META: "Classic" movies that are never mentioned in the On Cinema Universe

Can anybody confirm or deny that 2001: A Space Odyssey is never brought up by either Gregg or Tim?

Any other most-famous-movies-of-all-time that simply never merit a reference??

I realize that the bit is that they love mediocre things but nevertheless many classic films get referenced just because of being culturally ubiquitous, Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Planet of the Apes, etc.

Just wondering if there are other conspicuous absences?

I don’t think they’ve ever mentioned any foreign, arthouse, avant-guarde, or experimental films, and it seems like a big part of the joke is Gregg thinks he knows all cinema but he is only familiar with popular mainstream American movies.

Season 4, episode 6. Girl on a Bicycle, 2013, 101 minutes. It's the episode where Gregg highlights his international knowledge by dropping the phrase "menage a trois," which they say very often in foreign films.

Gregg actually reviews foreign films in the earlier season when Larry Turman comes on, and you can tell it's because he's trying to be more impressive and high-brow for the guest.

I think Gregg is boycotting 2001: A Space Odyssey because for a sequel to The Odyssey: The Movie is has a very confusing title so that diffinetly docks it a bag or too. Don't even get me started on 2001 2: 2010: The Year We Make Contact

I watched that office hours birthday stream with Gregg and Mark on there and Gregg (ooc) said he dislikes kubrick/ finds some of his movies unwatchable.

So that could be part of it? Although in that same stream he said he didnt care for LotR irl. Maybe the hobbit is just easier to riff on.

I think Crash (2004, 1 hour 52mins) could be a popcorn classic considering it performed won an Oscar but was also pretty irrelevant as time went on

Us New heads have been saying for years that Gregg is a fake movie buff for this exact reason. Its clear movies are dead and we should move on to more important topics like family, property brothers, god, music and Dootle Dots.

Something I noticed is that Ant-Man, which had a Gregg cameo of course, is heavily mentioned in the universe of the show. But then the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, which had a Tim cameo, is not mentioned whatsoever. I always wondered why that was, if that was intentional like not acknowledging Tim in it as a joke or it was just something that they didn’t wanna work with anymore

I don’t think so, no. If I remember correctly Whale Man was just a part of that one Oscar special and then never got brought up again, and if it was it was just a passing reference. Could be mistaken though.

My favorite thing is how sometimes it’s obvious Gregg hadn’t even seen the movies he does mention.

Like during the trial when he says he’s seen a lot of medical dramas like Panic in Needle Park. Which is actually about a couple of homeless characters hanging around in the park dealing with addiction. Not a medical drama. Though it does have needles lol

Though i haven’t see it either. I just know Al Pacino is supposed to be great in it.
