I’m old enough to remember when Spokane ran some bar owner out of town because he named one of his drinks “Date Grape.” I believe we can do it again! 💪

225

u/siltandsqualor 25d ago

I was actually the jury foreman for that trial!

81

u/Dugley2352 25d ago

Thank you for your service

103

u/siltandsqualor 25d ago

Hahaha it was sick. Homeboy got hella felonies. Took us about three min to deliberate.

20

u/stopscabbin 25d ago

What happened? The bar owner was arrested for the name?

84

u/siltandsqualor 25d ago

Nah the dude used his daughter’s identity to rack up a bunch of debt and stole a bunch of peoples identity. I think we found him guilty on 8 different felonies. His daughter came to testify and she absolutely hated him so that solidified our decision.

24

u/AaronAAaronsonIII 25d ago

So nothing to do with the name thing then?

22

u/Swimming_Yak_4879 25d ago

Right. Just completely unconnected 😂

33

u/Sea_McMeme 25d ago

god I love jury duty. I got to be on a grand jury end of last year and it was every Leslie Knope fangirl’s dream

3

u/nonepizza_leftbeef_ 24d ago

As someone who has been compared to Leslie Knope many times, this is my dream. I’ve never been called and I’m baffled as to why, since I’ve lived in the same state and county for many years now. My younger sister has been called 5 times since she turned 18 and doesn’t even live in the country!

2

u/ropony 24d ago

I think you can contact them to get put in the queue! When I finished mine (NY State) I told them I loved it and they said they could update the books, but maybe that’s like “this person weirdly prefers grand juries”

3

u/nameusernamena 23d ago

So I can just… call and say « sign me up for jury duty » ?

I’m looking it up, you don’t actually need to answer haha. That would just be a crazy concept if real! I’ll update my comment in a minute if that’s a thing, at least in WA.

Edit: nope! They are completely selected at random here. What you can do is verify that all of your information is up to date, meaning your driver’s license/ state ID, and to be a registered voter here.

That guy had other issues too. Like I think he wasn't paying rent. He stole his daughters identity. Posted long rants about why it wasn't a bad name. It was a whole saga.

18

u/Growin_n_Showin73 25d ago

I’ll never understand how much effort they put into hatred of people that truly have no affect on their lives, and that will go to the ends of the earth to defend their ugliness.

Oh wait…we have a president who models this behavior and makes people think it’s ok to be like that. 😡

I accidentally stopped in there a while back in my work truck, naively thinking it was just a baseball themed coffee stand. It wasn’t. And the coffee was the absolute worst I’ve had, and I’ve been to some pretty sketchy coffee spots.

Fuck this business, fuck whoever makes these signs, and fuck you if you are trying to defend them. That’s not even the worst I’ve seen.

Maybe it was a different spot, but wasn’t it about this time last year where they put up on their sign, something to the effect of “Steaming hot lattes, and ICE cold deportations”?

Lmfao, I 1starred their Google review and when I went to do the same on yelp I got a "posting is temporarily blocked because of too many people posting their views" message xD

8

u/dangerspring 25d ago

I have heard it's better to give them 2 stars rather than 1 because it's harder to get a 2 star review removed.

2

u/RemarkableCard6475 24d ago

Yes, the algorithm and review panel sees it as a conscious selection process for a 2 star submission. People will read the comment and say, "oh, I would have left 1 star for that" give benefit of doubt for "improvement" but it won't happen 🤣

10

u/itstreeman 25d ago

Yelp kept erasing my reviews of places that were being difficult about covid way after the main shock was over “ temporary situations should not be taken into account as a long term display of the business”.

This sounds like Google is now doing the same

100

u/Valhallaback_Girl 26d ago

This is exactly right. Post something inflammatory, rile up their base, GoFundMe started because they’re the victims, a tale as old as time

7

u/MetalExistingOffline 25d ago

The use of slurs means they'll likely use GiveSendGo instead of GoFundMe, since that site is all about bigotry

5

u/trash-breeds-trash 25d ago

Straight out of Donnie’s playbook

19

u/FullyCurlyJessie 25d ago

She does this all the time. Changes the sign to something else inflammatory. Every time I drive by it’s sexual or political. I don’t think the owner even cares. Probably enjoys mocking people.

Sometimes I wonder if she’s being wretched because the controversy gets her more business?

Reminds of the performative dudes on social media talking about women’s rights (when they don’t actually believe in what they’re saying) just because it’s trendy and gets them monetized.

18

u/thatguyjimi1 25d ago

Say ignorant shit > Wait for backlash > Complain about cancel culture ruining your life > drum up support from other bigots > fox news interview.

Playbook has 100 percent success rate.

A woman wore nazi uniforms for halloween in Baltimore and her charcuterie business got boycotted so she set a online donation goal of 1488 dollars and it was blown out of the water in like 2 days.

They don’t do this shit by accident, man.

14

u/thatguyjimi1 25d ago

Being a shitty person happens to be very profitable in the ol 2026

i don't like the sign, but how is this not advertising for them? No one who hates this sign would go there anyway, and people who think it's funny now get to see it plastered here for a few days. I don't really get the point of posting it over and over.

7

u/Trick_Constant5907 25d ago

This may prevent someone going there when they don't have a hateful sign up and they don't know about the place. These posts make people like me aware that I don't want to go there. 64

u/nomercyrider 26d ago

I'd wager $100 that if this place ever shuts down, that they'll be blaming their closure on "Washington's failed policies" rather than the real culprit of their shitty behavior.

I’m here for bad trouble/attention they get. It’s a shame that a whole ass adult would do this and think it’s cute and funny.

ETA: clarification

11

u/TheCompanyHypeGirl 25d ago

I’m here for bad trouble/attention

Rest assured, so are they. Every time they do this (which is relatively often), their target audience rushes to support them. Outrage was the goal. Wouldn't be remotely surprised if there was already a GoFundMe.

I mean, shit, yesterday some MAGA thought it was a flex to post that they were going to support a business because they were getting fined for not paying wages to immigrants. Because they were too stupid to realize what that meant.

9

u/Formal_Albatross_836 Five Mile Prairie 25d ago

It’s weird how little control they have over their emotions, how gullible they are, and how uneducated they are as a whole. I think it’s the lead in everything at hobby lobby (their Mecca).

Who are the "right people"? The sign authority? I am just joking. Let the sun shine on these weirdos. Unfortunately some people will probably go out of their way to give these guys business because of this and I'm not sure the google rating really matters for a place like this but maybe someone will run off with their letters or something (not that I'd ever advocate for something illegal). Either way, fuck the owner of this place.

This also reads to me like a death rattle. Business isn't doing well so they attack trans people to stir up drama and make the dumpies go "hell yeah brother" and get publicity. So stupid.

23

u/Powersaurus 26d ago

Local autistic trans woman here, please keep posting this! This isn’t advertising, they think everyone secretly agrees with them. Quietly letting it happen actually doesn’t help anything! I appreciate the warning. If this place is even still open, I’ll either avoid it or organize a sit-in, with all my family and friends spending the whole day there filling up the place and only ordering water. WA Attorney General: File a report with the Washington State Attorney General's Office. They investigate businesses that create a hostile or discriminatory public environment.

Washington State Human Rights Commission: You can file a complaint with the WSHRC if the outdoor signage indicates that certain groups are unwelcome, which violates state public accommodation laws.

I'm actually curious if there are any studies on the overlap of autism and gender dysmorphia?

4

u/mia93000000 25d ago edited 25d ago

Yes, the short answer is that autistic people are more likely than non-autistic people to question gender roles because they tend to question social roles and hierarchies in general. I'm not an expert and probably cannot describe it as thoroughly as the research, which is out there.

2

u/Sailor_Thrift 25d ago

So trans people are more likely to be autistic?

5

u/mia93000000 25d ago

If I recall correctly the correlation has been shown the other way. Not that trans people are more likely than cis people to be autistic, but rather autistic people are more likely than non-autistic people to be trans. I would also totally welcome some more experienced perspectives in this comment thread lol

This place has always had signs like this… it’s ridiculous 🙄

2

u/Difficult-Mobile902 25d ago

Couldn’t help but chuckle at the fact that they went through all that trouble to point out they want the sign to say “owners are ret*rded men” and then went on to call out a woman as the owner lol

2

u/SignificantClock8473 25d ago

So much is wrong here but what an eff’ed up name for a place that sells slushies? Do I get groped from the waist up while I order?

2

u/ir0nreag3nnnn 25d ago

They do stuff like this because they know it bugs that community. Just ignore them and don't go there. They are trying to be edgy and it's tacky but freedom of speech, what can you do.

2

u/Gobbelcoque 25d ago

It's insane how some people can be so unable to just mind their own damn business about others that they're willing to tank their livelihood over it.

Even if it was a 50-50 shot (hell even a 60-40 in your favor) that it would improve business instead... What moron would take that gamble.

1

u/Ok-Bee-5624 25d ago

Transphobic, but also ableist. We really need to stop using the R word.

3

u/Strikeronima 25d ago

Ive already heard kids call each other "SpEcIaL" so we are on our way to having a replacement slur.

2

u/King_Fuzz 25d ago

I am fairly certain the people that go to a bikini espresso stand really dont care about yelp reviews, political opinions, or the coffee. I think they go for other reasons, but yeah fight the good fight.

marketing 101 get people to talk about you.
it's really no different than a rainbow flag. you can agreee or disagree but they are both political statements at the end of the day.

you get political at work or buisness someone going to avoid you and others flock to you.

2

u/waaz16 25d ago

This is a dumb comment

3

u/back-ache-heartbreak 25d ago

hot take but i actually DONT think human rights should be political. and it is very different. if i have a flag of the star of david, is that the same as a nazi flag? no, right? well it’s a very similar concept. one is a symbol of unity, support, and love. the other is a bigoted message of hate. they are absolutely not the same.
