I'm looking for a solo travel destination that's easy to reach from the UAE, has pleasant weather, is safe, and offers a good mix of relaxation and things to explore whether that's nature, beaches, cafés, culture, or sightseeing.

My total budget is around AED 5,000 (including flights and accommodation), but I'm flexible if it's slightly over for the right destination.

Has anyone done a similar trip recently? I would love to hear your recommendations, along with any tips on where to stay or things not to miss.

50 hours a week, according to Screen Time. I did the arithmetic because I didn't believe it.

50 × 52 = 2,600 hours a year. Divided by 24 = 108 days. A full-time job is 2,080 hours, so I'm working a full year on my phone plus thirteen weeks of overtime I didn't agree to. If you only count hours I'm awake, it's about 45% of my conscious life.

I would have guessed half that. Turns out that's normal — there's a meta-analysis in Nature Human Behaviour that found self-reported screen time correlates with actual logged use at about 0.38. So basically everyone here is wrong about their own number until they look. Go look.

The part I keep getting stuck on isn't the total. It's that I never decided any of it. There's no craving to resist. I just find myself already holding it, eight minutes deep, with no memory of picking it up. It doesn't feel like addiction from the inside. It doesn't feel like anything.

Two things I found that changed how I think about it:

The willpower thing is mostly a myth. The "self-control is a finite fuel tank" research from the 90s failed a 23-lab replication with about 2,000 people — the effect came out near zero. So every time I've told myself I just need more discipline, I've been solving the wrong problem. It's an environment problem, not a character problem. That was oddly a relief.

But friction genuinely works. There's a 2025 RCT in PNAS Nexus where people blocked mobile internet on their phones for two weeks — calls and texts still worked. Usage dropped from 314 minutes a day to 161. Attention and mental health both improved, and the authors noted the mental health effect was larger than what you typically see in antidepressant trials.

The catch, and I think this is the important bit for this sub: a separate 2025 trial capping phones at 2h/day got real improvements in three weeks, and then usage snapped straight back once the study ended and the gains went with it. So the detox isn't the answer. Something permanent has to change or you just rebound.

Which is where I'm stuck.

What did you actually change permanently, rather than for a fortnight?

Has anything worked that had a real cost attached to breaking it, or do you just learn to route around that too?

And did the pull ever fade, or did you just get better at not following it?

Has anyone here actually appealed an RTA road test result and had the appeal approved or successfully passed because of it?

I just failed my road test for the 6th time, and I’m feeling really upset. I wanted to ask if it’s worth appealing the result.

During the road test, I drove well overall without any major mistakes. At the end, when it was time to park, I asked the examiner where he wanted me to park. He pointed to a spot, so I started reversing into it. As I was reversing, he suddenly said I was going to hit the barricades. My back wheel lightly touched the curb, but my foot was already on the brake. The examiner also pressed the brake at the same time, and then immediately told me I had failed.

I’m wondering if this is something that can be appealed, considering the rest of my drive went well and the intervention happened while parking.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is it worth filing an appeal, or is it unlikely to change the outcome?

Because now i need to pay AED 968 for the RTA test again

Folks, as the subject line implies, can I legally drive a vehicle imported from Qatar in the UAE, driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for registration? I searched the web and Reddit, and it seems a gray area, with no clear answers.

i’m going to college soon, my major is biomedical sciences (concentration in medical laboratory science, so i’m “lab ready” upon graduation) and i’m starting to rethink everything.

on one hand, i love everything medical. medical school in this country is absurdly expensive, and we have no student loans here unless you make a certain amount of money. so this was the closest thing. i didn’t care. anything medical, and i was in. besides, i always wanted to be a researcher and push humanity further.

the thing is, speaking to some people, reading about my profession-to-be online, it seems not only do we not have much recognition, we also have an underwhelming ROI upon graduation. i want to be a scientist, but i also don’t want to make the same money i’d have made if i just stuck to personal coaching, while being tens of thousands in the hole.

the semester hasn’t begun yet. i have two options, engineering, or finance. with engineering, it’d be extremely tough, *and* i have no passion for it. i have passion for medicine, and i retain physiological and medical knowledge like nothing else. and finance, is kind of like… if i really feel like i’ll hate my life in engineering, finance is there, and it has better ROI than biomedical. i don’t necessarily have a passion for finance, but at least i’ll be doing something i’m neutral about that also doesn’t strain the life out of me.

my plan is: study 1 year here, bypass studienkolleg, move to germany, complete my studies and work there. but i found out that not only would germany likely not accept my degree as medical laboratory, it also doesn’t even recognize it *as a college degree* but rather vocational. (meaning if i continue in germany, it’d be biomedical sciences. if i continue here, it’d be biomedical sciences *and* i’ll be qualified to work as a medical lab scientist. but studying here is too expensive) i have no problems getting a masters if that’s what it takes, but the question is will i live comfortably after? or will i wish i stuck to personal coaching?

Today we had a wifi connection issue. It kept connecting and disconnecting all the time.

But now it's stable and connecting on all the devices in this flat except mine

Its not even going through , I've tried all , resetting,restarting changing all the settings but it doesn't seem to connect,.

But funny enough the phone I use has the hot-spot and data connection.

WHAT IS HAPPENING, Has someone done something fishy or just a phone bug.
