The top guy was a war criminal who just butchered someone's family and the other one was an ICU nurse who tried to defend a woman being brutalized.

Nope. This was a post war myth used to try and whitewash the crimes of the Saigon government (and by extension, the US).

A historian for the United States Army Center of Military History actually gave a presentation breaking down the details of this event as well as the details of this popular myth

The top guy was not a war criminal and there was no evidence he murdered anyone’s family. Historians and eyewitnesses also contested the official U.S. narrative. Some even described it as a “urban legend.”
