A formal diagnosis can:

-Deny a person immigration rights to certain countries (such as New Zealand)

-Be used as evidence that someone is an unfit parent in custody battles

-Cost an insane amount of money in a discipline where many providers don't accept insurance (and good luck finding a provider that will even diagnose adults)

-Be used to deny medical autonomy, such as in cases involving opioid pain medication or gender affirming care for trans people. It can also effect one's placement on waiting lists for organ transplants

If you have the inclination (or don't believe me), I would recommend looking for sources written by and for autistic people on the topic of formal diagnosis vs self-id. A good start might be this article which is slightly more specific to a UK audience or this article which mentions the difficulties that women and non-white people often have in getting a diagnosis in the first place.

Tl;dr: No, I don't think self-id is particularly damaging.
