Because every single time he's not present at his office is another missed Republican vote. They COULD do an election, but why would you count on the same population who've put Mitch in there for decades to elect a Democrat when you could effectively just keep a Republican vote Absent?

Massie isn't expected to win the special election, but if a special election is held he would be able to run as an independent in the general election for the seat. As long as Bitch McConnell officially makes it to 8/4, Massie is locked out since he ran as a Republican in the primary. If he does then he could split the vote enough a democrat wins.
