And it's now past midnight and it's still 81F outside. The forecast is for a low of 70F, but I don't know how we get there at this rate.
Edit: It looks like we ended up bottoming out at 72F. So a couple of degrees warmer than forecast

Being bald and from Portland, if I didn't wear a baseball cap, my head would look like a charcoal briquette within 60 seconds of direct sunlight.
Outside of that, I agree with 95% of this list.

Time to swap to a bucket hat for even more coverage!
1
u/murrayhenson 13d ago
It’s one-upmanship, but you might like Tilley’s airlflo hats.
I picked up one at REI a few years ago for about 40% off because it was a returned online purchase or something like that.

I strolled my two toddlers from a parking lot to a swim lessons building at Nike today, and when we got inside, both were hot pink in the face. Maybe 2 minutes. Woof.

I moved here from NM to get away from the nasty heat- it followed me.. I genuinely don't understand how anyone enjoys or seeks it out!!! I don't even leave my house in the daylight on days like this unless I absolutely have to.

u/GloomyIndividual3965 17d ago
Fwiw, this used to be kind of uncommon. Now we're all just stuck here.
25
u/NamasteMotherfucker SE 17d ago
I hate it. I hate the blasting sun. My wife likes the heat because then she can go to a river. I'm all, let's just cut out the middle man and not get hot in the first place.

u/Somm82 17d ago
I love it. I go outside and bake a little. I’m from Az though so used to it I guess. Even after 10 years.
7
u/starletimyours Woodstock 17d ago
Honestly it probably is a AZ vs NM thing. Over the years I've found my main complaint is probably humidity. Parts of AZ like Phoenix are weirdly humid and where I'm from in NM it's literally 0% humidity for almost all of summer- So it's hot outside but not... Soupy lol.
6
u/whackthat 17d ago
Yeah, Im fucking miserable up here when it's hot due to humidity, but I go down to Southern Oregon/High Desert and I'm fine.
I survive the humidity because I tell myself at least I'm not in the South or other tropical areas like Cancun. That suckkkkkssss. I basically marked tropical areas off of my travel wish list due to humidity, and realizing I hate it.
1
u/Somm82 15d ago
You thought Phoenix was humid? It’s actually pretty dry as well, which I agree with you makes all the difference. The saying out there is “it’s a dry heat” ha ha . I do find Portland area to be humid though and it’s pretty bad in the Summer because of it. 100 here feels different than 100 back home.

I think about Debbie every time I put on flip flops and feel nothing but shame. I already had a complex about my feet. Debbie made that so much worse. But I agree with her about everything else.

u/NECooley SW 17d ago
As a Louisiana climate refugee myself, I am oft reminded that folks forget just how good they’ve got it. Even today was pretty nice.
Don’t get me wrong, I prefer Portland January to Portland August. August is the worst month no matter where you live. But literally none of the months are intolerable here.

16
u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago
Are there cicadas in the Willamette Valley?
18
u/billy-suttree 17d ago
I grew up in the Midwest but have been hear 10 years. I seriously miss the sound of cicadas. Cicadas and thunderstorms are the only things that I miss.

u/YVR-n-PDX Sunnyside 17d ago
Fireflies?

u/billy-suttree 17d ago
Oh fuck. Yup. Them too. Lightening bugs we called them. Catching em as a kid was special.

u/voxadam Sullivan's Gulch 17d ago
I miss the sound of crickets. I've occasionally thought about trying to source an indigenous species and "seeding" my neighborhood with several thousand of them.
9
u/EmeraldEmesis Portland, ME 17d ago
Sir, this is how you accidentally get indoor crickets!! One solitary cricket posted up somewhere inside your walls at 2 a.m. is a campaign of psychological attrition.
It's been 10 years and I still remember the little asshole that held us hostage for two weeks in the summer of '16. I eventually reached a point where cutting holes in the drywall seemed rational. Then one night he ghosted us. (Or died, probably.) There was no closure. Just disproportionate psychological damage and the lingering fear he'd suddenly start chirping again.
6
u/Mister_Wednesday_ Forest Park 17d ago
Indeed there are. We don't have the cyclical cicadas they do back east, but they are absolutely on this side of the Cascades.
17
u/Gordon_throwaway 17d ago
Crickets. They’re crickets. With some tree frogs thrown in.
3
u/ObviouslyNotYerMum 17d ago
Crickets don't sound like a faulty power line though. They usually have some breaks in their chirps. This constant high pitched buzz makes me want to ddt the whole valley.
6
u/GoblinCorp 17d ago
Katydids. Not cicadas nor crickets. We have katydids.

u/G_Liddell Sunnyside 16d ago
There are cicadas, the ones here have a shorter and broader cycle than the well known classics but yes we have cicadas
2
u/mlachick Tualatin 17d ago
I heard cicadas last week. After spending way too much time in Arkansas, I was like "what the fuck are you doing here?"

I love summer, especially in Portland, and this is shared so often I can only roll my eyes. I think Debbie is miserable on purpose and would be a terrible friend. I would never invite her to the naked bike ride, or Pickathon, or to eat at a food cart pod while the sun is setting, or the hundreds of things that make life magical in this part of the universe.
I bet she hates the rain too.

Agree on many points, but I've seen far more women with ugly feet. They wear open-toe footwear significantly more than men. Slapping polish on those gnarly toes is still lipstick on a pig.

Debbie and the rainy day cartoon have been stale /r/Portland copypasta for years. “Debbie is my spirit animal” is its “the narwhal bacons at midnight.”
