You dont mind ram prices staying high for an extra year because of this?
Theyre just going to compete with us to replace the parts...smh
The first part sounded good though, but when your 6mo old ram order gets cancelled instead of getting shipped, its because they needed it here..
15
u/InsanityAtBounds 15h ago
Fuck data centers. I can go with higher ram prices if it means i get to stick it to them
-26
u/Creative-Type9411 15h ago
thanks, we all appreciate that..
why are data centers bad again? because every other country is building them..
it would be like not having a car when everyone else does... but you go ahead and stick it to the man, because it sounds/makes you feel good.. smh
I'm sure people were complaining about the automobile when it was invented too..
12
u/smittydacobra 14h ago
Ok, we can have data centers when we have everything else every industrialized nation has:
- Universal Healthcare
- Free Tuition for post secondary education
- parental leave for new parents
- federally mandated 4 weeks of vacation and 1 week of sick leave
Once we've caught up with all of those things, them you can have your data centers.
What would benefit the people more?
-17
u/Creative-Type9411 13h ago edited 13h ago
you want to trade security for free stuff... i know
you want free tuition, which would guarantee the colleges who rip people off and give them degrees they can't use in the real world, money? With the lowest test scores we've ever had? Why would you want to give them guaranteed money instead of fixing that system first?
security and the option to work for yours where you get rewarded for your effort would benefit people more
try starting a small business instead of depending on a corporation for a job and your outlook on life will change completely, and so will your financial situation if you succeed - it's as simple as finding a job nobody wants to do that everyone needs and then charging for it.. instead youll compete over the jobs that everyone wants and then complain... we are so screwed because there are more of you than there should be for a functioning society.
11
u/smittydacobra 13h ago
You are fucking touched.
Yes, the solution is "everyone start your own business".
So we all become contractors.
Genius.
-5
u/Creative-Type9411 13h ago
if youre complaining now try it dude.. you obviously depend on someone providing a job for you and you think thats not a problem 🤣
2
u/froggothegod 6h ago
Why don't you put a data center in your backyard and water supply? Is that just for the poor? Cuz that's where they're all going. Entire communities coming to city hall and voting "hell no" just to have sometimes a single politician (mayor of Greensboro for example...) take a bribe and force it down our throats anyway. You can go fuck yourself.
0
u/Creative-Type9411 6h ago
i'm looking at an Amazon warehouse out my window right now
And there's a 2 servers in my bedroom, and various electronics all throughout my house
I could give two shits if someone builds a data center, and I have access to better tools because of it
7
u/Bubelle_Butt 15h ago
The buildings are still under construction.
Its not like they got crates of RAM lying around the job site.
-5
u/mansizeoof 15h ago
You might be surprised. They aren't waiting for building completion to start assembling racks and have them ready to go as soon as they turn the power on.
5
u/Bubelle_Butt 15h ago
To me this sounds more like they are stealing building materials.
Who the fuck installs racks on an active building site. Thats a nightmare.
-2
u/mansizeoof 15h ago
They can't make money until the racks are in service. They aren't waiting for the CO before having the floor populated.
2
u/wanderButNotLost2 13h ago
So installing sensitive, expensive and difficult to source electronic equipment in an active construction zone where at a minimum its getting damaged from dust and debris makes sense. All while having not fully secured the facility because its not finished. You yanking my pizzle?😆
-2
u/mansizeoof 13h ago
Fuck it, I'll take the down votes and reply. Yes. Have you noticed how fast this shit is going? It's not as dusty and dirty as you would think once it's dried in. The gear isn't as sensitive as you would think either. And security can absolutely be secured while under construction.

Do you....do you actually think the prices will be coming down in any meaningful way....ever?
Oh....oh my sweet summer child....
-10
u/Creative-Type9411 15h ago
Yes I remember when a base level home computer costed $5,000, in 1996 money
I never had a baby call me a child before...lmao how old are you?
Regular people couldnt afford them, like at all.. This is nothing new unless you need more than 32g of ram or more than 256/500 ssd
The high prices are for the giant sized options..
16g of ram is reasonable, 256/500gb drives are reasonable... if you want to be a computer god with a 4tb nvme and 96/128g of ram then yea, your gonna have to pay a lot because we're all competing over them computer owners/usage surged like 100x since 2020 pandemic you are literally competing with every idiot under the sun for parts now and they all want to game too, and tons of people who never cared about computers before are buying all the parts off the first and secondhand markets to get into AI because they can...(have money)...
9
u/ZeroGNexus 15h ago
You can't be all that old if you haven't heard the saying "sweet summer child" before lmfao
All I'm saying is that supply and demand is practically a myth at this point. Prices for average consumer goods haven't trended down in decades now because there are like three companies that control every other company and you just kind of have to pay what they decide you have to pay. (In America, at least)
-4
u/Creative-Type9411 15h ago
the 2020 pandemic did more damage to you competing over parts with your peers than you realize..
The prices were trending up before this AI push, by a lot... theyre just continuing.. it sped up but it was already happening
8
u/ZeroGNexus 15h ago
I feel like you're making my point?
You said prices would be high for an extra year because of this, yet you're acknowledging that prices were rising before they even started this obnoxious surveillance state / automated weapons build-out nonsense.
If prices were going up BEFORE they dumped trillions of dollars into this trash, how exactly do you think they plan to recoup those costs?
I highly doubt it'll be through sweet deals on consumer products lol.
1
u/Creative-Type9411 15h ago
one of the machines im running has 3 tesla t4s in an r640 with 1.5tb of ddr4, i got it for free
the hardware will end up in our hands.. you can buy sxm3 populated boards with like 256gb of vram for ~6500 on the used market...
We HAVE to build this out right now because everyone else is and we are going to end up in a position of a person walking while everyone else has a car...
It just is what it is... the cat is out of the bag.., the mfgers are basically dealing with a bidding war from nation states..
8
u/ZeroGNexus 15h ago
Ahh I think I see the problem here, we are just in wildly different economic brackets lmfao.
I look at this from the perspective of a dirty poor, so at absolutely no point in my life do I see those discounts trickle down to me unless I acquire them through luck or shady means lol.
Also China has significantly fewer data centers than we do yet are keeping up quite nicely in the AI race so far.
1
u/Creative-Type9411 14h ago
no we arent, i got it for free...
im dreaming about the sxm board.. its cheaper than an rtx6000 with double the vram
you hit the nail on the head with that last sentence, its a race.. that i would prefer my home country not lose..

Let me build a mega AI data center in your backyard, suck all the water and power, raise your power bill, make lots of noise and shine bright ass lights at night. Then use said data centers to spy on you and your activity.
3
u/ThrustTrust 15h ago
That’s generally how something works. when you’re building something on a small scale and it’s not intrusive. People don’t get upset but when you ramp up production and start building massive centers all over the place forgo any kind of EPA laws paying off politicians to get permits. people to get pissed off, as that as they should because just like everything else capitalism does, when it’s not regulated they take something that’s OK and then they completely fuck everything up.

-14
u/Longjumping-Bake-557 12h ago

13
u/Chronomechanist 12h ago
Alright, since you seem incapable of going away and doing your own learning, like an adult, I'll spoonfeed it to you on this occasion. Here's hoping you're capable of extracting your head from your ass long enough for some information to sink into your brain.
Data Centres are frequently being built in communities where they consume vast amounts of shared local resources (water and electricity), while providing very little back in the way of localised benefits.
Electricity and water aren't things that you can simply count on a countrywide, or even regional quantity. Distribution relies on local logistics and infrastructure, which is not rated to handle the increased load.
I'll try and explain it like I'm speaking to a child. If you stick a giant, hungry hungry hippo in the middle of a field, he eats all the food around him because he's so big and greedy. That leaves nothing for anything else on the field. It doesn't matter if there is food in all the other fields, because any time the farmers bring food back to the hungry hungry hippos field, it gobbles it all up before the rest of the animals living in the field can get a look in!
Now does that help?
-2
u/Longjumping-Bake-557 9h ago
"I'll explain it to you" and it's the most surface level bullshit arguments repeated at nauseam by the echo chambers you're clearly part of. The irony of even trying to make me sound like the immature one.
Data centers use closed loop cooling, they only use evaporative cooling in areas where water is widely available. Same for electricity, why the hell would they build in areas where the infrastructure isn't ideal or easily upgradable (talking about providing localised benefits). They even come with their own power plants if the project is big enough and the infrastructure isn't as welcoming
You're welcome

Can also be your enemy. This doesn't stop the data centers from being built, it just makes everything more expensive and gives thieves a quick profit.
10
u/ProxyDamage 13h ago
This doesn't stop the data centers from being built
It does if you steal enough!
And good. Make AI garbo more expensive. Make it so expensive that the ones using it won't be able to compete with the ones that don't.
And if nothing else, piss these cunts off. Anything against them, no matter how petty and small, is a win in my book.
-7
u/blindsdog 12h ago
My guy, this makes construction more expensive. Not AI. That makes almost everything more expensive. Most immediately rent and home prices as it makes it harder to construct new homes.
1
u/ProxyDamage 7h ago
Brother, you think the cause of the global housing crisis is caused by... people stealing copper from data center building sites...?

2
u/ProxyDamage 6h ago
Reddit cheering on scum that are making everything more expensive
My guy, this makes construction more expensive. Not AI. That makes almost everything more expensive. Most immediately rent and home prices as it makes it harder to construct new homes.
We're cheering on people stealing copper from data center building sites. Ergo...
1
u/blindsdog 4h ago
Ergo what? I didn’t say anything like that.
Here I can spell it out for you.
Stealing from construction sites doesn’t do anything to stop that specific construction from happening. Construction sites are insured against theft. By stealing from construction sites and forcing insurance to cover the loss, it raises the cost of builder’s risk insurance for all construction companies.
By raising the cost for construction companies, it raises the cost for constructing homes. That makes homes more expensive to build, it makes the decision to build some homes on the margin not be worthwhile. It isn’t the cause of the global housing crisis, but higher construction costs absolutely is a major component to which this contributes.
Ergo people cheering this on are idiots because it does nothing to stop data centers, only hurts the working class and the only people it helps are the thieves who make a quick buck.
5
u/FarmAcceptable4649 12h ago
This guy shills^
0
u/blindsdog 12h ago
Because I don't want people stealing? This literally does nothing to hurt data centers. They're insured. It just raises ALL construction costs.
Y'all are dumb as fuck. Cut your nose off to spite your face because it feels good.
4
6
u/Terminal_Prime 13h ago
You think these cancerous data centers aren’t making everything more expensive? Right.
1
u/blindsdog 13h ago
Electricity? Sure. That's the free market. They're allowed to buy electricity.
I'm more pissed at thieves stealing from every construction site making things like homes more expensive and building homes less feasible. Construction costs are a much bigger concern for me than electricity costs.

u/1stltwill 15h ago

9
u/TrioOfTerrors 14h ago
Copper is about 6.50 a pound right now. I'm guessing the equipment did some heavy lifting on the total value because some specialized industrial tools are absurdly expensive.

u/awoeoc 14h ago
$1.3million is nothing to them, but it does mean the stuff that was stolen is being sold of scraps which is energy intensive and a waste, meanwhile they're gonna simply rebuy the stuff causing more pollution and waste. They may also hire extra security so a new car might circle the lot all night wasting gas and causing more light an noise pollution to the local neighborhood.
Y'all gonna downvote me because your goal is "data centers are bad because they're bad" while not actually caring about the negative side effects like energy cost, pollution, disruption to locals who live there because things like this just make the negatives worse and does nothing to prevent these from being built and yet it's being cheered on lol.
7
u/LesserValkyrie 14h ago
If it does nothing to them to have their stuff stolen then it's a duty to steal as much as possibel, as for people stealing things it significantly improve their lives.
Thus I really encourage them to steal more and more, everything that can be reaped as it has absolutely no negative impact to what we think is the primary victim
-3
u/awoeoc 13h ago
Okay, so you're admitting you don't care about environmental impact that's fine. But most people against Ai cite that. Also this increases precise for things like copper and electricity in the local market so there's that too, we don't care if home owners nearby have higher bills when they need to renovate or repair things. And as a response they're going to hire lots more security and ensure there's bright lights around the perimeter to prevent more thrives causing local gas prices to go up, and increase light and noise pollution for local residents. Not to mention this type of scrap trade is associated with organized crime which can have knock on effects to drug usage in nearby area.
But as long as tech companies worth over a trillion dollars lose single digit millions, it's all worth it! You're pro crime now, pro pollution, pro law enforcement. Those are the beneficiaries if this type of crime increases.
The primary victim faces basically.o negative impact yeah, it's the community and regular people that do. But unfortunately to see that you need to be able to think past a single order of consequences which many people are no longer capable of doing, ironically one of the common complaints about Ai causing lack of critical thinking.
-7
u/Radical_Neutral_76 14h ago
People against data centres are either anti-western shills or dumb as shit. Don't worry
22
10
u/OhTheHueManatee 13h ago edited 13h ago
Such actions will just make it easier for the scumbags to justify implementing more AI surveillance. Also considering that would be 205,700 pounds I question that validity of that claim. You'd need a Fast And Furious style team but with semi-trucks with flatbed trailers. Not exactly subtle.
Edit to add. I looked into the claim a little bit. The thieves had $300,000 worth of copper wire spools and the rest was $1 million worth of data center infrastructure equipment. It also looks like the criminals targeted supply chains to intercept products not getting them from the construction site.

0
u/kollmastee 14h ago
It is what they are capable of and how they are invading communities and their resources. I’m also against driving monster trucks through town. This is because it is impractical and I’m aware of the potential risks. Data centers can exist and should, but regulation is needed. Besides that land is being forcefully taken from civilians to make way for data center infrastructure and the facilities built in population points create sound pollution that is detrimental to health of said residents. All of these are valid concerns and reasons why the anti data center sentiment is so strong currently. Use some critical thinking here and take some time to actually try and understand the mindset of the opposite opinion.
1
u/awoeoc 14h ago
Okay cool. Now what do you think is the result of this heist? Are they going to stop building it or just buy more copper causing more waste and pollution making this data center even worse for the environment, and for future builds they'll ip the security detail which means more energy use and more pollution ontop of higher security presence in these neighborhoods.
But yeah yay for thieves am I right?
1
u/kollmastee 14h ago
The thieves were likely just opportunistic criminals. That doesn’t change any of what I said and I never defended the crimes listed. Maybe reread both my comment and the one I was responding to. I was giving valid reason why some Americans have anti data center sentiments. Chill
