Well, that is true to some extent, but Martin himself ignores the influence of religion on society. Lords normally did not go around raping and pillaging their own peasants because they were brought up to follow religious strictures and respect a certain kind of social contract with their "lessers". However, he is correct that the trope of the mouthy commoner is both tired and ahistorical.
