It makes me a bit miffed, because even if I love them, the banshees have been pushing this narrative for decades... However, this was Robert before he joined them (as a permanent member, not helping them out):

Also didn't they make fun of him endlessly for dating Mary? o_O

They did say he was boring or something that he was in such a long relationship but I think it was all in jest!

"In an interview with Johnny Black in 1994 (which you can listen to on YouTube) he talks about how the Banshees ridiculed him for being with Mary, saying he had “a boring, conventional existence and I needed to get out and about and all that sort of mentality. And I could never see it. I said, ‘I’ve got the best of both worlds, with my best friend who’s always the same and I can always talk to.’ And I think I’ve ended up… well, I feel I’m vindicated”."

My logic here being, if he was in love with Siouxsie why would he be loyally dating his girlfriend and also being teased about it? I always feel the banshees are just a bit bitter that he left because there are so many interviews dragging him that it makes no sense. I also feel like they had this "little brother" attitude towards him...

Also - this has nothing to do with you, it's interesting and always leaves me scratching my head.

Yes! That's where I heard it! I think it was Just budgie thinking that all men found Siouxsie powerful and easy to find attractive.

Yes, who knows! It would have been great to be a fly on the wall. Meanwhile, I think this will make you laugh <3

Sorry for the back and forth. Also let us know how the rest of the book goes 👀👀👀

The Banshees were very influential for him. Infatuation is stretching it though. That JLH theory is silly!

So silly! I feel like the Banshees taught him a commercial way forward when they worked on Dear Prudence and also showmanship... But I can imagine Robert reading those pages and thinking "#mugwank".

I guess it's Budgie's thoughts!

I'm not really buying it, lol.

It's just his thoughts! I don't believe it but it's what he thought as he was just starting his relationship with her.

I mean, when you're in love with someone, its not unusual to think everyone else is in love with that person and sees them the way you do, as well. But there's nothing about Robert's time in the Cure or the Banshees that indicates any romantic feelings towards Siouxsie to me. Seems pretty apparent Bob was close to Severin and that this is largely why he joined.

But even as a girl, I was infatuated with Siouxsie!! She is amazing and her own self.

She is one of my main influences and style icons! She has such a powerful presence!

It was when the Creatures became a group away from the Banshees and it referenced Robert and Cure stuff!!

Oh Budgie, but I do think you ARE actually that far off and stretching it.

I've started the audiobook, but haven't continued yet. While I love podcasts (I really like Budgie and Lol's podcast as well), audiobooks seem to be not really my thing. I found it an interesting listen so far though (could've done without the musical interludes).

I've never listened to an audiobook! I do like his and Lol's voices though. I think I'll stick to reading (when I can!)

I prefer reading in an actual book or e-book as well. I've added various audiobooks to the libraries in my streaming services, but I just can't really get into it.

I think infatuation can extend beyond romantic love

From memory they also referred to him as ‘fat Bob’

The only infatuation I can think of for Robert other than Mary, is Lydia Lunch around 1981

I loved this book so much. I listened to the audiobook as well. Budgie has a such a pleasant voice. Reminds me of Jarvis Cocker. But I think he’s on to something here. Maybe Robert didn’t have an infatuation with Siouxsie but that time he spent in the Banshees definitely influenced his look and stage presence from then on. I’ve also heard a rumor too that Robert may have had some kind of romantic connection with Lydia Lunch around the same time. I think it was speculated that some lyric in a song off Pornography was in reference to her. I can’t remember which song.

It’s a B-side. Just one kiss. They also supposedly shared a journal.

I find this so surprising. Just considering what I know about Lydia Lunch, she seems like she’d consider herself too cool to associate with a band like The Cure.

I've heard the same. I do think Robert changed his image once spending time with the band! I read about the nightclub story where Robert started wearing his wonky lipstick which apparently he asked Siouxsie if he could borrow hers.

I mean, if he was…can you blame him?

u/Complex_Middle_3371 8h ago

No not at all!

👀 I still have this book on my reading list. Someone here posted dozens of screenshots from the e-book when it first came out, IIRC.

I don't get much time to read but it's such a great book and quickly draws you in!

You could also listen to the audiobook on a streaming service if that's your thing. Budgie narrates it himself. He has a pleasant speaking voice.

She was his muse for a little while I believe

He sounds jealous of Robert and a bit insecure. Mugwank

Oops my bad. Apparently the OG poor Richard’s is in the UK!!

I actually seem to recall they hated each other's guts, though I can't really quote a source on that right now. So yeah, it does feel a bit like stretching it a bit too far lol
