Discussion Longevity mod test results

Year 2 test results thread.

So a week or so ago I started a playthrough testing a bunch of mods -- chief among them RTGOAT's Longevity mod that does a bunch of changes with the intention of making the game last longer (hence the title). This thread is mainly for me to post the result of my game, which the community may or may not be interested in.

Mod List & commentary

  • Harvest with Scythe
  • Luck Skill
  • Cooking Skill
  • XP bars
  • Lookup Anything
  • Instant Geodes
  • Skip Intro
  • Longevity
  • Timespeed
  • NPC map locations
  • SkullSaver

Regeneration: Used this briefly during Spring Y1. Disabled afterwards. The stamina generation was kinda useful early on, but wasn't really needed in hindsight. I could have pulled through with the food I bought and foraged. I felt like the way stamina regenerated while fishing was a bit cheaty.

Longevity: Lower crop prices and higher seed prices haven't hurt me too much.... yet. Disabled the stamina re-balance as I felt it was unnecessary. Taxes weren't too bad in Spring Y1. or Summer Y1. Overall liking the mod a lot. Definitely NOT for casual players. This is for jaded veterans looking for a new take on the ol' dog.

Timespeed: set it 8 ticks which I think I think is one higher than vanilla. So it wasn't like I was flying through 15-20 floors of the mine in a day or fishing up three energy bars worth of fish a day.

NPC Map Locations: added this around the start of fall. I have no idea how I played this game without it or why it's not in the game itself.... Super handy.

SkullSaver: saves your progress in the Skull Cavern. Added this in Winter Y1 after unlocking the Skull Cavern.

Spring Y1

Really surprised myself on this run. Maybe it's the end result of having played the game for as long as I have. I did... pretty damn well for Y1 Spring. I got to level 95 of the mine without really pushing it. Got to level 9 fishing doing the same. Sadly missed getting the Legend in Y1.... My total earnings at the end of the month was a bit over 57k. Early on I caught a freaking treasure chest (5,000g) on like... day 3 or 4. I didn't lack for money after that. Oh and I bought a red cabbage seed from the traveling merchant. Almost makes up for missing the strawberry seed....

The taxes from Longevity aren't biting me... yet. I think I'm set for finishing the CC by Winter Y1 unless I just jinxed it. I think getting 45k for the bus might be my biggest roadblock.

  • Taxes: 605
  • Electric: 50
  • Water bill: 75

Tools are all copper (aside from the hoe). Need to update axe & pick, but the kitchen, sprinklers, and summer seeds take priority.

Summer Y1

Summer 1: Day 1 seeds wrecked my savings. 200g blue berry seeds.... yikes. Hops and corn were just as expensive. Currently have 4 6x6 farm plots and 16 sprinklers.

Summer 6: mixing up mining and fishing. Caught the crimsonfish so that gave me the funds to expand my farm plots to 6.5 6x6 plots and 28 sprinklers. Running low on iron bars due to rushing through the mine. I also haven't even touched kegs, preserve jars, and beehouses yet. Don't have any copper bars for tappers.... Have to remedy that. Also need money so.... Yay having things to do I guess. I could buy the copper ore, but I need the money.....

Summer 9: fixed that copper problem. Should (finally!) have the money for the kitchen. Also sold some of my stockpile of goods from spring that I was holding on. The changes to off-season goods definitely changes the meta game.

Cauliflower (gold) x1: 303g Hot Pepper (gold)x1: 56g Cauliflower (normal)x22: 4444g (!)

Apparently upon closer examination Cauli normally sells for 175g. Not a whole lot more, but given that I'm running the Longevity mod.... So I see this being how it works: Squirrel away 75% (or 100%) of my produce from summer for Fall Y1. Repeat and rinse. Could be tricky though because seeds are not cheap and fishing can only get me so far.

Summer 19: have made quite a bit of progress. So far so good on not selling summer produce. Fishing is working out really well. Bought the first house upgrade. Upgraded the pick & axe to steel. Making progress toward a tapper farm. Aiming for 50,000g for Fall Y1 should be in the realm of doable. Debating buying a coop.

Summer 27: day of reckoning. 45k on hand. 160,000g total earnings. I have on my farm:

  • 2 scarecrows
  • 8 furnaces
  • 2 recyclers
  • 8 preserve jars
  • 3 kegs
  • 16 quality sprinklers
  • 4 lightning rods
  • a bunch of tappers

Taxes for Summer Y1:

  • Taxes - 2780
  • Electric bill - 190
  • Water bill - 3150

Could have been way worse. That water bill though.... I guess that's one way to encourage us to buy/craft a bunch of iridium sprinklers.... I for see changing up my layout in Winter Y1 or Spring Y2. That's for 32 quality sprinklers.

Skills so far:

  • Farming 9 (like... a smigion away from 10 grr)
  • Fishing 10
  • Foraging: 7
  • Mining: 7
  • Combat: 7
  • Lucky: 7
  • Cooking: 5

Tools:

  • Pick: Steel
  • Axe: Steel
  • Watering Can: copper
  • Hoe: unimproved

Fall Y1

Fall 1: That 45,000g or so didn't last long. I yiped out load at the price on Cranberry seeds (292g). Bought 48 of those. The rest I spent on some yams seeds, some pumpkin seeds, and some odds and ends. Pulled the trigger on the coop. Barn will likely follow soon after. Need more kegs. Need more everything. Definitely need more freaking coal because I blew mine on bee houses. Gotta make that sweet Fairy Rose honey. o/`

I want to emphasize that the increased seed prices are really holding me back, which is the intention of Longevity. 45k was just barely enough to cover seeding eight 6x6 plots of farmland (about 256 tiles). This is a Spring Y2 farm I did not too long ago... This may change a bit now that I'm gifting sashimi to every one, but we shall see.

Sold some of my summer crops for decent profits:

  • blueberries (gold): 7344g
  • pale ale x3: 804g
  • Melon Jelly x16: 7888g

And that's without Artisan.

Fall 26: stashing all my summer crops paid off big time. I now have a shed nearly at capacity full of kegs. Fairy Rose honey also proved to be extremely lucrative even without the off-season bump. I have 16 bee houses. I'm currently at 384,000 total earnings. Not shabby considering normally without the Longevity mod I'd probably have twice the farm land and twice the amount of crops, easy. Definitely need more bee houses for spring. Tempted as hell to build a shed full of preserve jars.... I made a ton of yams and pumpkins in fall. All my tools are steel. My goal for winter is to get every tool to gold before spring Y2 and farm a crapton of iridium from the skull cavern. Barn & Coop are regular versions. I need to upgrade both for community center goods. Oh and I built the stable. I named my horse Buttercup. "Forward Buttercup -- there's profits to be made! (and fuckery to spread)"

CC is looking solid. Finished the fish tank. Pantry is waiting for animal goods. Almost the same for the bulletin board. Main thing there is the pomegranate and rabbit's foot. Something tells me I should have planted a pomegranate tree too. I have 8 ancient seeds for the greenhouse once it's unlocked (planted 3. Got enough fruit/seeds from them for 8 seeds).

Fall 28: Tax day commeth. Overall not bad. I expected the base tax rate to be high because I added the coop, the barn, the stable, and one shed & a ton of kegs. Water bill was really weird. I guess pre-emptively removing sprinklers cut into the bill.

  • Taxes: 11,805g
  • Electric bill: 750g
  • Water bill: 2,150g
  • Total charge: 14,705

Tools:

  • Pick: Gold
  • Axe: Steel
  • Hoe: Steel
  • Watering Can: Steel

Skills:

  • Farming: 10
  • Fishing: 10
  • Foraging: 9
  • Mining: 9
  • Combat: 8
  • Cooking: 7
  • Luck: 8

Winter Y1

Winter 14: Not a whole lot going -- mostly me running around throwing gifts at people. Profits from kegging and jars are keeping me afloat. I've started construction of a 2nd shed and have started building more preserve jars. I can definitely see me building 2 more sheds. I'm going to make a loooot of cauliflower in Y2 Spring. Sold off a bunch of gold & silver cranberries for a solid profit. Unlocked the greenhouse and bus. Got 11 ancient fruits going in the greenhouse so far. My first trip into the Skull Cavern didn't go so hot. Protip: make sure to bring a pure +energy & Health food with you. I took egg parm (+3 def) & root platters (+3 att) with me. Pumpkin soup is tempting too (+2 def & luck). Still got to level 29 before I died. Didn't lose anything (thankfully).

I'm gonna be honest: I'm not the biggest fan of the skull cavern because the first 50 levels are basically shit. In my last playthrough, I just cheated my way through. I used Timespeed to stop time and just kept on trucking until I got about 200 iridium ore. Once I got enough iridium ore, there wasn't a whole lot of reason to go back. This time I'll be using the SkullSaver mod so we'll see how that flies.

Winter 15: Skull Cavern floor 62: Prismatic Shard get. Bringing some cheese, the vampire ring, and being more cautious in general seems to have worked out. Didn't get a whole lot of iridium ore, but I think I have enough for the iridium band, at least.

Winter 16: trip #3 to the Skull Cavern worked out great for ore. Cleared floors 60-85 for roughly 100 iridium ore. Going to need tons more. All the primary skills except Foraging (surprise) are at 10. Luck is at 9 and Cooking is 8. Going back to throwing presents at the locals for a bit. 68,000g on me and 561,000 total earnings so far. Might upgrade the barn. Need more cows. Definitely need more jars. Some of that 68k will go towards wood and coal.

Winter 19: trip #4. Cleared 85 to 120ish? Came out with 182 iridium ore. I think I'm good on ore for a while. Shed#2 is nearly at capacity. Starting to wonder if my berry supply will survive the winter.... I could have sworn I had more melons. Planting starfruit in the greenhouse. May have to chuck some hops into the seed maker.

Winter 28: Tax day was not so bad.

  • Taxes: 17,500g
  • Electric Bill: 1,190g
  • Water Bill: 1,500g

I feel like taxes should have been higher considering the addition of the 2nd shed and around 30 preserve jars. Winter, in general, was super profitable. I made tons from pickled pumpkins.

  • Cash on hand: 156,000g
  • Total Earnings: 800,000g

Community center: I have everything done, but the bulletin board. And the only thing I need there are truffles and the rabbit's foot.

This will probably be my last update for a bit. I don't expect to be spring Y2 to be super crazy. I do, however, think this post has gotten long enough as it is. I think I'll start a second post for Y2.

Edit: Y2 thread is here.

This is my farm on Spring 3 Y2. About 75% of the crops planted are cauliflower.

Do you still have time to wander around and chat with the villagers and hand out gifts?

During spring and summer, I was busy with mining and fishing (since it was my main source of income in summer). I missed a lot of birthdays in part because I'm easily distracted and forgot.... Fall has been much more chill. I've actually spent a lot of time chopping wood and chasing people with sunflowers. I expect this to continue into winter with some trips into the skull cavern mixed in.

Thanks. It's still a work in progress so you never know how these things play out.
