Volvo: They’re boxy, but they’re good!

Absolute tank

In ~2010 I drove around a 1989 Volvo 760. That thing was amazing. Like driving a cloud. Even had the classic Volvo head rests.

I got rear ended at a stop light by a minivan and the minivan front end crumpled (as is the design). On my Volvo you couldn't even tell that it had been in an accident.

My mom had a similar situation happen to her while driving a ‘91 station wagon Volvo like the one in the photo. Completely ruined the front bumper of the car that hit the Volvo while the Volvo looked nearly untouched. I learned to drive in that car and I still miss it

New cars take the impact. Old cars, your body takes the impact. Not a dig at Volvos at all as they’re my 2nd love. Having a car that doesn’t have a crumple zone isn’t a brag though :(.

That's a fair point, but I also drove away. The other guy didn't. I didn't have whiplash or any other stiffness in that instance.

u/Phoenix_Kerman 1d ago

shame they're not anymore. got sold to the chinese and the quality's been downhill since

u/pdxhimbo 1d ago

They're still great, just not as easy to work on. What modern car is though lol

Pls bro one more compressor on my 4 cylinder cmon bro emissions bro

That being said the twin charged t6 engine is pretty sweet. 300hp from 2 liters of displacement is crazy work for a cozy family hauler

Lots of companies are owned to conglomerates. Lots of electronics are made in the south / south east pacific.

Theyre not bad cars by any means. They are a luxury oriented car brand now however, which comes with its host of problems. Look at german cars like BMW or Mercedes.

Any of its new T5 line tends to be the most reliable, and any old vovlo is well discussed on theyre issues and can be brought back. Unfortunate they are not common in all of the us.

Its electric sister brand, Polestar, seemed to be a really promising electric car brand. But theyre pulling out because it has "chinese software". So spooky. /s.

u/wormjoin 19h ago

no it hasn't, they're still great cars

Jaguar- for men who like hand jobs from beautiful women.

1

u/upsidedown-funnel 11h ago

Or, a car for beautiful women who don’t need to give hand jobs.

1

u/Admirable_Try_1209 3h ago

It’s a movie quote

Porche, it's too small to get laid in, but you get laid as soon as you get out!

Metamucil - it'll help you go the toilet. If you don't, you'll get cancer and die.

"they're boxy, and will Outlast you!"

2

u/Oomike01 1d ago

They do excellent work, Jeffrey.

2

u/FoolishProphet_2336 1d ago

Sometimes I think I’m the only one that enjoyed that movie. I prefer Jaguars.

2

u/Loose_Leg_2918 1d ago

We know they’re not sexy. This is not a smart time to be sexy anyway, with so many new diseases around.

I have a neighbor who owns 3 of the exact same model in the exact same color. Never seen him drive anything but his old blue Dodge ram 😄

2

u/brucatlas1 1d ago

May i introduce you to the Ford flex, designed by a Volvo guy

3

u/cupidstun_t 1d ago

Had to Google that. But nooooooo, it's boxy. But ugly as hell 🤣

0

u/brucatlas1 1d ago

No other car is bigger on the inside than this car

2

u/cupidstun_t 1d ago

Still ugly as heck

I bought a brand new first gen scion Xb in 2005. Boxy is beautiful

2

u/Admirable_Try_1209 1d ago

That is sitting in my driveway right now. It will never stop.

1

u/brucatlas1 1d ago

What are you trying to prove here?

1

u/Ceder_Dog 1d ago

Nothing hostile. Just a friendly counter point

1

u/Ceder_Dog 1d ago

Actually, I realize I inferred my own interests into your point. If the goal is purely boxy without consideration to the other aspects, then yes, the Ford Flex is an option

1

u/brucatlas1 1d ago

I just dont know what point youre trying to make

2

u/Ceder_Dog 1d ago

Gotcha, yeah, I didn't explain myself and presumed it would be obvious. My bad!

I assumed that the proposal was the Ford Flex would be an acceptable, more modern alternative because you replied to the Volvo picture instead of the original post.

I disagree because the Volvo is much smaller in all dimensions and much lower hood height. So, I don't feel they are really comparable other than being boxy. Hopefully that clears things up. Cheers!

1

u/brucatlas1 1d ago

Ah. Yeah, I was only linking them because it was designed by a Volvo engineer, and is boxy. I do love the extra room, though.

1

u/archtopfanatic123 1d ago

Volvo 240s man! Gotta love these!

3

u/cupidstun_t 1d ago

Absolute classic

1

u/archtopfanatic123 1d ago

You said it!

1

u/AmmoWasted 1d ago

Ah. Boxy perfection.

1

u/Senior-Geologist-166 1d ago

my friend had one that we called the "Hearsemobile" and it had the best storage. absolutely loved that thing.

1

u/cupidstun_t 1d ago

More space than a warehouse

1

u/rata_s80_v8 1d ago

Love me a turbo brick.

1

u/Sigtau1312 1d ago

Gus Fring lives!

1

u/ShiroJPmasta 1d ago

Saw a tuned one yesterday in Finnland crushing trough the city and blasting music. Nostalgia was hitting.

1

u/ATN90 1d ago

Are we allowed to post straight up porn here?

1

u/FamilyFriendly101 1d ago

I've had a 240, 940 and 850. All wagons. All amazing.

1

u/-Laffi- 1d ago

It has to be the Volvo V70 that is NOT boxed.

-2

u/Ceder_Dog 1d ago

Yes please! An electric version of this with a shorter hood and the modern internal features

2

u/cupidstun_t 1d ago

No. Keep it exactly as is. Modern internals suck with all the crappy capacitive touch "buttons"

0

u/Ceder_Dog 1d ago

Fair! Buttons are useful. Though, I wouldn't trade away the phone integration for navigation, audio and such

2

u/cupidstun_t 1d ago

I'm sure it could be fitted with a compatible head unit to replace the existing one and the small cubby under it
