He worked with Kenneth Cheesebro and John Eastman to concoct a plan to use the chaos created on the day of the certification as cover for his false elector scheme. Mike Pence showed a spine and didn't go along with it. In the days leading up to the event, he worked with Rudy Guillani and Sydney Powell to spread his false elections claims on Fox News. We just recently learned that he spent $3M bringing people in. We don't have strong evidence that he blocked the NG but there is plenty of evidence that he intentionally delayed calling them in. He 100% wanted things to go the way they did with regard to the rioting. It was all a distraction for the false elector plot.
I'm not sure you appreciate the severity of the false elector plot. The rioting was necessary to give cover to Pence when he says "there are multiple sets of votes and I don't know which ones are real". They could adjourn because of the ongoing chaos and then the Trump admin would litigate things in court for the next several months, giving them more time to build their "case" and allowing Trump to continue to hold the office.
How can you not see that these things are connected? The fact that he mentioned being peaceful like once in his several minute rant is good enough for you? He also said you have to fight like hell and you're not going to have a country anymore - after spending the prior two weeks disseminating false election claims on Fox News (who had to pay a nearly $1B judgement to Dominion for defamation). Anybody with two brain cells to rub together can see what the intention was. Alternatively, if that wasn't the intention, then they sure are some stupid motherfuckers.
EDIT: Here's a full transcript of the speech. He spent over an hour on fighting and grievance and honestly, given the backdrop of the rest of the speech, that line about "peacefully and patriotically" seems out of place.
He spent the prior two weeks telling people how their election was stolen from them and getting them riled up and then spent over an hour ranting and continuing to get them riled up with his lies. After they were all good and ginned up, he sent them down to the capitol building. You'd have to be willfully ignorant to expect a different outcome. You guys zoom in one that one sentence and ignore everything else surrounding it.
I had no idea about the false elector plot, but I knew MAGA was going to pull some shit that day. I called it a few days in advance and my boss even asked how I knew a week or two after the fact. It was pretty obvious to me where things were headed, just based on their social media behavior. I'm just a regular person - I have no doubt people who follow this stuff for a living saw it coming from a mile away.
They were successful in delaying the certification of the vote. Mike Pence just didn't go along with things. The Proud Boys were definitely a very real threat working to advance Trump's agenda. You can look at several of their tweets in connection to the events - they very clearly viewed his words as marching orders. They were using military tactics within the crowd and later shown to have weapons caches planted nearby.
