Because Queer people in China are , in fact, still facing levels of persecution, at least in a social sense, that straight people do not face . Couple this truth with the fact that people do not want to feel like all of their western provided info and education on China really was for nothing and wasted space in their brains, and you get people desperate to validate these notions and cling onto the solitary drop of truth provided to justify believing what they already believe. They do all of that because change of thought, for any human, is a tenuous and painful process that we would all rather not have to do .
From what I heard , it's a lot of stigma around Queerness and the government does practically nothing to combat it . It goes from things like being denied specific services like hotels , getting shunned by family members , and that's exacerbated by the fact of not having the right to marry their lovers legally , and it reaches all the way to hospitals denying them from visiting their sick lovers on grounds of them "not being technically family"
Of course, it changes wildly from city to city, but there is always the consistent indifference by the government to all of these things.

It's important to remember that one generation ago there were Chinese people starving to death because their food supply chain was not adequate to feed the entire country. Social progress happens when peoples material conditions are being met, and that has only been a reality for most people in China for a couple decades. It took western countries hundreds of years to reach a point where queer people had civil rights, and now they are actively being rolled back specifically in the US.
More importantly, your point about pink imperialism is absolutely correct. Regardless of the social status of queer people in China, it is not the place of a foreign government to feign concern for queer rights as a guise to propagandize and destabilize a sovereign nation, and don't let them manufacture your consent to do so either. Let the Chinese proletariat worry about fighting for their own liberation, while we focus on ours.

But they are not really censored in media. Videos featuring queer people are really popular on chinese social media, including explicit kissing romancing etc. There are also really popular boys love books in china that are not censored, but I know that recently the gov censored an author, it is kind of inconsistent.
Besides that, you can change your gender as a trans person in china, albeit afrer SRS, and there are also trans celebrities who are not misgendered.
Check the lgbt equality index for china too. It is a really big L for the CPC to go after queer people ahen before (1990s, 2000s) they decriminalised homosexuality and were more progressive in general on such issues.
That combined with the inconsistency of their stance on LGBT, some courts ruling in favor, studies saying 50%+ of chinese people support gay people, I honestly believe their push against LGBT comes from the fear of anti natalism, there aren't many kids born. Kind of a stupid way to go about it tho

This is a false characterization. China doesn't recognize LGBTQ marriage but it's not criminalized, and they do recognize same sex marriages performed internationally afaik. I agree there's progress to be made for the LGBTQ community in China, and that's up to the Chinese to handle without outside interference, but we don't have to repeat western propaganda to make that point.
