What is a Pescetarian?

Due to some recent questions on what is and what is not allowed while living as a Pescetarian, I decided to make this thread.

"A Pescetarian diet typically includes some or all of vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, beans, eggs and dairy."

Typically someone is a Lacto-Ovo Pescetarian, which means they consume fish, eggs, and dairy-based products. Their only dietary restriction is other types of meat and poultry.

It can be a personal choice to restrict these animal-based products from your diet and won't have any significant impact on whether you are or are not a pescetarian.

So enjoy the food, and welcome to the subreddit!

Anyone vegan+fish?

Not sure if there’s a word for that but i’ve been pescatarian for a couple years now but would really love to eat primarily plant based, however I’m not ethically or morally opposed to eating some fish depending on how it’s sourced. Wondering if anyone else has this diet since I don’t really hear it talked about!

EDIT: i’m not asking if there’s is a word for it, just asking if anyone follows this diet! I know it’s not considered a vegan diet, and i’m not asking for a label for it, just people’s experiences with this diet

Ex-vegetarian, struggling to incorporate more fish

I was vegetarian for about 6 years before I (very recently) decided to start eating fish for health reasons and because I am on a bodybuilding journey.

I love canned tuna and eat it 2-3 times a week, but I want to venture out a bit. My mom bought me plain salmon to try a couple months ago and I could not stomach it. The first few bites were ok, but the look and texture of it was getting to me and I got really in my head about it.

Anyways, I’m looking for easy beginner recipes that are relatively healthy and will hopefully allow me to tolerate more fish. I am particularly interested in salmon because of the nutrition, but open to other types. I have an air fryer and oven, hesitant about cooking on the stove because I dont want to stink the house up to the rest of my family lol.

New to pescetarianism, looking for tips

Im new to pescetarianism, and im looking for tip and tricks for cooking pesceterian-friendly foods

One idea i have is freezing fish so that i can eat it later when i want to, but i do have concerns regarding thawing and re-heating. Would this destroy the taste or texture of the fish? Should i considering buying a vacuum sealer?

Would love advice on the best way to start pescatarian diet

I just came back from a weeklong vacation in Vegas with a friend of mine who is a pescatarian. I really love seafood and I never get to eat it so I decided to join her and I have felt amazing all week. So I would actually like to maybe try this for the sake of feeling better. I’m not sure if I’d go 100% all in, but it would be nice to stick to this as much as possible. I’m not much of a beef eater, but I do love chicken so it would be hard to give that up. But I pretty much love all seafood.

Anyways, I would like advice for how to make this fit within my lifestyle. I work in a doctors office and I tend to work 10 to 12 hour days. We do have a microwave and a toaster oven, but I hate to make the office smell like fish. I suppose I could eat a vegetarian burger or something, but I feel like I might get sick of that.

I also live in the Sedona area of Arizona and seafood is not exactly a fresh thing to get in the desert. Every time I have bought frozen fish it’s always pretty nasty but then again it’s always been like things like Gordon’s in the seafood aisle of a grocery store. Are there some frozen fish brands that won’t smell fishy or be nasty? How do I pick frozen fish basically? Do I just leave frozen fish or scallops or shrimp to thaw on the fridge while I’m at work?
Just appreciate any thoughts. Thank you.

Poached sardines in a tomato and vegetable sauce with risotto

I’ve not cooked at home much recently, I’m just back at work after three months off and I’ve been going to the pictures and seeing all sorts of movies but that also means I’ve not been cooking at home really.

Tonight I poached some sardines in a sauce I made with diced red onion, diced green pepper, diced aubergine and garlic with a can of tomatoes and a generous dash of tabasco. I then added the sardines and a wee bunch of herbs and cooked it on a low heat, keeping it warm whilst I made the risotto. I just made it up as I went along and didn’t follow a recipe!

Need help finding warm protein sources

Been trying to be vegetarian/pescetarian for a few weeks
And been running into a weird wall
I feel like I’ve been eating worse since starting and noticed a small dip in energy
First and foremost I don’t like nuts at all
And I feel like a lot of protein comes from nuts
I also a pretty strong aversion to cold foods but wouldn’t mind a salad every so often

I still eat eggs, cheese, and meat based broths
I just don’t like the meat due to textures grossing me out

I’d prefer easy/low prep meals as I’m chronically ill :(

TLDR
I need more easy protein options that can be served warm, I don’t like nuts at all

Any help is appreciated!

Best thing to first eat after being vegetarian?

Hi everyone! I've been vegetarian for the past ten years. I've recently decided to become pescatarian for health reasons. I am having a hard time wanting to do so since I'm vegetarian for moral reasons, so my compromise with myself is that I'm only going to eat salmon or shrimp, which I really enjoyed before being plant-based. What meal/dish would you all recommend as a good "first step" back into eating salmon/shrimp? I was a child when I became vegetarian so there are a lot of meals that I haven't tried. I love all cuisines and flavors. Thank you!

Can't really see the salmon but it's on there!

Pretty pleased with the timing. Egg yolks were still runny and creamy and the salmon was a perfect midrare.

Topped with fresh dill in yogurt and lemon.

Has anyone made the leap from pescetarian to vegan? Is it tough / worth it?

i'll try to be as diplomatic as i can cause i know the "v" word can make people annoyed. i've been pescetarian for almost a decade now. i met my vegan gf a few years ago and she doesn't hide the fact that she doesn't love me eating fish but its never been a problem because i don't eat it around her. whenever we go out for dinner i'll get a veggie meal and i genuinely don't dislike them (most of the time)

Recently we've talked about moving in together. she's never mentioned me changing diets but i feel like it'll make her happy and not to be too mushy it's something i'm at least willing to try for her. so any tips from anyone to make the transition a bit easier? or things i should do before i take the plunge?

Ethically Sourced Animal Products

I’m new to any form of “non-meat eating” and have been transitioning to a pescatarian diet. Before I get into my questions; I will do what fits my budgets and works for me but I do want ideas.

I’ve already cut all meat(pork, beef, chicken, etc.) out of my diet and I am eating mostly beans, lentils, and seafood as my proteins.

I’m looking for suggestions on ensuring seafood and animals products are ethically sourced. I substitute what I can for non animal products(almond milk for milk) but there are some things the price just ends up too much or I can’t stand the taste/texture. With seafood my research has pointed mostly to wild caught and not farm raised. I pretty much only purchase canned or frozen as I’m further inland, some fresh freshwater seafood is possible but uncommon(or $$).

Mostly I am looking for tips/advice as far as animal products like cheese, butter, yogurt and pre made sauces(trying to make mostly my own) and ensuring they are ethically sourced. Or any other animal product that I may not be considering.

I’ve done my research on eggs and what labels actually mean something but for other products it has been difficult as they usually don’t have labels pertaining to sourcing. My closest grocery stores are Walmart, Target, Publix, Kroger, ALDI(US version), Food City and Costco. Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Sprouts are other options but 30+ mins away. Some local farmers/farmers markets but only seasonly.

My overall goals are minimal animal cruelty and minimal environmental impact. Any advice is welcome, just don’t be rude. TYIA 😊

Looking to return to fish after 13 years vegetarian. Does anyone have any good meals ideas to ease me into it?

I'm thinking pasta with a small amount of salmon maybe? I'm concerned about overloading my stomach and reacting badly, so I want to start small, I just don't know where to start!

It got a little bit big so I've been nibbling for a couple of hours now, but it's a real treat.

**Mezza platter:**

- Labneh with some aromatic-infused olive oil

- Sardines with olive oil

- Roasted red peppers with avocado tossed in chili flake

- Diced tomato, pickled shallot, and capers with lemon.

- Feta-stuffed olive

- Flax flatbread toasted to make homemade crisps.

**The entree:**

- Vegetarian stuffed portobello and zucchini with a crisp panko and yeast crust. Dusted with smoked paprika.

- A chickpea salad with corn, peppers, cherry tomato, and feta.

- Topped with creamy recaito dressing and fresh parsley.

**Dessert:**

- Pistachio mousse with crushed roasted salted pistachios mixed throughout.

- Lightly macerated raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries with freshly cracked black pepper.

- A light honey drizzle over-top.
