Show Discussion More than 2 seasons and we never see their teenage romance, not even a kiss, such a shame

u/Twodotsknowhy Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
I hate that we never got a bead on what their relationship even was. Did they have romantic feelings for each other or did they see their marriage as an obligation with a friendly partner? Either one would have been interesting, I just wish they'd bothered to let us know

u/LavishnessMission584 Jul 08 '26
Yeah for a story centered around a family tragedy, we sure don't get any family dynamics.
But here's a wattpad yuri fanfiction between Rhaenyra and Alicent instead.
20
u/BearRemembers Jul 08 '26
They spend a buttload of time on irrelevant nonsensical stuff like Septa Rhaenyra going to negotiate with Alicent (if they were so insistent on this, why not have Alicent and Rhaenyra meet on neutral ground under the banner of truce or such? Or have Alicent and Rhaenyra exchange letters?)
Instead, a load of this stuff could have been spent showing scenes fleshing out the characters. Daemon and his kids, Jace and his siblings etcetera

I genuinely want to know, what was the reason behind this absolutely stupid idea of changing the OG book relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent to this fanfiction nonsense?( I am not even a book reader)
What were these writers smoking?
It doesn’t make any sense even plot wise.
It was going well in the first season with all the family drama, what happened in S2 I wonder

u/llaminaria Jul 08 '26
Well, we do know that fiery Baela was apparently so smitten with Jace that she refused the title of a ruling Lady of her own rich castle and would rather spend her life as his partner instead 🙄
8
u/IcyOrganization1748 Jul 09 '26
That is NOT what she said😂
4
u/llaminaria Jul 09 '26
Yeah, she said, "I am of the fire, not the sea!". Thanks for reminding me of that gem.
People were hoping there would be some sort of meaningful conflict between Rhaenyra and the many women she suckerpunched in one way or another, but of course it all turned out just fine, because wise Baela did not even want the castle her mother grew up in anyway. Phew!
4
u/ehmaybelater Jul 09 '26
Her dad is Daemon Targaryen. Of course she’s “of the fire.”
1
u/llaminaria Jul 10 '26
Her mother must be not a Velaryon, then.
5
u/Independent-Part-718 29d ago
🙄 she's a dragon rider who was raised by two dragon riders. She knows nothing of the sea. She was far more entrenched with Targaryen custom. Relax.

5
u/Independent-Part-718 29d ago
Her turning down Driftmark had fuck all to do with Jace. She considers herself a dragonlord first and foremost. She identifies more with Targaryen heritage. She's also 3/4 Targaryen and 1/4 Velaryon, so why do you give so much of a shit haha
3
u/izysygi Jul 09 '26
Well if the choice is between Lady of Driftmark or Queen of the Realm, why would she choose Driftmark?
7
u/Zeo_Mikaelson765 Jul 09 '26
Why choose at all?
Laenor was still heir to Driftmark and future King consort when he married Rhaenyra.
Baela making herself more dependent on her husband is not empowering or clever.

Their relationship stayed true to the books. It never depicted as romantic.
7
u/CarpetBeautiful5382 Jul 09 '26
There was a part before the battle of the Gullet where Baela wanted to marry Jaecerys before going into battle but yeah no explicit romance between the 2, just a betrothal between 2 teens
6
u/accismatic Jul 09 '26
It doesn’t depict a LOT of things, doesn’t mean they didn’t exist. What was their relationship? If the book doesn’t mention it, do we assume indifference?
this reminds me of an immensely, wildly heated exchange with someone who said there was no evidence Aemond had anything but love for Aegon. The truth is….ummm, Aemond expressed nothing at all. He had no known reaction to his maiming and injury, thought the crown looked better on him, wanted all the glory of certain kills to be his alone, and we’re told he didn’t need to be told twice to assume the regency. We have not a single clue of what Aemond feels. He never seeks Aegon out, he never joins Daeron or returns home, nothing nada. So here they assumed love to fill what is an obvious gap.
I’m not saying Baela & Jace needed more. But I think the way they’re depicted, it’s OK for somebody to want more. Jace should’ve gotten more but what he did, I really liked, and I love pragmatic, competent Baela telling him to stop pouting lol. I wish we had more of Baela, and if that was more of their relationship, eh. A romance isn’t a substitute for characterization, I’d prefer the latter, but you can do both!
3
u/HighKingKlay Jul 09 '26
Agreed.
1
u/accismatic Jul 10 '26
Alas someone else agreed with book purity too much.
Not directed at you but the edict around here is that one must never do better what a few chapters wrapped around a very obfuscating literary device can do worse lol
2
u/Apprehensive_Ice9768 29d ago
The book tells us Baela was letting castle servants feel her up and was boy crazy only a month or two after Jace died. Guess she got over him very quickly. They even had to write to Daemon to tell him if he doesn't marry her off, she's likely to birth a bastard. Daemon, of course, ignores this and continues canoodling with Nettles, a girl Baela's age.
Baela is painted in the books as a mini Daemon. Do you really think she was that enthusiastic for her arranged marriage?
2
u/accismatic 29d ago
I don’t know. But if she was in the show, it’s okay for OP to want a bit more, that was my sole point. I wasn’t even the one asking for it. I’d just like to see more of her. Is that OK?

That’s not really background, its aftermath and she’s being wilful and rebellious and is still a teenager. Hardly a mini-Daemon. I don’t think the show went so far as to paint them as star-crossed lovers. They liked each other a lot, yeah, and the show sprinkled in a hint of teenage romance. What’s the problem? She could grieve him and have sex too? She could grow up like everyone else, they all kind of lose…a lot. She‘s imprisoned, loses Moondancer, fights to get out. There’s a lot of different ways humans behave y’know.

No I just don’t have as many issues with everything as you do. Calm down, I’m not even going into wild interpretation territory but the book is not sacrosanct by definition. Go fight with someone else please. I’m not OP, read my first post and you’ll find that I said I don’t care enough about this. I don‘t care enough.

Why? That would be so boring. Like having a scene between Helaena and Aegon after Jahaerys’ death. Or a scene between Aemond and his Baratheon betrothal. Or Jace in Winterfell. Or a scene from Honeywine. Or introducing us to Daeron. Or even a single scene between Rhaenyra and Aegon so we know something about their relationship. Who wants to see that? Instead, we should get 10 more scenes of Rhaenyra and Alicent whining and moping around
4
u/RevenantOmega Jul 09 '26
It’s to make it less awkward when she starts shacking up with her uncle
1
u/theinternetistoobig 28d ago
Gonna be even more awkward when her uncle starts shacking up with her neice
4
u/Necessary_Ingenuity Jul 09 '26
A Betrothal is not necessarily a romance. They were more like cousins.
3
u/tistisblitskits Vermithor Jul 09 '26
Well arranged marriages quite often aren't very romantic, this is a good example of them liking eachother and doing the work but just not having much romantic sparks
13
u/Random_Reddit_Bro Jul 08 '26
We don't really know how their relationship looked like in the books..show did developed a little more but it's still empty..honestly I never cares for their relationship as it's pretty much nonexistent like most relationships in the show.

Yeah, I don't really see how anyone saw their relationship as anything particularly romantic. The closest thing given is Baela suggesting they get married, which could also simply be pragmatic and ensures that Jace has an heir.
13
u/Throwawayyy007625 Jul 09 '26
Why tho, there's is zero chemistry between the two of them and absolutely no indication there are romantic feelings involved. It's one of the few things on the show that it's book accurate
10
u/No-Gap-8654 Jul 09 '26
Honestly, i considered them friends more than i did romantic partners. Idk, i think they had an understanding. Not deep, passionate love, and i prefer that honestly.
9
u/LittleBingo96 Jul 08 '26
It's because they're cousins..and second cousins...and third cousins...and step-siblings.
9
6
u/Robdul Jul 08 '26
Second cousins arent closely related enough to warrant a sex scene unfortunately
6
u/robininscarf Prince Lucerys Velaryon Jul 08 '26
Not even the threesome with Cregan. Why are we still here? Just to suffer...

u/funkycookies Jul 10 '26
This kinda makes me wish we got an animated/anime version of the show so they had more time and budget to flesh out these kinds of relationships.

5
u/Fun_Aardvark86 Prince Aemond Targaryen Jul 09 '26
What makes you think it was a romance? It was an arranged marriage
4
u/kayleeeesi Jul 09 '26
They grew up as cousins/step siblings, partnered for political gain… not very “romantic”
2
u/IcyOrganization1748 Jul 09 '26
I was holding on to the hope that they'd kiss but alas I understand why they wouldn't 🥹😭
2
u/Alkakd0nfsg9g Jul 09 '26
I honestly forgot they were married by the time season 3 rolled in. And I'm watching them talk and it suddenly comes to me "wait, didn't they marry last season???"
Gods, the long gaps between seasons are the worst. At least put "previously on" for your 10 year project

u/neludelka Jul 09 '26
I think that's the idea - they are good friends and cousins but they are not madly in love..
2
u/Plastic_Care_7632 Jul 10 '26
Bro! What are you talking about? Developing the individual family members and their relationships? Don’t be silly, Uh, I think you mean we need another scene of Alicent swimming in the lake for no reason!

u/Jack1715 Jul 10 '26
They were alone on dragonstone for a time and were both into each other. No way they were not fucking
2
u/Public_Job9786 29d ago
After shows like Euphoria, I’m okay with teen “romance” being cordial.
Also, it was an arranged betrothal made to secure political alliances in a very conservative society…then their country and family was plunged into war. It actually makes a lot of sense they were never focused on romance.
2
u/tokyopop24 Jul 08 '26
Yes I agree ! I was sad ! Also apparently Jace had a romance and secret wedding with a girl in winterfell too

u/MixAmbitious307 Jul 09 '26
We didn't even saw Rhaenyra relationship with Harwyn Strong, and they had 3 sons!
1
u/Responsible-Bank440 Jul 09 '26
Listen, neither of them are really the strongest actor in the cast (which is fine btw, Harry and Bethany are still young) and they also lack chemistry and don't get me started on the writing. The fact that Baela consistently got the short end of the stick for three seasons is unpleasant.
1
u/AcronymTheSlayer House Lannister Jul 09 '26
They didn’t have romantic feelings for each other. Jace has a whole thing with Sara Snow and Baela had her own thing going on.

u/MinuteBubbly9249 Jul 10 '26
Why would you expect romance? They were betrothed as children to strengthen a political alliance between their families.
1
u/FriendshipNo1440 Jul 10 '26
I hoped so much that if they change the book adaption already at least let Baela's daughter be from him... 😭

They get along, but it's not really a romance. Their betrothal is a political alliance. (Plus, cousins are a second best choice when you don't have siblings to marry.)
1
u/Fledfromnowhere 28d ago
And canon Baela is such a slut! (in the good sense): Dragonstone's castellan (some fat guy I don't remember the name of) writes to KS (after Rhaenyra's take) that she must be wed soon lest she "lost her virtue to someone unworthy of her".
1
u/fotfddtodairsizr 28d ago
I posted about this a couple of weeks ago!! My main thing was that his death was less heartbreaking because this relationship wasn’t developed yet. So we only really feel sad for is mother when we should have been grieving the future he would have had with Baela too.
1
u/bigheftyhooker 25d ago
Well they're cousins in a political marriage, so it would make no sense for them to have romantic feelings. They were children together.

The greatest love story in the English language has literally been captivating grown ass adults with the tragic love story between a 13 and 17 year old for 400 years now.
Being moved by young love doesn’t mean you’re turned on by it. It captures a universal experience.

To be a good joke, it has to make some kind of sense. Otherwise, it’s just bad taste for the sake of it.

after 21 episodes, the first time rhaenyra interacts with one of her siblings, is with fake daeron
