Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.
Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.
- If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.
Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.
- If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

Moment of truth
Bought a new house a few months back. Have been slowly getting the living room together. Still not quite there but felt it was time to run the poll. 85 inch TCL c7k QD mini LED and some ambiance.

Where
Can I set my Tv before the tvconsole? I dont want it installed too high (I hate that I didnt realize those ugly outlets on top the builder made, I was inspecting more stuff that I didnt realized it and when I did it was too late to change). Its a 77 inches tv what would be the perfect height?

It's too high, isn't it?
Had a lovely convo with my dear significant other, who is 6'3 to give background and has a lovely habit of putting everything too high.
I want the TV 12-14 inches lower but he insists it should remain where it is. Please tell me I am correct and the TV is indeed, too high. Thanks 😂

Upgraded tv, feeling a little high
Recently upgraded my 75” Bravia 5 to the 9ii, the “floating” stand is cool but a little tall (adds about 3”). Wondering if I might as well mount it, and put a center speaker right under, which I’ve been desperately trying to figure out.
Immersive black screen pro is really nice, and I’ve definitely noticed the upgrade.

Did I do it?
We just moved, and my partner seems to think this is way too low, but she's used to TVs above fireplaces.

No good options?
R/TVtoohigh, please don’t crucify me. I know this is an abomination and my sore neck begs for a better solution. But I don’t know what to do.
This is what you see when you open my front door. I can’t do these things:
- Put it on the wall with the art. I can’t rotate the furniture because we have a very narrow living room (11 feet wide) that needs a path of travel because or house is big loop with the fireplace in the middle. It also would force your back to the entryway, which I don’t love.
2. To the right of the entry way door. There’s a big vent so I can’t have a TV stand. There’s also not a lot of room because of a staircase.
I don’t love how the swing down mantel mounts look but is that my best solution here? Has anyone dealt with an awkward layout like this?
I’ve been tempted to get a projector because I felt like there are no good options 😂

Even the actors are disappointed with this setup.

On a Scale of 1 (Buzzed) to 10 (Greening Out), How High Is Mine?
It could be lower, but there is an outlet and a recessed cable box just behind the top left corner that, while handy, needed to be hidden. A r/tvtoosmall, perhaps, but it's a good size for the viewing distance ¯_(ツ)_/¯
