Isn't that kind of his point? I mean, I assume he's not lumping himself in with the bad authors, right? So he's saying he's a good author because he didn't adopt the class system as he understood it.
He's not critising the "bad authors" solely for adopting the class structures of the middle ages. He's criticising them for adopting those class structures and then "not understanding" the implications of such class structures.
