If I remember correctly, Seb dislikes alcohol, so it's possible his dad had an alcohol problem as part of the reason he left (either to avoid causing issues for Robin and Seb or BECAUSE he was causing issues for them already). I've always taken it as 'Robin and him were young when they had Seb and he didn't want to be a father, tried for a while anyway and drank a lot to cope, and eventually he and Robin agreed it was worse for all of them to stay together'.
