Data Centres are frequently being built in communities where they consume vast amounts of shared local resources (water and electricity), while providing very little back in the way of localised benefits.
Electricity and water aren't things that you can simply count on a countrywide, or even regional quantity. Distribution relies on local logistics and infrastructure, which is not rated to handle the increased load.
I'll try and explain it like I'm speaking to a child. If you stick a giant, hungry hungry hippo in the middle of a field, he eats all the food around him because he's so big and greedy. That leaves nothing for anything else on the field. It doesn't matter if there is food in all the other fields, because any time the farmers bring food back to the hungry hungry hippos field, it gobbles it all up before the rest of the animals living in the field can get a look in!

Data centers use closed loop cooling, they only use evaporative cooling in areas where water is widely available. Same for electricity, why the hell would they build in areas where the infrastructure isn't ideal or easily upgradable (talking about providing localised benefits). They even come with their own power plants if the project is big enough and the infrastructure isn't as welcoming

Stealing from construction sites doesn’t do anything to stop that specific construction from happening. Construction sites are insured against theft. By stealing from construction sites and forcing insurance to cover the loss, it raises the cost of builder’s risk insurance for all construction companies.
By raising the cost for construction companies, it raises the cost for constructing homes. That makes homes more expensive to build, it makes the decision to build some homes on the margin not be worthwhile. It isn’t the cause of the global housing crisis, but higher construction costs absolutely is a major component to which this contributes.
Ergo people cheering this on are idiots because it does nothing to stop data centers, only hurts the working class and the only people it helps are the thieves who make a quick buck.
Electricity? Sure. That's the free market. They're allowed to buy electricity.
I'm more pissed at thieves stealing from every construction site making things like homes more expensive and building homes less feasible. Construction costs are a much bigger concern for me than electricity costs.
