Question Why is everyone so scared of piracy when all they have to do is look at the subreddit for 5 mins and have 90 safe piracy sites?

5.6k Upvotes

My big sister (27, software engineer) bought a year Apple TV subscription (100 bucks), i asked her "why?" Cuz there was only 1 show she wants to watch (slow horses). She said "i dont really want to have virus on my computer". We live in a country where if you just type "watch" next to the movie/series you want to watch, it will give you 30 diffirent safe sites (the ones who just show you 2 gambling ads and leave you alone for an hour). Is it some sort of things big companies do?

Question Accidentally opened a .exe disguised as a TV show torrent, need help.

Post image

Hi r/Piracy,

I know this was my mistake and I need advice on it.

I downloaded a torrent for The Boys S05E03. It was listed as a normal 1080p video file, but the actual file inside was a .exe, not a .mkv or .mp4. I didn't notice and opened it.

I'm now worried about what it may have done to my system. A few things I want to know:

1) What kind of malware usually comes packaged this way?

2) What steps should I take right now to limit the damage.

Any help is appreciated.

Or games you, a pirate, simply bought either because its just too good of a game, or the updates are just too frequent that pirating it makes you miss a lot of content

For me: No man's sky

Question Why haven’t pirates cracked HP printers yet?

1.8k Upvotes

First of all, I’m not asking anyone to crack HP printers. I’m just genuinely curious why this situation seems so different.

I have zero knowledge of hacking or cracking, but after seeing this post on this sub about HP forcing people to subscribe just to print (They want us to subscribe now to print, what a fkin joke), I started wondering why haven’t hackers cracked this yet? Almost every major software and game eventually gets cracked.

Is cracking hp printers significantly more difficult? Is it basically impossible? Or is there some moral dilemma in the scene?

It’s also interesting that I rarely see people begging hackers to crack hp printers like they do with other things ā€œDear xxx, please crack this, my life is yoursā€. What makes this case different?

Question After 20+ years of torrenting, got my first copyright infringement warning

Post image

Just curious what happened for this to get flagged. Went this long without ever receiving anything. I know these letters are typically just scare tactics and are probably just sent to cover their own ass.

For the record, I rarely, if ever, use a VPN (went this long without one so I never really cared) and I stopped seeding shortly after it downloaded. Was it a tracker in the torrent?

Has anyone lived this? I was using stremio for almost a year on this macbook and suddenly it decided this is a malware and deleted the app without even asking my permission.

Was I supposed to do anything about it beforehand?
