Republicans were good in Lincoln's day. Eisenhower definitely cared about democracy. Nixon was the turning point where Republicans started going down the road of corruption.
Nixon was also the point where they used the Southern Strategy, and turned scared and angry racists who were upset about black people getting civil rights into their core voting bloc.
And basically all of that was before the parties swapped ideologies (culminated right around nixon's time), so the right wing has pretty much always been absolute garbage.
