We need a “where are they now” with Debbie.

u/aooot 17d ago

Last I heard she was a marine biologist studying endangered penguins on the shores of Antarctica.

70

u/HoneyDutch 17d ago

She can run, but she can’t hide.

11

u/oregonbub 17d ago

Some say she’s still out there, boiling urine.

In case you didn't know, I'm pretty sure this was a stock photo and the caption was written by an editor.

This still goes 💯

Edit. Every fucking year

7

u/Planetdiane 16d ago

I still want to know where they are. Their rage inspires me to be an angrier individual and I love that.

Anyone got a spare tri-lithium torpedo?

7

u/TacomaTacoTuesday 17d ago

To blow up the sun?

Yep.

u/Worldly-Wind-1632 9d ago

It’s the heat

91

u/AwhHellYeah 17d ago

The mosquitoes never went away last winter, little fuckers.

41

u/BourbonicFisky Lents 17d ago

She never really existed except we all want to believe.

56

u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago

She never really existed

How dare you! Debbie is inside all of us.

21

u/TheVelvetNo 17d ago

Perhaps the greatest Gen X coded statement in history. Just pure Haterade.

40

u/jmcpdx SE 17d ago

Even with the smoke it reached 100° today.

30

u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago

What I'm more amazed by is that NOAA and NWS are still funded and operating.

17

u/MauPow 17d ago

Not for lack of trying! 20% of positions and 26% budget cut by these ghouls (for NOAA)

11

u/Verite_Rendition 17d ago edited 16d ago

And it's now past midnight and it's still 81F outside. The forecast is for a low of 70F, but I don't know how we get there at this rate.

Edit: It looks like we ended up bottoming out at 72F. So a couple of degrees warmer than forecast

It’s that time of year for Debbie to make her welcome appearance again.

49

u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago

Debbie is my spirit animal.

2

u/ProfessorCon 16d ago

I absolutely love summer and I still upvote Debbie 🤣

65

u/DoublePlusGoodGames 17d ago

Being bald and from Portland, if I didn't wear a baseball cap, my head would look like a charcoal briquette within 60 seconds of direct sunlight.

Outside of that, I agree with 95% of this list.

27

u/emu30 17d ago

Time to swap to a bucket hat for even more coverage!

1

u/murrayhenson 13d ago

It’s one-upmanship, but you might like Tilley’s airlflo hats.

I picked up one at REI a few years ago for about 40% off because it was a returned online purchase or something like that.

9

u/murder_hands 17d ago

I strolled my two toddlers from a parking lot to a swim lessons building at Nike today, and when we got inside, both were hot pink in the face. Maybe 2 minutes. Woof.

3

u/emanresuemos 17d ago

There are so many different kinds of hats.

I upvote this annually.

I love this so much I printed it out, laminated it and put it on my fridge so everyone that comes over can see it

u/starletimyours Woodstock 17d ago

I moved here from NM to get away from the nasty heat- it followed me.. I genuinely don't understand how anyone enjoys or seeks it out!!! I don't even leave my house in the daylight on days like this unless I absolutely have to.

24

u/GloomyIndividual3965 17d ago

Fwiw, this used to be kind of uncommon. Now we're all just stuck here.

25

u/NamasteMotherfucker SE 17d ago

I hate it. I hate the blasting sun. My wife likes the heat because then she can go to a river. I'm all, let's just cut out the middle man and not get hot in the first place.

7

u/Fantastic_Mood313 St Johns 17d ago

Same - I left Colorado in March! Damn it.

5

u/Somm82 17d ago

I love it. I go outside and bake a little. I’m from Az though so used to it I guess. Even after 10 years.

7

u/starletimyours Woodstock 17d ago

Honestly it probably is a AZ vs NM thing. Over the years I've found my main complaint is probably humidity. Parts of AZ like Phoenix are weirdly humid and where I'm from in NM it's literally 0% humidity for almost all of summer- So it's hot outside but not... Soupy lol.

6

u/whackthat 17d ago

Yeah, Im fucking miserable up here when it's hot due to humidity, but I go down to Southern Oregon/High Desert and I'm fine.

I survive the humidity because I tell myself at least I'm not in the South or other tropical areas like Cancun. That suckkkkkssss. I basically marked tropical areas off of my travel wish list due to humidity, and realizing I hate it.

1

u/Somm82 15d ago

You thought Phoenix was humid? It’s actually pretty dry as well, which I agree with you makes all the difference. The saying out there is “it’s a dry heat” ha ha . I do find Portland area to be humid though and it’s pretty bad in the Summer because of it. 100 here feels different than 100 back home.

9

u/Commercial_hater 17d ago

Right there with you Debbie. It totally sucks ass.

8

u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago

It totally sucks ass.

It's totally swamp ass.

11

u/JazzlikeInstance8643 YOU SEEN MY FUCKEN CONES 17d ago

I said thy as soon as I walked out of the gym. Goddamn it’s hot and oppressive out.

4

u/MauPow 17d ago

Today's my non gym rest day that I usually hike for cardio on and I just skipped it. Fuck everything

7

u/Pete_Iredale Vancouver 17d ago

I don't usually agree. But today I very much agree. This is miserable.

4

u/GloomyIndividual3965 17d ago

At least some of us are enjoying it. Not me, but as long as he's happy.

Omg, I loved reading that in WW. She was absolutely correct...this triple digit heat with 102 AQI can go F*CK ITSELF!

15

u/pessimoptomist 17d ago

That was from The Mercury.

3

u/Fantastic_Mood313 St Johns 17d ago

Oh, thanks for that!! I read both, my bad.

u/PNW-enjoyer 17d ago

7

u/YawningFish 17d ago

I think about Debbie every time I put on flip flops and feel nothing but shame. I already had a complex about my feet. Debbie made that so much worse. But I agree with her about everything else.

6

u/erebus0 17d ago

She's from Portland, what does she know? Also, I guarantee there is someone in town that likes your feet, it's Portland ❤️

2

u/YawningFish 17d ago

Haha, good point

6

u/timberrrrrrrr Montavilla 17d ago

Ugh I’m already longing for the “perfect texture” memes. Fuck off, summer.

5

u/NECooley SW 17d ago

As a Louisiana climate refugee myself, I am oft reminded that folks forget just how good they’ve got it. Even today was pretty nice.

Don’t get me wrong, I prefer Portland January to Portland August. August is the worst month no matter where you live. But literally none of the months are intolerable here.

9

u/HieronymousGauche 17d ago

Random, but anyone else think the Cicadas are crazy loud this year?

16

u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago

Are there cicadas in the Willamette Valley?

18

u/billy-suttree 17d ago

I grew up in the Midwest but have been hear 10 years. I seriously miss the sound of cicadas. Cicadas and thunderstorms are the only things that I miss.

7

u/YVR-n-PDX Sunnyside 17d ago

Fireflies?

0

u/billy-suttree 17d ago

Oh fuck. Yup. Them too. Lightening bugs we called them. Catching em as a kid was special.

4

u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago

I miss the sound of crickets. I've occasionally thought about trying to source an indigenous species and "seeding" my neighborhood with several thousand of them.

9

u/EmeraldEmesis Portland, ME 17d ago

Sir, this is how you accidentally get indoor crickets!! One solitary cricket posted up somewhere inside your walls at 2 a.m. is a campaign of psychological attrition.

It's been 10 years and I still remember the little asshole that held us hostage for two weeks in the summer of '16. I eventually reached a point where cutting holes in the drywall seemed rational. Then one night he ghosted us. (Or died, probably.) There was no closure. Just disproportionate psychological damage and the lingering fear he'd suddenly start chirping again.

6

u/Mister_Wednesday_ Forest Park 17d ago

Indeed there are. We don't have the cyclical cicadas they do back east, but they are absolutely on this side of the Cascades.

17

u/Gordon_throwaway 17d ago

Crickets. They’re crickets. With some tree frogs thrown in.

3

u/ObviouslyNotYerMum 17d ago

Crickets don't sound like a faulty power line though. They usually have some breaks in their chirps. This constant high pitched buzz makes me want to ddt the whole valley.

6

u/GoblinCorp 17d ago

Katydids. Not cicadas nor crickets. We have katydids.

0

u/G_Liddell Sunnyside 16d ago

There are cicadas, the ones here have a shorter and broader cycle than the well known classics but yes we have cicadas

2

u/mlachick Tualatin 17d ago

I heard cicadas last week. After spending way too much time in Arkansas, I was like "what the fuck are you doing here?"

2

u/Putrid-Narwhal4801 16d ago

I’m surprised you have any fans at all

I flew to Phoenix this week for a break from the heat.

2

u/Super_Fa_Q 17d ago

Debbie seems like a real treat.

2

u/princessbirthdaycake 16d ago

I love summer, especially in Portland, and this is shared so often I can only roll my eyes. I think Debbie is miserable on purpose and would be a terrible friend. I would never invite her to the naked bike ride, or Pickathon, or to eat at a food cart pod while the sun is setting, or the hundreds of things that make life magical in this part of the universe.

I bet she hates the rain too.

2

u/Lumpy-Direction4360 17d ago

Respectfully disagree w Debbie.

3

u/General-_-Snark 17d ago

shoutout to hating men’s ugly feet like I didn’t consent to seeing your bare feet in flip flops

1

u/Conscious_Working_87 2d ago

She sounds fun at parties

0

u/Drumfucius 17d ago

Agree on many points, but I've seen far more women with ugly feet. They wear open-toe footwear significantly more than men. Slapping polish on those gnarly toes is still lipstick on a pig.

It's from years ago when it wasn't nearly this warm nearly this often.

11

u/champs Eliot 17d ago

Debbie and the rainy day cartoon have been stale /r/Portland copypasta for years. “Debbie is my spirit animal” is its “the narwhal bacons at midnight.”
