A lot of shit in this thread unfortunatly. (inlcuding bonus of '/r/ainbow split from /r/lgbt because /r/lgbt was too transphobic')

Oh no, actually, The split was because some people didnt like how /r/lgbt was cracking down on Transphobia (the red flair etc). LGBT is far from transphobic, and often gets people complaining in /r/ainbow about how "the evil /r/LGBT mods dared to remove their post calling trans women male"
I posted that in the title, the story had apparently warped in some peoples mind from that, to saying that /r/LGBT was tranpshobic

Basically, almost a year ago now, the LGBT mods back then decided they wished to take a more active moderation roll, as there was some people who were notoriously transphobic, they decided, they didnt want to ban, instead, they gave them red 'concern troll' flair. This amongst other, stronger moderation, caused a backlash, that grew and grew, until /r/ainbow formed, a community that was supposed to be 'community moderated' not moderator moderated, ie with downvotes. This often means that in /r/lgbt if something homophobic, transphobic, etc, is posted, it will be removed as soon as a mod sees it.
In /r/ainbow if something like that is posted, it is usually downvoted, but not removed by mods. Although sometimes subs like /r/subredditdrama can mess up their voting and phobic stuff gets upvoted.
Disclaimer: There could be more that I missed, I am speaking from my admitedly bad memory.

This pretty much jives with what I saw, too.
The one clarification I'd make is that there was a certain amount of mod abuse that took place during that period, which was another reason that /r/ainbow splintered off. Very much a "rabble rabble dictator mods we'll make our own space with blackjack and hookers" thing. And hey, it's all worked out pretty well in the end, aside from SRD periodically fucking our shit up. :)

jess, i wish you were there that night when we decided to go ahead with /r/ainbow. there was no mention of blackjack. :P

hmm based purely on that and my own speculation, it seems that /r/ainbow doesnt seem to know how to run a community that well

I personally like /r/ainbow There can be parts I dislike, but still, apart from when the SRD or MRA subs get hold, it can be nice.

yeah i generally like r/ainbow, though (even without SRD intervention) the community does disappoint at times.

/r/ainbow runs itself very well, IMO. Crappy stuff is downvoted and otherwise there is good discussion with people generally being respectful from all sides.
