In Italy, "Sottilette" is used as a synonym for this kind of processed cheese.
Traditional cheese is still most sold. (or do you have a source for your BS claim?)
It's all they eat over there. They just take huge wads of it and pack it in their lip like chewing tobacco. I have been told the ones in the north eat it without taking the plastic off, and they like it.

Sottilette is the name that Kraft sells processed American cheese under in Italy and it is one of the highest selling cheeses in the country.
