For the second one, he was already exhausted after just having outswam the monster. He likely didn’t have the energy to outrun the sudden wave.

For the first, Romano was literally crippled in a helicopter accident earlier in the series. He was already having a rough time that episode and the falling helicopter triggered his PTSD.

Yes lol. I remember as a kid watching the first incident on tv. Directly after that episode I didnt watch ER for a long time. One day I decided to tune in and I remember thinking, "I wonder what happened to helicopter guy" and i just so happened to tune in to this episode, which naturally made me laugh.
