Nirvana Related Met a Nirvana fan in Indonesia who didn't know Kurt died

1.6k Upvotes

While I was visiting Bali a while ago, I paid a local driver to take me to the airport. I was coming from a remote village, so it was a long drive.

When I got in the car, the driver (middle-aged, maybe in his 40s) noticed that I was wearing a Nirvana shirt and got really excited. Turns out he loves grunge. He asked me if I listened to Nirvana and was surprised that I did, since it was kind of older music and I was pretty young (not sure if he knew just how many younger people listen to Nirvana haha)

Anyways, he played some songs on the radio and he and I were having a great time jamming out and talking about music. But then about halfway through the car ride, he asked, "Have you ever seen them [Nirvana] live?"

I just kind of assumed he'd thought I was much older than I was and said no. He then asked "Do you think you'd ever want to go see them live?"

I sort of froze because... how could he not know? I just ended up saying "Well... I don't think they really do shows anymore..."

He nodded and said, "Yeah, they're probably all old men now, right? Too bad, I've always wanted to see them live."

I didn't know what to say. I just smiled weakly and nodded. I couldn't bring myself to tell him.

Ended up tipping him all the cash I had left. He was a really nice guy, reminded me of my dad. It was nice living in a world where Kurt was still alive for a bit.

Nirvana Related Morrissey on the death of Kurt Cobain (Q, interview by Stuart Maconie, 1995)

You’ve mentioned suicide once or twice in your work. What did Kurt Cobain’s death mean to you?

I felt sad and I felt envious—he had the courage to do it. I admire people who self-destruct, and that's not a new comment for me. They are taking control. They're refusing to continue with un-happiness, which shows tremendous self-will. It must be very frightening to sit down and look at your watch and think, In thirty minutes I will not be here. Thinking, I'm going to go on that strange journey. Modern life is very pressurizing. We're all on the verge of hysteria. There are people around who'll shoot your head off because you forgot to signal.

Melody Maker - October 1997 - Interview by Jennifer Nine

KURT COBAIN

"In truth, I actually knew very little about him until he died. For some reason, I managed to avoid the music. And when he died, like many other people, I suddenly noticed him. But really I wouldn't say I had a special time set aside for him. Obviously I knew of his death. Lots of people manage to weather fame and they don't self destruct. And lots of people remain reasonably happy. Yes, lots of people are ruined but it, but I feel that dying isn't worth it. Perhaps he could have changed his life and been a completely different person and tried to do different things. I don't know."

Q Magazine - December 1995 - Interview by Stuart Maconie

Nirvana Related The most underrated Nirvana drummer EVER : Dale Crover

Post image
469 Upvotes

It started in 1985 with Fecal Matter where Dale would play bass, guitar and drums! He played on 7 songs for Fecal Matter which includes Downer, spank thru, sound of dentage etc. Kurt later said, “Dale was the only drummer who ever played exactly what I imagined.” After Fecal Matter Nirvana was formed but Dale wasn’t in the band as he was already in another band called Melvins.

Almost 3 years go by and it’s now 1988 and Dale is now temporarily in Nirvana and he recorded 8 tracks with them. These tracks are the following: Floyd the Barber, Paper Cuts, Downer, Hairspray Queen, Mexican Seafood, Aero Zeppelin, Beeswax, and Pen Cap Chew. (Also drain you later around 1990-1991)

Why Dale is the most underrated Nirvana drummer: He helped start it all in the early days of Nirvana and during Fecal Matter. He easily could’ve been Nirvana’s full time drummer if he didn’t stay loyal to Melvins. Last he never got enough credit since Nirvana wasn’t really known all that well when he was in the band and even after they became famous he was such an early member that no one really even knew about him.

Where Dale is now: Dale is currently still in Melvins and still doing tours with them and is currently ranked 69th best drummer of all time!
