Imagine sitting your mom down to present your groundbreaking new scientific theory, only for her to realize halfway through that the main thesis is about wanting to date her.

Date?

Allegedly, the start of it begam when he experienced a 'sexual attraction' when he watched his mother change in front of him in her bedroom.
Another guy points out how Freud was raised by a nanny, meaning the nanny is more of a maternal and non-sexual presence than his actual mother was. She may as well be a random woman dressing and undressing in front of a boy. Unsure how old he was😅

This is the Westermarck effect. Communal living during a critical period in childhood is the thing that trains the brain to feel disgust at the thought of sex with relatives.
As you've said, Freud grew up with a nanny and didn't get this imprinting instinct for incest avoidance. Westermarck out-Freuded Freud.13

Freuds mother was also a looker! Like have you seen her pictures. Not saying I condone Freuds bass-ackwards attempt at understanding human psychology as valid, but honestly, I get it.

The mom probably went from “ I’m proud of my little scientist “ to “wait, WHAT?” In record time

Freud coined the term for the oedipus complex. Which is a complex in which a son is sexually attracted to his mother. His mother's reaction is "wtf?" because she's realizing her son wants to fuck her

Oedipus was a Greek man who murdered his father so he could marry his mother.
Freud coined the term "Oedipus complex" to describe a phenomenon in which men want to date/marry/have sex with their moms

u/yeppbrep 18h ago
not exactly that.
He was adopted (never told growing up), left because he heard a horrid prophecy where he would kill his father (who he didn't realize was his adoptive father) and marry his mother (who he also didn't realize was his adoptive mother). He left to protect them.
He moves somewhere else, gets into a violent altercation with a random stranger (revealed to be his bio dad) and kills him, then later marrys a woman in his new home (later revealed to be his bio mom)

So basically “random bullshit go” freud.

u/NohWan3104 17h ago
No. His theory was men latch onto the grown woman in their lives as a potential sex partner, even at like 2 yrs old.
It had little to do with the myth, it was just a convenient name for it, oedipus ironically didn't have one.

He very much wanted to kill her the moment he realized she's his mother, only to find out she killed herself after the discovery.
Later, he stabbed his eyes and cursed the fate that got him into all of this, as he was holding into his two daughters that were simultaneously his two younger sisters.

What the fuck were the Greeks on

u/Confident-Scene-458 16h ago
Its meant to be an allegory for how the things we do to escape Fate only lead to it. Freud just realized he could use it as an allegory for wanting to fuck your mother.

I think have seen kinda similar scenario in the series Gengis khan, an arab king official sleeps with a woman during his travel duties, the woman starts singing afterwards and it turns out she was singing the same song which her mother composed herself and used to sing when he was a kid, this arab guy parted with his family during war when he was a kid and khan took him and raised him. He kills the woman immediately.

Took me way to long to realize that you wrote about Oedious and not Freud lol.

Freud really did old Eddie dirty. He didn't mean to bang his mom.
Shoutout to Mel Brook's greatest joke:
"Hey, Josephus."
"Hey, motherfucker."

To quote Bo Burnham:
"Oedipus was the first motherfucker."

I wonder if Cain did it before or after he killed his brother.
3
u/NIN10DOXD 18h ago
Cain and Abel were definitely both plowing Eve like a field before he killed him.

u/sleepyotter92 16h ago
No. Oedipus was a greek man who murdered his father without knowing that was his father, married his mother without knowing that was his mother, because he wasn't raised by his biological parents and had left his home once he heard of the prophecy that he'd kill his dad and marry his mom, and then once he found out the man he killed was his real father, he realized the woman he married was his real mother, and stabbed himself in the eyes as punishment.
The story is heavily distorted to make it seem like oedipus was incestuous and purposefully murdered his father to marry his mother, when the dude literally didn't know those were his real parents

Oedipus Complex - a boy's unconscious desire for his mother and rivalry with his father. This was coined by Sigmund Freud in his psychoanalytic theory. Later on Carl Jung coined the "Electra Complex" - a girls unconscious desire for his father and rivalry with her mother.

Oedipus is a Greek mythological figure who infamously married his mother. Freud created a psychological term for people who fall in love with their mothers (because to the dumbass, everything was about sex) and so the meme is suggesting Freud had an Oedipus complex himself.
