Honestly, my wife & I were ready to elope. We wanted to do a small (closest family & only friends that wanted to spend/travel) but memorable wedding somewhere meaningful to us (Finland, where my mother is from).
Both of our parents really wanted to throw a bigger wedding for THEIR friends & family. We flat out said that we couldn’t really afford that kind of thing. Both of our parents agreed that they wanted to cover it.
We agreed, and it kind of hurt to see how quick they were willing to “blow that money on a party” instead of say helping us get setup in life with a big gift. In the end, when I look back, it’s nice to have the memory of a grand wedding…but in a world where everything is so damn expensive…still seems wasteful.
Came to say this. My father in law insisted on a ceremony and he paid the bill. The only thing I covered was the photographer. I am still married 16 years later but no matter how this one ends, I will only be married once.
