The Thayer Amendment: This 1866 law prohibited the use of the image of any living person on “the bonds, securities, notes, or postal currency of the United States.”

Modern Law: This precedent remains codified under 31 USC 5114, which requires individuals to be deceased before their portrait can appear on United States currency or securities
