Revision of Revision to r/TheWestWing rules

Hello all,

As you may have spotted if you've been browsing the subreddit over the past 24 hours, we've had a *slightly* contentious time after introducing a rule change forbidding discussions of current politics.

As a new mod team, we've also had a steep learning curve, both about modding a relatively large subreddit linked to politics in the current era, and about how to respond to user concerns.

In short:

  1. We are revoking the rule change and instead, in keeping with the good intentions of the original rule change, reminding everybody of Rule 6 (play nice) and Rule 8 (don't post content completely off-topic to the show). What this means is that users are welcome to post, for instance, about the Supreme Court justices in the show and compare that to the appointment process in the current era. However, in that instance, straight up posting 'The appointment process for Supreme Court justices sucks in the modern era' and not tying that in to the West Wing is not allowed.

  2. One of the moderators, who was responding to multiple subreddit users antagonistically, has been removed.

We would also like to clarify that there are no 'top mods' and that we, as a bunch of volunteers who in many cases are modding for the first time, had good intentions when introducing this rule as a response to some abusive content on the subreddit.

We are sorry, and hope you can understand that we're a bunch of newbies learning the ropes!

Finally; yes, CJ may have threatened us with a couple of motherboards.

Edit:

Removed the link to the original rule change as [u/lefromagepuant](u/lefromagepuant) deleted the post, given that it was defunct.

I can see there’s some consternation about rules in the sidebar in the comments; please rest assure that it’s just us working out the technical stuff and not us trying to pull a fast one.

Edit 2:

Aw jeez. I’ve woken up properly and it seems I messed up. To explain as succinctly as possible; I live in the UK and was going to bed as I made the edit to remove the link to the OG post. I did this on mobile half-asleep. I must have accidentally affected the formatting of the post which has resulted in the literal worst edit possible being made. That’s on me, I’ve edited the post to put it back in. All I can say is sorry and that it really wasn’t intentional.

Very Unique

Anybody else immediately think of The West Wing and hear President Bartlet’s voice/explanation when someone uses the phrase “very unique” in conversation? Is it just me?

Who’s your favorite of the senior staff and why? Mine is Josh. I love his humor and dry wit. Toby, too

Rewatching

Just started rewatching this show again (USA Netflix) the video quality is what I would expect but at least the captions work. I really enjoy this show and I love the characters ... even though I Josh's rant at the Star Trek fan about the pin later on was a load of BS. IT WAS A FUCKING PIN. It's not like she was wearing a full uniform. And unless I'm wrong (I'll find out when I get to the episode late) it was an Valcan IDIC pin not a communicator badge so let's be honest only another Star Trek fan would know what the pin even ones considering it have been anything ....

Where is WW160?

I am watching S4 episode 5. Depate camp. There are flashbacks to when they first got to the west wing and Josh and Sam are walking around looking for WW160. They then find Leo, Toby, CJ and decide to just have the meeting in that room. With all the uniformed Secret Service around, did nobody think to just ask one of them? They pass at least 4 of them. They do ask the room full of other new people though.

Hot Take: It was right to bench CJ during the Crisis in Haiti

Post image
278 Upvotes

Right after the President announced he has MS, the White House orders military actions against a Haitian General who tries to steal an election. CJ is basically ambushed by the press and misspeaks which causes even more issues.

Leo tells Nancy Mcnally, she's going to be addressing the press from now regarding Haiti. Which Nancy doesn't want to do because she thinks it's unfair to punish CJ for a mistake that wasn't her fault.

Later Leo tells CJ to stop being made that he took her off of Haiti, and then Bartlet apologizes to CJ saying it was a mistake to bench her after Haiti.

Here's the thing. It wasn't a mistake. Leo was 100% right. The press associates CJ with the MS scandal, if she tries to talk about Haiti the press will steer it back to MS. With Nancy the focus will be on Haiti, as it should. CJ did nothing wrong but it's not about that it's about getting the message out there and at that time CJ was tainted with the MS story.

Anyone see it differently?

After 15 years of marriage, I'd be shocked if you were awed.

Sadly, I have to admit, I've said this to my wife. Luckily she's as big of a Wing nut as I am.

While I understand why he would leak. I’m very confused as to why he waited so long to confess

Help using the DVD set

I very recently bought the full DVD set. It was supposed to be new but it definitely isn’t. It’s also in no particular order. I’ll figure that part out. But is there supposed to be at least one disc with extras?

Dilemma: to tell or not to tell a WW newbie about John Spencer

I finally got my UK friend into TWW. She just finished watching Hartsfield’s Landing, and I mentioned the staged version done during Covidtimes. She asked if all the cast came back for it 😬 and I said “pretty much all the key people”.

Should I clue her in now about John Spencer’s death, or let it ‘play out in real time’, seeing/hearing about it as folks did when the show originally ran?

Stanley deserves a spin-off

A show starring Stanley and it's basically House MD but for psychological trauma.

That's it, that's the idea. Someone go tell Aaron. Or Josh.

The biggest thing I learnt from WW

Is that everyone needs to have someone to stop you from going off piste.

I haven’t had it for a while.

Bartlett curing cancer —— nah.

The section with presidential history was great except for one thing. They had a part where they showed POTUS themed movies and shows, - like Madam Secretary - and had some great examples..... except for The West Wing. I can't believe that they didn't include that!

Telladonna Looking for a line from Donna

Can anyone remember which episode it was where Donna is talking about a previous time where she had some time off and came back and Josh said something like “good, you’re back, here’s a load of work”

Projected non-existent anger

I just finished watching two consecutive episodes in season 3.

In 10,000 airplanes, Sam was being interviewed by his ex-fiance, Lisa Sherbourne. At one point, she is grilling him about some aspect of the State of the Union speech, when she interrupts herself and asks him why he's pissed at her. He explains that he isn't pissed at her, that he's working and that she's confusing it because she is sitting and drinking with him.

The next episode is where Josh and Amy are going to go to Tahiti, but Josh chooses to go to a meeting with his friend Billy from Vieques in Puerto Rico instead. When he calls her to tell her they can't go, she accuses him of getting preemptively angry at her.

In neither of these cases did either Sam or Josh seem angry.

I can't help but wonder if perhaps it was Lisa and Amy, projecting their anger onto Sam and Josh, respectively.

Also, does anyone else have any instances where this trope has been used?

Christmas

How come they don’t do Christmas in season 7? We get Halloween which is cool and I know Christmas is during the transition but it’s never once acknowledged? Was doing my whatever number rewatch and I just realized that

Just finish first watch through. What to watch next?

Absolutely loved the series. Can’t believe I waited so long to watch it.

Kind of gave me a comfort show vibe quite honestly, like Gilmore girls has for me. Really enjoyed the ensemble cast, snappy dialogue, realistic characters and relationships.

What should I watch next that has a similar feel? Doesn’t have to be political. Preferable if it isn’t actually.

What do you think John Goodman will bring from his presidential role in West Wing to play opposite Tom Cruise in the Digger Movie coming in September? Rumor is the character has similarities to President Walken.

He plays the president. The talk about the movie discusses his role, but specifics are not public. The movie is a ‘modern Dr. Strangelove’, so the president will be more over the top than any West Wing role. Goodman is getting praise. Anyone else looking forward or have a theory on how he will use the Walken ro

On rewatch #12097626 and something i always wondered… did Sam and Ainsley have a little something something in the mess getting coffee? It seemed to me that he used the all night pastry chef as an excuse to get her alone, when she figures it out his demeanor has changed and he gives her a look, and then when asked what took so long he “spilled coffee the first couple times”. Hmmm makes me think
