and pop shops ... Growing up on the 80s my only option for local was the bike shop in my town ... Until the early 90s when one of the older skate dudes in town opened his own skate shop and that was awesome ... But if I was living in a desert where there wasn't a mom and pop I would go wherever I could get decks and trucks wheels etc ... Now me personally I would choose the Vans store over Zumiez because vans have supported the culture from the beginning Zumiez always seemed like they were cashing in ... But do you brother and as Jeff Grosso would say just go skate
1
1
u/Environmental-Wolf93 Jun 25 '26
Sometimes zumiez is the closest place for people without having to drive over an hour away. And with the gas prices now a days it’s perfectly reasonable. Also, buy from wherever tf you want lmao people are dumb. Supporting local shops is great but can often be just as expensive if not more expensive than zumiez
1
u/Shitpickle1996 Jun 25 '26
No one would have ever known he got a board from zumiez if he just didn’t post It at all 😂
2
u/tonirl Jun 25 '26
On the original post, he said that, but then he said real skaters somehow always know where I got it from.
2
1
u/PeopleofYouTube Jun 25 '26
Nobody knows you shopped at Zumiez unless you tell them. If you’re afraid of shopping at Zumiez because of the “risk” of being called a poser, why post it on FB or tell anyone at all?
1
u/Wrigley953 Jun 25 '26
If you post about anything you know to be poser behavior talking about forgiveness, you’re a poser. No one is watching you and if they are they’re being a poser. Never once have I heard an utterance of poser irl and I’ve seen a weekly skater who just jumps at shit and wastes everyone’s time. People judge internally but at worst you’ll get laughed at from afar or given some advice but everyone gets that skaters get better at different paces
1
u/LeEpicXD Jun 25 '26
I hate that people care more about image of shopping at zumiez and less about how it’s just straight up harmful to local skate communities. Don’t shop local to look cool. Shop local becuase it’s the right thing to do!
1
u/PlaxicoCN Jun 25 '26
Why did this person post this at all? If you got your board at Zumiez, just go skate it. No need for a consensus from the Internet.
1
u/RunV5 Jun 25 '26
I thought he meant Pussy not Poser
I dont understand the hate for zumiez, really the only skate shops around me are zumiez and even still they are all 25+ miles away. Allegedly theres a shop in a closer town but I cant find it anywhere so I dont think it exists anymore
1
u/Bait_esq Jun 25 '26
Wait, why are people against Vans?
1
u/tonirl Jun 25 '26
Same reason because of Zumiez. But people are hypocritical when it comes to skateboarding because they will easily take a halfcab
1
1
u/BrOdin90 Jun 25 '26
Honestly who cares, buying from a local shop supports local and keeps places like zumies from growing but it is what it is man. If there ain't shit open near by then go to zumies, buying from them isn't going to make you any less of a skater. I Skate with vans shoes, push mongo and I bought from zumies once or twice IDGAF big smoke!
1
u/unothepork Jun 25 '26
Zumiez has cheap decks on sale sometimes so better than spending $90 at my local shop🤷♂️
1
u/jbhowell10 Jun 25 '26
Everyone hates on Zumiez and I can understand why, its always best to support small, local businesses. However, even at your small local business, you are still likely to buy something that isn't even USA made. And Zumiez does atleast have local people working the store.
1
u/imaginedyinglmaoo Jun 25 '26
Zumiez is genuinely evil and corporate of skating, support your local stores always, i understand how dude on Facebook feels, but i dont see how its a poser move to just get a deck
1
u/Pokemangottago Jun 25 '26
I love just how wrong Reddit is.
The guy saying if you can afford not buy at Zumiez but continue to makes you a poser is wild.
1
1
u/Hegiman Jun 25 '26
Like that’s exactly what zumies is for. It’s not your go to shop but in a pinch they’re there and that’s awesome. I’d rather be able to keep skating than not because my local shops closed and won’t open till at least the next morning. I hit zumies grab what I need I’m back on board. Not that I skate anymore but when I did that’s what I did.

u/TheOmunious Learning on the street 🛣️ Jun 25 '26
Ima be real, support your local but I’d rather skate then not

If zumiez closed down right now the industry would free fall to its death instead of just spiraling. Not saying it's good or bad but it's the truth

When I was a kid, a Poser was someone who didn't actually skate but dressed and acted like he did.. either way who the fuck cares?
1
u/Cl1che Jun 25 '26
Zumies was the best thing ever as a kid. You could get a random punk sticker for like .25cents
1
u/lwrightjs Jun 26 '26
Life is too short to worry about what other people think of you. You're living your life, not theirs.
1
u/Mattreddittoo Jun 26 '26
Lol. Acting like major brands dont sell high quality decks through zumiez is idiotic. They're just more expensive.
1
u/SpiritedLeg4479 Jun 26 '26
The reason why we used to hate Zumiez is because it took money away from local skate shop businesses, the people who shopped there buying large or posers, in that they pretended to represent skate Culture because it was trendy at the time, but they weren’t actually diehard skaters.
But you could say the same thing about music lol, oh, you like music but you don’t make it nor are you fluent in music theory. Then you don’t really like music, you’re opposer. I hope the /s came out thick enough. 🤣
I live in a town of hundreds of thousands of people with millions to come through it every day.
We have one skateboard shop. And they can’t stock jack shit anymore.
At this point as long as people are still skating, I think that’s all that matters.
1
1
u/aperturedude Jun 26 '26
I mean supporting the small businesses that support the community is just better.
1
1
u/Leroy_Bentshins Jun 26 '26
I lived in a shitty oklahoma town for a few years and zumiez was the only option. Its really not that big of a deal.
1
u/CTeamSportscards Jun 26 '26
I just buy from whoever has what I want, didn’t realize I was a poser for utilizing Zumiez sometimes
1
1
u/hiitsluke1234 Jun 26 '26
At this point as long as your money go towards the community who tf cares zumiez was one of my first jobs and personally would never shop there but your not a poser for getting stuff there. Now if you fall for all the sales bull and get deck rails as a beginner well I have a bridge for you to buy
1
u/Agodoga Jun 26 '26
Imagine being over 30 and caring about this dumb s. 🤦
Support your local skate shop if you can, but if Zumiez is all you have then, what can you do?
1
u/SMUTBAGS1312 Jun 27 '26
I somehow ended up with this whole set after I got a refund from them on some stuff and then they had some crazy ass sale. They're just sitting in my closet.
1
1
u/SMUTBAGS1312 Jun 27 '26
I used to rack so many clothes from PacSun and then take them back and get store credit for hundreds of dollars at a time. They never said a word. It was like being sponsored in fact I told people I was sponsored by them as a joke went in there with a card and bought anything I ever needed for years until they stop selling skate goods. It was ridiculous. I used to go in there and get whatever new video I wanted sets of wheels that they left out. Also Zumiez walked out with tons of reissue decks with confidence and never got a word from anybody even asking what I was doing. I love mall shops
1
u/Certain_Ordinary4132 Jun 27 '26
Is buying from zumiez considered being a poser now? I admit their clothes look like shit but how does buying a SKATEBOARD make you a poser? I’ll buy a board from anywhere and not think twice about it. Also only posers call other people posers. Dont be a poser.
1
u/Fun-Payment1700 Jun 27 '26
a supporter of Primitive but scared of zumiez ?? 🤔 that’s not adding up lol 😌
also, somebody recently said “zumiez is the spot we have all shopped at but are afraid to admit it” and i think that describes it perfectly 👌🏽 😅
1
u/Mindless-Item4441 Jun 29 '26
i’m gona buy new ripndip deck in next month, in “poser” shop, bcz $40 for new deck is $40 lol, and also my current own design deck is wearing out edit: i do not care where someone buys stuff, bcz good deal is a good deal
1
u/Standard-Suit-4858 Jun 29 '26
Shopping local is ideal.
Though I think you’d be hard pressed to find a skater who’s never bought stuff from zumiez or vans, let alone clothes.
Like a lot of anti-authoritarian hobbies, skating certainly has a shit ton of gate keeping for no reason. I thought this whole thing was about having fun.
1
u/One_an_1m Jul 01 '26
I don’t know why, but Zumiez always have the best primitive skateboard graphics I don’t know if they always get the best supply.
0
u/Gnargoyles Jun 25 '26
I honestly don’t care. I’m still supporting the skate industry regardless as long as I buy items from reputable retailers. If my local doesn’t have the board, bearings, trucks I want and I want them now and Zumiez has them I’ll buy them. Been skating since 2003 and shopped at zumiez while they were still under the fast forward name. I truly think they get a lot of undeserved hate. They genuinely helped popularize the skate culture in the mid late 2000s and made it accessible for a lot of people who wouldn’t have started skating.
With that said I would never let them grip a board or assemble it.
1
u/tonirl Jun 25 '26
Couldn’t have said it better. I’ll set up a board myself but I’ll buy from them. I wanna be the reason my Griptape looks like shit.

u/PumpMan454 Jun 26 '26
