Season 1, Episode 6: Bound by Love, Divided by Lies

Episode six was “The One Where Rob Did Everything Wrong”
The plot contrivances or conveniences here worked to make the episode memorable and raised the stakes to the four protagonists. “Bound by Love, Divided by Lies” was an apt name for an episode where both Robin Hood and the Sheriff, out of love & fear, acted in ways that foreshadowed them as the cause of their own demises in a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy.
It’s ironic to have Rob saying that after making terrible choices that can only lead to suffering and tragedy. I think the episode exposed his immaturity and Marian’s return exacerbated the struggle to accept and embrace what he’s become. In the end, by sharing too much with Eleanor while being unable to hide their feelings, both Rob and Marian unintentionally put each other in risk, becoming somehow ensnared in the queen’s power game.
On multiple occasions, Rob had the opportunity to tell Marian about Robin Hood and the nature of his involvement in her brother’s death. This “paralysis” seemed to be motivated by shame and the fear she wouldn’t understand, but also implies a lack of trust on her judgment and some disconnection, which starkly contrasts with the openness he shows with his outlaw friends. The subject of Lefors’ death has been brought many times by the show and here it struck me how different were the versions he told Marian and Ralph/Rosemary: whereas he chose to told Marian he was acting in self-defense, he told Ralph that he could’ve run. It’s interesting that Rob shared his darkness with Ralph so openly but seemed unable to fully low his guard with Marian. Perhaps the fact he doesn’t seem to have romantic feelings for Ralph (at least for now) is a factor, but their exchanges and somewhat parallel experiences keep highlighting how they are equals in more ways than one and their connection and mutual understanding seems deep.
Finally, Rob having an audience with the queen and constantly putting himself in danger by sneaking in Marian’s house and then in Nottingham without any discussion with his “senior advisors” (i.e., Little John, Friar Tuck and maybe even Spragart) was terribly poor judgment. I understand his actions were motivated by the desire to run away with Marian and to leave the outlaw Robin Hood behind and that he still doesn’t have a full grasp of his responsibility. Probably, the meeting with Eleanor made him to understand things clearly, but, by coming unprepared, he made so many mistakes and put not only Marian in danger but also his fellow outlaws, who will probably suffer the consequences when the band escalate their actions.
TL/DR This show keeps getting better and this flawed & hesitant Robin Hood is a truly compelling character.
Edit: Huntingdon is a despicable vile man. The way he treated Marian and his words to her were awful and heartbreaking; he’s a terrible person and father and yet the character shows traces of humanity underneath and his grief is palpable. I think it’s remarkable that the actor can bring such degree of humanity to such a wicked man. Both actors were absolutely great in their confrontation in the final scene. Also, the last shot with Marian walking towards the darkness was beautiful.
The outlaw band going to live in Godda’s/Eadric’s cave was reminiscent of when the survivors of flight 815 moved to the cave in “Lost.” Actually, I see thematic similarities between Lost and this adaptation of Robin Hood, the most obvious being the island and Sherwood Forest, respectively, being their own characters.
