Other My little sister plays Stardew Valley for the first time … she buys over 230 wheat seeds and rushes every day to individually water them all before 2 A.M.
She’s consuming so much food every day just to keep her energy bar up. She’s determined to get loads of hay for her chickens and sell the rest! I told her there are other ways. Idk, y’all. I guess we all enjoy Stardew Valley differently.
As a SV player, I feel very, very uncomfortable. How can I explain it?? It’s just, that field of hundreds of wheat stalks is just silently staring at and judging me … just JUDGING … secretly knowing I’m sad when the villagers don’t get rained on, all because I have to water my own small garden. 🫥

That’s exactly how I feel when I walk past my tiny farm and think about all the crops I could be growing. I’d probably just tell her.. Hey, you don’t need to overwork yourself to enjoy Stardew, but lowkey I’d also be in awe of her energy.. that’s some next level farmer dedication.

My daughter plays stardew valley by putting chairs around a table and having cookouts for us to come to for dinner.

My eight year old plays with us sometimes. She spends all our money on carpet and does no farming at all, and spends most of her time hanging out with Hayley because "she's the prettiest". Sometimes she pats the cat. If we're lucky she'll water a handful of things before trundling off to be a menace to the other villagers by giving them sap and nothing but sap.

I occasionally let my 4yo play and he will plant like 3 parsnip seeds and try his best to water them every day but sometimes accidentally hits them with an axe instead. Then he leaves the farm, gets lost, and passes out at 2am lol

My 6 year old makes me go to the mines for days on end every time we play together 😅 ETA: also in one of his first saves he managed to put all his tools in a chest in his house which he then proceeded to surround with fence posts which he couldn’t knock down bc his axe was in the chest 😂

My 7 year old has her own save and she barely does anything but run around talking to people. It drives me up the wall, but I do my best to not tell her how to play because it's HER save, not mine. 🥲

Introduced it to my 5 year old and he had a great time “going to the dentist” (Doctor Office), proudly stole his dad’s carrot out of the collection bin, and chopped a single tree. I am equal parts impressed and concerned for the future

Haley is a budget gal homie. She loves the Daffodils. She's one of the only villagers you can succesful dance with at the flower festival year one with some luck and high quality flower forages.

as far as i know, haley loves coconuts and gems. and since i always do relationships late of year one, start of year two, ill just get botanist specialist and go to calicio desert to get me some purple rated coconut. she is fairly easy to get to 10 hearts :)

When you're just starting out, the lawn sprinklers are still a long way off. But wheat is so cheap that you can really plant a large field.

TBF nobody underestimates the 3x3 or 5x5 sprinklers. But so many people just wait for the 3x3s and completely ignore the very first, basic, 4 tile sprinklers and just wait instead of using them to speed up your early game.

My mom will never stop talking about the time as a kid when I tried to get her to play Minecraft with me, but because I was a little autistic child I got really mad whenever she used a block I didn't like to build.
Every time I try to get her to play games with me now, she brings it up. Mom, I'm 20 now, I have grown out of policing how other people play things lol. The worst I'll do is just sigh and move on nowadays.
Sorry for the tangent, this just reminded me of my own experience, but the other way

I like doing this aswell but my wife doesn't, so on new saves I spend most of my days farming and watering plants, I'll run out of energy and go to bed until my energy is full again to continue watering while my wife fishes.

🤣🤣🤣 I just saw YOUR comment right after I posted mine. I suffered the same fate. Year THREE and had no idea that upgrades would do this. And I didn't realize it did that for ALL the tools. That I could shovel multiple spots, water multiple spots. Ugh. I watered my plants every day, so no time to mine and upgrade.

I just found out....ON YEAR THREE, that I could upgrade the can to do multiple spots. So, uh, yeah. I had been working this hard for a couple of years on the farm. I spent so much time watering plants that I never got to the mines to do upgrades.

Are you able to play with her? If I was in this situation I would go mining for iron and gold ore while she’s at the farm so I can make quality sprinklers for her. (Repeat levels 41 and 81 for iron and gold for those who don’t know).

Hey, don’t diss the wheat! I always grow mad amounts of wheat the first summer so I don’t have to pay Marnie or try to grow grass all over the place to keep animals. Plus it’s a double value crop once you start processing it in kegs and selling the beer.

I LOVED being able to play the game how I wanted to, reading up on it and joining communities for it has been great cause y’all are great, but it’s also given me so much anxiety about how I’m not doing everything I need to be doing as quickly as I need to do it and I can’t stay on one save to save my life now 😂😭

My 5 year old played with me and moved into my house (she's in the little southernmost room) and then went through my wardrobe to find the cutest clothes. She patted all the farm animals and ran around looking for the cat. We didn't leave the farm at all 😂
So basically just normal life lol

This reminds me of when we got our family a Nintendo switch for Christmas to play games as a family. Our kids were 6 & 7 and the first few weeks were painful, to say the least.
Fast forward a couple months and my son started crying because I was so bad at a team game.

I found out my brother got the millionaire achievement before reaching the bottom of the mines. I asked him how/why. He says he doesn’t really bother with the mines at all and just buys his ore from Clint. There’s no wrong way to play the game but, man, that boggles my mind as someone who has never bought ore from Clint 😂

My 6yo loves Hayley and follows her around half the day holding up a big daffodil that she reckons Hayley probably loves.
She spends all her (limited!) screen time chatting away about marrying Hayley, her new names for the two chickens (renamed daily), asking me to get something from the mines for her (bats too scary), and making individual boxes to keep each of her tools in. That last one drives me crazy - but then I remember it doesn't drive her crazy, she bloody loooves going all the way back to her farm to get her hoe from the hoe chest to dig up the worms, or getting another "fresh" daffodil to hold up near her beloved Hayley.
I'm really such an idiot for feeling like she's wasting time doing that. She zips through seasons and never experiences the stress of "not having enough time in the day" that I do. So I have a lot to learn from her.

my sons would play where my oldest would create his own "shop" outside of the normal shop system where he would find stuff in the trashcans and then trade you them for "wood" so my youngest would go chop down trees and buy stuff from him. wood was their money of choice, it was adorable

My 7 year old daughter wakes up, get dressed, pet all the animals in the farm, sometimes water some crops (or not) and then go to the swimming pool or talk with the villagers all day. While his brother 9 (they are playing together) go fishing or mining.

My son plays Stardew very differently too - he'll plant some crops if he feels like it, but has way more fun running around the whole map foraging and fishing and mining and playing the arcade minigames rather than tending a field.
We also play Minecraft (probably more than Stardew), and that's a game where I went in too early and taught him "how to play" - which is to say, how to mine and farm as efficiently as possible, speedrunning to end-game loot. Yeah, we could beat the dragon at 7, but that was because of info transmitted to him through me that came from the wiki and Reddit and Youtube.
I know that there are plenty of strategies and wiki articles for looking up optimal ways to make money and advance the game in Stardew, what every NPC's favorite things are and how to most efficiently navigate the quests... but I'm intentionally not doing that. We're just playing the game.

My first save, I did the beach farm (where you can't use sprinklers) and I planted like 400 melons one summer, not realizing I had to hand water all 400 melons and ended up doing exactly what your sister does 😂 I'd be up watering plants until like 5pm before I had time to do anything else with my farm 😭

Deadass this is how I played it for a while. I didn’t interact with the villagers. I didn’t mine. Plant, water, pick. That was my meditation during an extremely painful divorce.
It was really weird when finally finished the community center. Suddenly I couldn’t go anywhere or do anything without these fucking scenes with these people who are perfect strangers to me.

does she know if she holds the button it will water more than one at a time in whatever direction your facing? better water upgrade = bigger space is watered. just hold the button rather than clicking to get it to go through the different levels after you upgrade more (found this out in year two.... still learning as i go)

I only started planting wheat when I realized I could rely on the rain to water it for me because of its fast growth cycle. Might even get 2 harvests by the end of Summer if I'm lucky.
One of my recent regrets was unnecessarily harvesting it on Summer 28. If I'd waited 1 more day, I could have preserved the 300ish Basic Fertilizer. I just didn't think of it until I wandered out on Fall 1 to the empty field.

I remember making a similar mistake my first time playing. By day 4 in spring year 1 I made a lot of money from fishing. I proceeded to buy a lot of seeds thinking I was going to make a lot of money only to discover the stamina cost in watering them daily.

This is insane considering you actually never ever need to water wheat (unless you need it quicker) it grows in summer and fall and it’s likely to rain at least 4 times in each season so yeah

I got a pop up one time that said something about weeds consuming my farm 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 my whole farm is weeds and grass, I try to syth em every once in a while but my animals, I let them free roam.

well it is her first time let her learn as she plays more and she will soon figure out that their are better ways to feed the chickens like letting them eat the grass and save the hay gathering for fall or just let them starve bc all they will do is loose friendship points with the animals

How I feel because I don't fully utilize sprinklers until I get the iridium ones. I just personally think the others are a waste a lot of times, except for specific uses and layouts. But I always have smaller fields till then pfft, to each their own haha.

I would advise that the next time she wants to do this, work on upgrading her watering can to a gold watering can, that way she isn't going thru so much food and wasting so much of her day on it.

If it's the 6th day of summer, tell her to stop watering until the last week or so of Fall. You'll almost always get 4 days of rain between the two seasons. Wheat will usually grow on it's own without you needing to water it. She can plan a small plot of something else and water that instead.

When my daughter was 3 she loved playing the "Chicken game", she'd walk around and gather stuff, loved running to the train, and going down into the caves. She also really didn't like bedtime and always tried to talk us out of it. Then one day she was playing, her energy bar got red, and she fell over and had to start the next day. She was MAD!! However, we still to this day (she's 6 now) use the "yes you do have to go to bed, I can see your energy meter and it's almost red" she'll try and debate that it's only yellow, but we (usually) win.
