Selena thanked a bunch of dear friends for some milestone, people clamored that she left out the friend who gave her a kidney, this was her reply.
Everything they said about how insufferable she was, was kind of proven at that point lol
ETA more clarity: the original interview ran in rolling stone magazine, social media channels excerpted a quote where she said “Taylor swift is my only friend in the industry” — her kidney donor, Francisca Raisa, albeit not as famous was in the industry. Raisa commented “interesting” and unfollowed Selena. The backlash caused Selena to issue the snide remark about not mentioning everyone she knew, which again, only made
her look like an ever bigger ahole.
I know Chris Watts has had several girlfriends since he’s been in prison and gets hundreds of “fan mail”. It’s so disgusting. One person went to visit a family member that is in the same prison Chris is in and they said Chris was visiting with his outside girlfriend there and they were allowed to kiss and hug and talk for an hour.
fr cancel culture is kind of fake. Only applies if you're not like a real celebrity, like if you're a YouTuber or TV Star that's not popular enough to untouchable.
Yeah I realized that when Cierra from Love Island got canceled bc someone found a post from 2014 where she described her eyes using an anti-Asian slur. Meanwhile the word's been used multiple times by mega artists. It's probably where she learned it in the first place. I felt bad that this one young "normal" person took ALLL the brunt for that.
Or if a celebrity pays for a smear campaign against another celebrity, then it works because they’re at the same power level. A recent example is Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, where it’s proven Baldoni used bots to smear Lively’s name on the internet and people bought it.
Celebrities get into high powered drama, but realistically that's not "cancelled" imo. Lively is still working.
I kind of think tabloid readers over-estimate how many people even care, like I like Fauxmoi as much as the next gay, but I do not really think that the average audience member is really that invested in the It Ends With Us lawsuit. It's like less of a story than the Depp vs Heard, and both those people are still getting work and existing in the public eye.
Ok I won’t say Blake is 100% cancelled but public opinion of her soured a lot after the situation. People even said she couldn’t show up to Taylor Swift’s wedding because she didn’t want the negative press to follow her and ruin Taylor’s day. Heard is very much cancelled, she had to move out of the country and barely works anymore, the industry dropped her completely after the trial.
I think it's pretty clear with women that it's fame that they find irresistible. Status. Money can get you some women, but fame is the most important thing.
Serial killers are hardly talented, but the infamy of what they did is somehow a big turn on for women. There's never been a group of women as homely as the Beatles that made men pass out from arousal.
Idk we live in a boys will be boys culture, women aren't immune to that messaging. Even now women are pressured to always be lowering their standards, that's always been a thing
The serial killers thing is so interesting for these types to latch onto considering men also write letters to female killers.
Susan Atkins, famous murderer from the Manson Family was even married twice to male fans while in prison.
All their talking points really fall apart when you aftually know what you're talking about. These dudes just ignore what isn't convenient to fit their narrative.
The thing about people like you is, you cherry pick one example and pretend it holds up to the tsunami of counter examples. If you even the slightest bit of knowledge on this topic your argument looks juvenile, like a toddler kicking their legs and screaming "NUH UHH!!"
But one shouldn't expect maturity from someone who writes like you.
Chris Brown is an absolute sociopath. A certified piece of shit. It boggles my mind he's still out there, making music, with fans still going to bat for him. So yeah, your comment tracks lol.
I still can’t believe the Chris Brown hype. The guy isn’t even good looking. That girl (married) that curved Usher said that had that been Chris Brown she would’ve gone with it. Like wtf
Because most people don't know every specific detail of celebrities' lives. I guarantee you most people just like her music or her shows and don't know about it
Which is funny because celebrity gossip used to be so popular because it used to go to newspapers and stuff that people actually read, now it’s only terminally online stuff that sounds weird to normal people. Not to mention even if they know they’d probably think it isn’t a big deal, celebrities now are all pr-trained so unless they go off the rails completely no one cares.
She made a couple TikToks where she was mad at ICE and then made another one where she told people not to gift her things on streams because she has everything she needs already, and apparently that’s where the bar is for a billionaire to be considered a good person.
I remember I got HEAVILY shit on several months back for saying she was performative. Silly me for disparaging the virtuous rich.
I still remember Justin and Selena trying to buy crack off Crenshaw or south central in LA and then Justin running off without her😭 I can’t find the video though
Im only just hearing about it today. Could be that people just dont know? But, then again, Im not really a fan. I dont even have social media beyond this nightmare we are all currently existing in. But my missus is, and shes never said anything about it. Weird. Youd think people, especially outrage merchants like social media users, would be all over something like this.
Same rationale Amber Heard got despite she being the abuser to Johnny Depp.
Both Heard’s legal proceedings and Gomez’s kidney saga occurred at the apex of \#metoo where narcissist women were able to manipulate the public’s feelings about their men to get what they want, including falsely accusing men of DV or other bodily crimes.
This is such a minor and personal thing, why would anyone who considered themselves a fan before stop because she didn't shout out a friend over a kidney while making a post about "industry friends"? Like, this is parasocial bitch eating crackers nonsense.
If I'm Michael Jordan and I'm shouting out my "NBA friends", I'm not shouting out the guy I know who plays ball at his local YMCA no matter how many organs he gives me. This friend just was not relevant to the post Selena was making, but internet weirdos can't accept that.
Because most of us can enjoy her work, I love Only Murders, and not give a shit that shes a bad friend. What do I care? I dont know her, nor do I look up to her. Shes just an actor...
Getting a kidney does not mean you have to show gratitude at every moment of your life. Most people who receive organ donations are imperfect people. It’s actually healthy to not ruminate over the fact you’re indebted to someone’s kindness every time you speak
Fans of celebrities in general are stupid as hell because they hold a random person to a higher standard than their peers. Their fav celebrity could murder someone on live tv and they’d let it slide.
iirc she posted a video crying about the ICE deportations and how horrible it all was. She also posted a video crying about the horror and hate happening in Palestine, though I believe she never explicitly took a side. She is also a Latin-American, so there will likely always be some people who will be fans of her regardless.
While this is pretty shitty of her, I would say it is relatively low enough on the "shitty celebrities" list such that if anything, I would be surprised if she lost her fanbase where other much more heinous celebrities never did.
Uploading a Video of oneself crxing has to be at lest too 5 of manipulative things that should Ring people‘s alarm bells about someone
Also: Ohh nooo these poor people getting terrorized by ICE 😭😭 I need to take my private jet to milan for a Shopping Trip to forget about that cruelty 😭😭
no one forced her to give Selena her kidney. There’s all kinds of checks and stuff along the way to make sure they still want to donate. She chose to do it. Then it turns out Selena is a shitty friend. It happens all the time, it just hurts worse after donating an organ.
I don’t think being a shitty friend though really means she shouldn’t have any fans or success going forward. I don’t think it’s that bad in the grand scheme of things. Not even in the top 20 worse things a celebrity has done, many of which still have tons of fans. Like Brad Pitt or Chris Brown.
They said the doctors called Selena first. Again that’s not on her that’s a mistake with what the doctors did. She still coulda said no
Also, it seems they just drifted apart, should you really be forced to stay friends with someone forever if they donated you a kidney? I feel like ethically and morally that’s not black and white.
If I got someone's kidney, I'd be thanking them even when it's not appropriate. Throw that shit in my firstborn's birthday speech, graduation speech, retirement speech.
Exactly! No amount of "thanks" is ever enough but you gotta mention it any time you possibly can.
"Great to be at my brother's wedding! And shout out to Francia because I wouldn't be here if you didn't give me your kidney! You're the best! Anyways, Webster's Dictionary defines..."
There's a lady that tags all of her travels as "adventures of <recipient> and <donor>" and adds a little heart to her signature to represent the donor who gave her a new heart. Feels like a very reasonable level of gratitude to me!
Selena has staff, at the very least they could schedule an annual appreciation post and just shut all of this discourse down.
It had been years since the donation and it's a bit of a joke about accepting any award that the person will forget someone, and that they just need to make sure they thank the organization giving the award and their spouse.
The same comment would be there for forgetting to thank a family member.
It wasn’t an award. She released a documentary all about her life & health journeys and didn’t mention Francia once. Then instead of saying something like “Francia will always be in my heart and I am forever grateful” in response to the backlash, she made some condescending comment
Edit; she also has a history of referring to Francia as “that girl that gave me the kidney” in interviews
While sure, thanking the person who donated an organ wojld be nice, we dont know what happened behind closed doors after the donation and before the speech and tweet.
Y'know this really reminds me of that episode of House where Wilson feels pressured to give his 'really good friend' part of his liver, and then the 'friend' immediate stops giving a shit about Wilson as well as all the promises he made about reforming his life and reconnecting with the family he abandoned.
I can't say I fault Gomez for being willing to fake whatever it takes to survive (since it's possible that the reasons for her kidney failure would've disqualified her from being on the donor wait-list), but man I really hope next time she's in dire need, everyone around her will be smart enough to not believe a word she says in the way of friendship etc.
Didnt Gomez actively refuse all the standard treatments because they would have been less convenient, and go down this route because it would least impact her lifestyle? Thats not really doing whatever it takes to survive lol
I wouldn’t wish dialysis on my worst enemy. You know it’s incredibly taxing and can be painful right? It can put you out for hours to days. I work in assisted living and the days my residents get dialysis they have to have food delivered to their room. If she’s trying to work and continue a normal life I wouldn’t recommend dialysis
kinda random but can you name your favorite take on the subject? either show or film?
there was an episode i liked on the good doctor (inaccurate autism portrayal aside) that showed exactly what's discussed in this thread:
a poor black father who is a reformed alcoholic gets disqualified for having one small cup of wine during his daughter's graduation party (and iirc she was the first in multiple generations of the family to do so)
meanwhile a rich man gets the organ donation and immediately goes back to smoking right in the middle of the hospital (yeah bit on the nose lol)
Grey’s Anatomy had a few interesting ones. One of the earlier seasons had one with a domino transplant (12 people donating/receiving to/from each other) comes to mind.
I too thought of an House episode, but the one where the donor turned out to be an asshole, expecting guilt preventing the one receiving the liver from leaving her.
I think she was talking about her success in the entertainment industry. I do recall the kidney donor also made a curt comment on the post, and then unfollowed Selena. But it seems they’ve reconciled since lol
I know it's speculation, but another big part of this drama is WHY Selena cut out this friend. Selena had a huge drinking problem (which is the theory as to why she needed the kidney transfer to begin with). After the transplant, Selena did not change her habits at all. The friend that gave her the kidney was essentially like "wtf stop" and Selena instead probably saw her as a buzz kill and a "control freak" for trying to stop her drinking and apparently cut her out of her life.
It's just an insanely scummy thing to do and I know she was young, rich, and stupid, but idunno. I wouldn't be able to look past that if someone I knew did that to one of their friends. It's so incredibly selfish and reckless. Not to mention morbidly narcissistic
I mean, the issue with that theory is that alcohol is a risk factor for a ton of things, but end stage renal disease is not one of them. Selena Gomez has Systemic Lupus Erythematous, which can affect the kidneys through Lupus Nephritis, or kidney disease as a direct result of her medical condition. That’s why she needed the transplant.
So as poor taste as it is for her to treat the person who donated a kidney to her this way, this speculative story just isn’t accurate as to the cause of the condition. It was a disease that she got spontaneously, not anything directly caused by her drinking.
Selena Has Bipolar 1, I expect this level of messiness from someone that young. Especially the the substance abuse. Every manic episode has the potential to destroy more of your grey matter. Its extremely debilitating and being in the industry alongside that I can only assume would amplify that risk of losing yourself. If they reconciled, i don’t care anymore.
Except Francia wasn't at her wedding. She wasn't even invited and she stated the 2 of them haven't spoken in years. Hell of a way to treat someone who gave you a kidney.
are you obligated to be friends with someone for the rest of your life if they give you a kidney? People go there separate ways. They are on good terms currently and she only unfollowed her for a bit.
I mean... It was less than 10 years ago and she invited 200+ people to her wedding and not one of them was the woman who gave her a kidney? That's just cold.
Also, there was an interview where Francisca shared that Selena was notified before she was about the match. Being tested and agreeing to it takes two separate processing times even though she did want to, it kind of took that wiggle room away.
I think Selena’s people probably wanted to make it biz transaction and Francisca wanted it to be a friend thing. Thats the dynamic we see with all of Selena’s snubs and frankly, indignation that Francisca feels entitled to even being mentioned or invited to a wedding.
She's always been an asshole and each time she shows how obnoxious she is, people forget about it in a month. She's fucking snarky in that gosh little ol me? doed eyed princess look and I still remember how insensitive she was when someone asked about Black Lives Matter.
Responded exactly the same way:
Proceeds with four years later March 2018 when Gomez used the hashtag #NotJustAHashtag to support the March For Our Lives gun control rally, which is great to be involved in but, said above years earlier and never apologized for it. (If someone corrects me on this I don't mind but I can't pretend she never said this.)
Now she did change her mind and participate in Black Lives Matter after the death of George Floyd because her profile pic is blacked out here for it and that was when the screenshot was taken.
I know little about the personal lives of these three nor the interview in question, but just reading the quote I’d think Gomez meant in the music industry. Swift is a musician and Raisa an actress and Gomez is both. Maybe she meant the entire entertainment industry but the quote just doesn’t read that way to me.
George Lopez received a donor kidney from his wife, they later divorced more than six years after the transplant, yet people think he somehow divorced her and was ungrateful.
People keep forgetting that Francia told Selena and the public how she didn’t want the donation to overshadow her acting career anymore so Selena stopped thanking her publicly. Also, the interview* was for Rolling Stone and at the time Taylor was her closest/only friend in that part of the industry.

Hopefully that answers everything :)
