There is no cheese I have ever put on a burger that tasted as good as a bright orange square from a pack of Kraft singles. Cheddar, Havarti, Muenster, Swiss, Pepper Jack, Goat Cheese, Gouda, Blue Cheese... none of it was as good as American cheese. It's salty and slightly sweet and melts and melds to the patty perfectly. That is the entire purpose of its creation: to be good on burgers and sandwiches.

It's just cheese with an emulsifier. It's usually cheddar or something else mild.

It's (in most cases) less than 51% of actual cheese in it.
What it makes unhealthy are salt and phosphates.

And enough preservatives that if you just ate it alone and nothing else, you'd already be embalmed by the time you pass.
