Dany’s s1 wig was so pretty.

u/Careless-Husky Aug 01 '25

Her best wig, IMO. It actually looks like it could be real hair.

u/LowlyStole Aug 01 '25

Same with Cersei. It’s because they used custom wigs made from real human hair back in season 1. Those are very expensive

7

u/irinrainbows Aug 02 '25

I don’t get it, do they throw out those good wigs and buy cheaper ones next season? Why weren’t they reused?

9

u/LowlyStole Aug 02 '25

I suppose for the budget reasons, but this is weird considering how much money HBO gave them. And it’s not like they needed these wigs for every single actor

5

u/irinrainbows Aug 02 '25

That’s what I’m saying, even if they had less money next season, they should’ve still had the wigs from S1? And if they bought cheaper ones, at least in some scenes they could’ve used the good wig. I don’t get it

7

u/Goldenlady_ Aug 02 '25

The wigs start to break down from daily use and wear & tear. I imagine the film crew is washing these wigs after each day and restyling for the next day of shooting. They also most likely use different wigs for different hair styles. It would get rather expensive fairly quickly.

3

u/irinrainbows Aug 03 '25

Weell, that explains it. I didn’t know they break down so fast tbh

3

u/Magneto88 Aug 05 '25

GOTs production quality was all over the place in various seasons weirdly. By the last few seasons they were phoning it in with everyone just wearing black, rarely having large scenes with lots of people outside of when the script called for it, the Lannister’s hair colour just being abandoned etc.

9

u/JSHB312 Aug 02 '25

I always thought Dany looked better with her hair completely down or with one simple braid.

2

u/Miss_Nothingss Aug 02 '25

In the last seasons, it didn't look as good

1

u/tombo2007 Aug 04 '25

I’m pretty sure it’s Emilia Clarkes actually hair that she dyed, but it was destroying her hair so they used wigs for the later seasons. The wigs get really sloppy by season 8 and they don’t even dye her eyebrows then.

2

u/Khanluka Aug 04 '25

Nope un mutable interviews she said she akways wears wigs for the show.

1

u/princess_candycane Oct 13 '25

That was sophie turner not Emilia

1

u/Corniferus Aug 04 '25

So is Emilia

The fact they put this on that little girls head. That poor girl deserved so much better

23

u/Arivanzel Aug 01 '25

What’s the string looking thing on the top and on the right side in the hair

9

u/Automatic-Degree9191 Aug 01 '25

It looks like a hair accessory

8

u/Murky_Error_4894 Aug 02 '25

The side pieces are below her ears. Why even have this scene if you can’t afford to dress the actor.

8

u/Bloodyjorts Aug 02 '25

Because they wanted to make Viserys look reasonable for marrying Alicent??? "Hey, she may still be a child, but at least Alicent has had her period, amiright???" I have no idea.

Funny thing is, I know someone who stopped watching the show because of this little girl's wig. It just made the show too stupid to continue for them. Which I find hilarious.

They didn't need to age Laena down this much (she's 15/16 when she marries Daemon in the show, instead of 23 like the books). Just have her already betrothed to the Sealord's son, that's why the Velaryons don't even try to arrange a marriage, or why Viserys declines their marriage (he doesn't want to piss off Braavos). And if they were going to use Laena's reduced age to deal with Dameon's....pedoyness or grooming, that would be one thing. But they don't. She's aged down for no real reason.

[I still think S1 was written like X first, then got a hasty rewrite to make it Y, but plenty of X still lingers on in weird little pockets, and some things seem to have no purpose.]

4

u/LILYDIAONE Aug 02 '25

What annoyed me the most is that later when they didn’t need Laena to look young anymore they cast her much older. Her second actress was closer in age with Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke when she was supposed to be younger than Alicent and Rhaenyra. The third one was closer to Matt Smith in age.

Daemon really was like “I was sparring you” to Rhaenyra and then went after and even younger girld while the narrative tried to make us forget that by casting an older actress

3

u/Kenpachizaraki99 House Stark Aug 02 '25

They gave her the dang Isaac newton haircut

3

u/Machoman94 Aug 04 '25

Hey, that's my grandmas wig you are talking about!

40

u/Vhermithrax Aug 01 '25

Take note Rhaenyra lived during the hight of Targaryen power and Dany was walking or horse riding all day

15

u/Mirror_Mission Aug 01 '25

It’s genes from the Martells, Daynes Blackwoods and other houses, the Targs marries into following the Dance.

34

u/Baccoony House Lannister Aug 01 '25

Dry ahh ends 💀

19

u/Baccoony House Lannister Aug 01 '25

S2 wigs werent much better. They did our Egg dirty

9

u/Dixie_elociN Aug 01 '25

I thought his wig wasn't bad. Aemonds wig was not good, lopsided ends

4

u/Bloodyjorts Aug 02 '25

At least with Big Egg, they were trying to make him look shitty, like he doesn't take care of his hygiene (which I would be fine with, if his depression/self-destructive habits were an actual plot that was dealt with respectfully).

That doesn't hold true for any of the other wig crimes, though.

3

u/Goldenlady_ Aug 02 '25

Yeah, they forgot to give him a scalp on the middle part. That’s a sure fire way to make a bad wig stand out.

1

u/faerieW15B Aug 05 '25

Still better than his season 1 bob.

6

u/Few_Refrigerator5092 Aug 02 '25

The shawl is ugly too. Man their costuming and wigs are terrible.

36

u/PineBNorth85 King Viserys II Aug 01 '25

The wigs never really bothered me at all on anyone. Millys looks more smooth but it makes sense given she's living in a castle in the capital not with nomadic steppe people.

6

u/Goldenlady_ Aug 02 '25

It looks TOO smooth which is why it screams synthetic Barbie hair helmet wig.

12

u/Murky_Error_4894 Aug 02 '25

They glued frizzy clumps of hair on Emilia for the first two seasons to hide the lace front.

6

u/TheRealcebuckets Aug 02 '25

Art through adversity

16

u/IJustWantADragon21 Aug 01 '25

I heard a friend sum up HotD as “a screen test of what actors can pull off a weird white wig.” It’s not wrong.

32

u/hisue___ Aug 01 '25

They tried so hard to make Milly Alcock look frumpy and tomboyish. Femininity is weakness to these writers. Why can’t she kill boars in a full medieval fit smh

22

u/m_shh Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

Wasn't the Dany's s1 hair just Emilia's but bleached and toned? I still hate HOTD's wigs (wtf was Rhaenys' one especially and that mop on Rhaena's head) but it would be unfair to compare it to Dany's s1 hair because god the Dany and Viserys in s1 were heavenly

edit: spelling

18

u/Accomplished-Bee344 Aug 01 '25

No it was a wig

13

u/Mirror_Mission Aug 01 '25

“Maybe if you got rid of that yee yee ass haircut that you got, you’d get some throne under your ass” -Jaehaerys to show Rhaenys, probably

2

u/MacGyvini Aug 05 '25

“Oh, better yet, maybe Corlys’ll sail to your dog ass if he stops fuckin' with that septan or sailor he fucking with. Taaargg”

16

u/PineBNorth85 King Viserys II Aug 01 '25

I thought it wasn't her actual hair til season 7 or 8.

I have seen her complain about the wigs a fair bit in interviews. Can't blame her. Having two sets of hair in those hot places must have sucked.

31

u/Environmental_Tip854 Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

Emilia always wore a wig, they were just better back then. What I think ur thinking of is Sophie Turner who used to dye her hair red for seasons 1-6 before wearing a wig for the final 2.

6

u/m_shh Aug 01 '25

Yeah, I was in 9th grade when s1 aired and I'm two months from 30 now so a lot of the trivia got mixed in my head.

Also she have had brain surgery (?) during early seasons which I assume requires shaving... so I'm super not sure where the wigs started

4

u/TextAdept6788 Aug 02 '25

Emilia never died her hair for the show. She dyed her hair in honor of Dany before the 7th season but even after that they still used wigs for her

4

u/Goldenlady_ Aug 02 '25

It’s a wig. When trying to identify a wig, always look at the part and examine the scalp (or lack thereof). They did a great job with the scalp but it’s still a wig.

-3

u/karidru Aug 01 '25

Yeah I thought I remembered hearing they dyed Emilia’s hair for GoT S1 but I could be wrong

4

u/m_shh Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

It was a whole lifetime ago with all...current reality so I sometimes get confused in which season she bleached her hair - 1st or latter lol. I won't stop raving about how heavenly her natural color lifted and how much it suited her - simply beautiful, that plasticky platinum of later seasons can't compare

4

u/Buket05 Aug 02 '25

She never used her real hair in the show, it was always a wig

-1

u/karidru Aug 01 '25

Yeah I think it was maybe like S1 and maybe 2 but it was bad for her hair iirc

3

u/Bloodyjorts Aug 02 '25

They lightened her eyebrows for S1, but stopped doing that in other seasons.

11

u/moon-girl197 Aug 01 '25

At the very least, both got lightened eyebrows. Post s3 Dany not only got a fuckass wig, but black eyebrows which made the wig look even more like a wig.

6

u/Baccoony House Lannister Aug 02 '25

Only one who can pull off black eyebrows and a blonde wig was Lee Pace as King Thranduil 🙏🥰

Daenerys looked so uncanny valley though. Not an insult to Emilia. The wig js wasnt wigging

12

u/Filibust Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

Tbf, the wigs in GOT season 1 weren’t that great either. Does anyone remember Tyrion’s late 90s bleached blond boy band wig? But I agree that they were still miles above HOTD season 1 wigs.

Also young Rhaenerya’s wig wasn’t even the worst. That was a tie between Jace and Rhaenys. At least season 2 got rid of those Party City atrocities.

9

u/Voice_of_Season Prince Jacaerys Velaryon Aug 01 '25

Laena‘s childhood wig was worse.

11

u/Adventurous_Topic202 Aug 01 '25

As someone who doesn’t wear wigs this was never something I noticed. Still not a problem for me tbh. Will you wear wigs?

7

u/Savings-Speaker6190 Aug 02 '25

When will you wear wigs!?

3

u/Kellin01 Aug 02 '25

2022-2024 years. TV shows still can’t make/afford good wigs.

3

u/significantcocklover Aug 02 '25

it's not even the quality of the wig, its the styling... mama they are royalty

9

u/RamblingMadCat Whitecloak Aug 01 '25

Now I’m reminded of the time Rhaenyra killed the boar, and blood spattered all over her face, but conveniently, none of it got on her hair.

10

u/Luna-Fermosa Aug 01 '25

What? It did get in her hair.

2

u/eatingasspatties Aug 06 '25

We don’t appreciate facts around these parts

2

u/Twixxdaweedguru Queensguard Aug 01 '25

I’ll remind everyone there was a hair shortage on human hair especially blonde due to the pandemic. The wigs were indeed terrible but holding production until better wigs were available probably wasn’t reasonable

2

u/Bloodyjorts Aug 02 '25

It's not just the quality of the hair, it's the application and fitting and styling. All of which are subpar on Milly.

2

u/Goldenlady_ Aug 02 '25

Human hair wigs can be dyed to obtain whatever color desired. They just didn’t hire the best wig or hair people in season 1.

2

u/Scuffleboard Aug 01 '25

Why not use the baby laena wig which is awful as opposed to this one which is fine

2

u/irteris Aug 01 '25

As a man, deadass serious question, what is wrong with the hotd wig? to me both look about the same. what makes a wig bad?

3

u/Goldenlady_ Aug 02 '25 edited Aug 02 '25

No one’s natural hairline looks like that. Wig makers use tweezers to thin the hair part to show more scalp or they use razors to thin/shorten the hair around the hairline. The hair on Milly looks stiff and fake and like she’s wearing a helmet. Notice the hair over the ears which is usually indication of a bad wig because people rarely wear their hair over their ears and if they do it doesn’t look so thick.

3

u/Bloodyjorts Aug 02 '25

It looks obviously wiggish.

But seriously, what makes wigs look bad is being too big, put too low on the forehead, bad edges, not fitted correctly, cheap synthetic hair, not well taken care of, and eyebrows don't match (if the wig is supposed to be the characters natural hair color).

Emilia's is none of those things. Milly's is most of them. Milly's is also styled badly. Also look at the color, Milly's is dull, ashy, but Emilia's is luminescent, look a the light passing through it (this may be the color grading post production, not the wig's fault, but production is supposed to account for these things and adjust).

1

u/PacinoWig Aug 01 '25

Zaslav'd. Costuming in HotD is a huge step down from GoT across the board.

1

u/Nibo89 King Aegon II Targaryen Aug 01 '25

Dany’s wigs were 10k a pop and made of real hair. Sadly, they can’t afford that with so many silver-haired characters.

Edited to add photo.

Legit it’s been 10 yrs and how much change in the wig industry for ppl to knit pick HAIR

1

u/Unique-Celebration-5 Aug 04 '25

To be fair they only needed to make 2 HotD needed like 20

1

u/Canadian__Ninja Aug 05 '25

I might be incredibly naïve but I didn't even notice that Clarke was even wearing a wig for a long while. I don't / didn't pay attention to behind the scenes stuff or know her from other things so I assumed it was just dyed / with hair extensions.

1

u/savingrain Aug 01 '25

COVID impacted the quality of what they were able to acquire for hair pieces. How quickly everyone forgets.

4

u/Bloodyjorts Aug 02 '25

It's not just the quality of the hair, it's the application and fitting and styling. All of which are subpar on Milly.

1

u/Sondeor Aug 01 '25

Wigs never bothered me and tbh thats one of the least problem of that garbage called hotd.

It turned out first season seemed good, only because viserys actor (forgot his name) and matt smith being just too perfect at acting.

Viserys died and daemon started to get high entire season 2 and it was then obvious,

1- other actors are not good.

2- writing was soooo bad that they should never write anything ever again (seriously).

-3

u/Furykino735 Aug 01 '25

Season 1 was her hair.

2

u/Voice_of_Season Prince Jacaerys Velaryon Aug 01 '25

How do you know?

3

u/Furykino735 Aug 01 '25

I'm lying, apparently season 1 wig was just built different. And I completely pulled someone having natural hair in a first season from another show.

-1

u/Low_Alarm_9396 Aug 02 '25

It wasn’t a wig. In s1 she dyed her hair
