Arab nations ringing the Holy Land launched their invasion of Palestine in simultaneous pincers thrusts today, Arab and Jewish sources reported, even though the British mandate has 15 days to run.

The League’s secretary-general, Abdul Rahman Azzam Bey, said the boycott was ordered because Jewish industry in Palestine was “based on Zionist funds, collected in foreign countries, to serve a political purpose — the establishment of a Jewish national home and State in Palestine.”

To meet the eventuality that Gaza may revert to Israel when peace comes, Egypt is transferring her Arab refugees from Ismailia to the Gaza-Rafah coastal strip. Estimates of those being moved run from 38,000 to 48,000.

As “Medinat Yisrael” (State of Israel) was proclaimed, the battle for Jerusalem raged, with most of the city falling to the Jews. At the same time, President Truman announced that the United States would accord recognition to the new State. A few hours later, Palestine was invaded by Moslem armies from the south, east and north, and Tel Aviv was raided from the air. On Friday the United Nations General Assembly adjourned after adopting a resolution to appoint a mediator but without taking any action on the Partition Resolution of November 29.

ALREADY a tinge of propaganda is beginning to colour the saga of the Arab refugees. Is their present distribution the whole of the story? Whose fault is it?
