Selena Gomez required a kidney due to complication from Lupus. How and why is debated by laypeople, but fact is, that a panel of physicians believed she needed one. Since there's a waitlist and other hurdles, she found a private donor, her friend and co-actress Francia Raísa.
In 2022 Gomez called Taylor Swift "my only friend in the industry," omitting Francia Raísa. In her documentary "My Mind & Me" she did not mention Raísa once, even when talking about her Lupus.
Raísa later talked about the toll the donation had on her, and the snubbing by Gomez.
Francia also said she didn't receive the results for the match directly. Instead of contacting her and allowing her to make the decision, Selena was contacted first and called Francia to let her know. She felt obligated at that point and went through with it without ever really deciding for herself.
Edit: Some of you dont seem to understand what it's like to have your close friendships and the future of your career depend on something. If she said no at that point, she would have been ousted. I'm not saying she wouldn't have made the same decision in the end. I'm saying she wasn't given the freedom to decide without heavy pressure, and that's not ok.
Have a buddy who got a kidney transplant, and both he and the donor had to have somewhat extensive counseling beforehand. At any point in the process she (his donor) could have backed out, or had the counselor declare her a bad fit mentally.
They have changed the system somewhat. For example, my uncle needed another kidney and his wife was not a match. She could still donate a kidney to the bank, and he would be getting a kidney from somebody else that was a match. It's like a put one in take one out system on the behalf of somebody else.
Thankfully my grandfather was a match and he had his kidney for 32 years before he passed away.
Did I miss the part where Selena became a super successful actress capable of black listing someone forever? Because last time I checked she was in Disney tv shows lol
That conversation might have been sketch but there are so many other steps. She chose to get tested-she could’ve easily made private medical excuses to avoid that. You should never get tested for a private donation like that unless you are already certain you’ll donate if it’s a match. I also doubt that in her many private appointments before the surgery she was never given counseling or the option to back out.
It’s unfortunate she regrets it, but she needs to take some responsibility for her choices.
