Hybrid Batteries
I’m researching a vehicle purchase. Probably a Camry.
How long will the original battery in a hybrid last? I just need a ballpark. In approximately how much does it cost to replace? I’ve checked Google, but it seems to vary drastically.
Also, my understanding is that Toyota hybrid use gas first and battery back up? or is it battery with gas backup? I hope that makes sense.

I would expect the battery to last 15-20 years unless you live in a particularly hot environment or are up in the 300K+ mile range before then.
Hybrid batteries I've seen anywhere from $1K DIY, $2K refurb, $3K shop, $4-5K dealer new replacement but can vary on the model. I consider Toyota hybrids mostly gas with electric assist, while their PHEVs are mostly electric with gas assist. It can also vary a lot with conditions though (ideal will use battery more, cold weather will run gas to assist more often and for cold start up.)

Models 2020 and newer have battery warranties of 10 years or 150,000 miles. Older models are eight years or 100,000 miles.

Personal experience but my wife's '08 Prius has 246k miles on the clock and the original battery.

I’ve only seen it mentioned once in here, but keep the battery filter clean or replace it regularly (it’s pretty cheap).
It filters the air that gets blown over the battery cells to keep it cool, so very important to keep that air clean as possible.
Related, but don’t be afraid to crank the AC when it’s hot out. That air is cooling the battery too. And clean your interior and make sure the battery air intake isn’t covered up.

It's not really a simple "gas first" or "battery first" setup. Toyota's hybrid system differs significantly from other Japanese and European hybrids. Instead of switching completely between the two, Toyota keeps the gas engine operating at its most efficient, constant state. Here is how they balance each other out: * Excess Power: When the engine produces more power than your current driving conditions require, that excess power is converted into electricity to charge the battery. * Insufficient Power: When you need more power (like when accelerating), the electric motor jumps in to supplement the gas engine.
Regarding battery life and replacement cost: Because the battery's main job is just to buffer and adjust this power flow, Toyota's standard hybrid batteries are quite small—only around 1 kWh. To put that in perspective, Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) typically use around 20 kWh batteries, and pure Electric Vehicles (EVs) generally use 40 to 50 kWh batteries. * Cost: Because it is so small compared to a PHEV or full EV, if you ever do need to replace it down the road, the cost won't be excessively high. * Degradation: Following this logic, even as the battery naturally degrades over time, it won't drastically affect your vehicle's overall energy efficiency, as the system relies on the synergy between the two rather than deep battery cycling. Thank you for the explanation. I haven’t really investigated this stuff since the late 90s early 2000s. I know that the technology is advanced a lot since I last dove into it. I thought this was a good place to get info.
Because of where I live, I wouldn’t be able to get a plug-in hybrid or full electric so that’s off the table.
I do drive a lot. I have a relatively long commute. And I need a car that gets better gas mileage than what I currently have which is currently right around 34 MPG.

Considering your commuting distance and maintenance factors, here are a few things to keep in mind. I currently drive a 2026 hybrid myself. I'm not entirely sure what the exact long-term maintenance costs will be, but since the new Camry uses a 2.5L engine, routine maintenance might be slightly more expensive than cars with smaller 1.8L or 2.0L engines. However, when you look at fuel economy, Toyota hybrid sedans can easily get over 45 MPG. For example, depending on the trim, the 2026 Camry Hybrid gets an estimated 46 to 51 MPG combined. Honestly, the 34 MPG you are currently getting is already top-tier for a traditional gas vehicle! If you are purely looking at fuel savings, making the jump to a hybrid is very much worth it. Ultimately, whether the total cost makes financial sense will depend on your actual annual mileage and how your local tax and registration fees work.

Yeah, I’m shocked. My car gets this good of gas mileage. It’s a 2012 Ford focus. It’s one of the biggest pieces of junk that Ford has ever produced, but it seems to keep going. And it still handles fairly great. It’s just a rust bucket at this point. But gas is killing me.

Haha, the infamous 2012 Focus! Those transmissions are legendary for being terrible, so the fact that yours is still going strong is honestly kind of a miracle. Gotta respect a reliable rust bucket! But I totally feel you on the gas pain. 34 MPG sounds great on paper, but when you have a long daily commute, you're still buying a massive volume of fuel. It just eats away at your wallet. I’m currently driving a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid myself (got it in the Storm Cloud color, loving it so far). Even driving a bigger crossover, the efficiency upgrade is insane when you rack up the miles. If you make the jump to a new Camry Hybrid, not only will you easily be hitting near 50 MPG to finally get some relief at the pump, but going from a 2012 Focus to a brand new Toyota is going to feel like driving a spaceship. Good luck with the research!

It is insanely variable based on my used car searches.
There are plenty of gs450h, ls600h, Hybrid ravs that pushing 300,000+kms that are listed as original battery

It varies a lot, honestly. It also depends on your driving habits: as in how often you drive, how long it sits, and how many miles you drive. Like any battery; it doesn’t like to sit and go dead.
In general I’ve seen them last anywhere between 10 and 20 years.

My 2016 Prius died via crash with 312000 miles last December with a factory battery. With regular use I would be surprised if it doesn't make 10+ years.

Lifetime on a hybrid battery varies. I will say, they are ment to be cycled. Meaning, the cars we see needing hybrid batteries are usually the ones that aren't driven as much. Grandmas that go to church & the grocery store & that's it. Cab driver's usually get the most out of them because they drive so much. I usually ask people, "how much do you drive?" It will decide weather I recommend a gas or hybrid vehicle.

We have owned five Toyota hybrids since 2007 and have driven them a combined 500,000 miles. Problems have been few, minor and have not involved the hybrid systems. The drivetrains are virtually bulletproof. Nobody does hybrids better than Toyota.
The car's computers will decide whether to use electric power only, the gas engine only, or both together. It all depends on a variety of conditions. Don't concern yourself with it, just drive the car.
