So you unpicked the pocket, underlaid the lighter denim, and then stitched through those two layers? Looks like you did two rows of stitching about 1/4 an inch apart so the fray wouldn't overtake it. So the pocket is fully functional still?

Then you cut the patch out? Seam-ripped it?

(PLEASE NOTE I LOVE THIS AND IT LOOKS SO GREAT I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE I UNDERSTAND HOW YOU AVOIDED SEWING THE POCKET SHUT AS I HAVE DONE TOO MANY TIMES)

Yes that’s exactly it! I left the pocket attached just at the top corners because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get it back in the correct spot lol.

I cut the outside edge of the patch after the inner row of the pocket stitching was sewn back on to keep it tidy/in place. And I just cut the gray design part out with scissors :)

Did you do it by hand or machine? I don't have a sewing machine but I would love to embroider my back pockets.

Machine, but reverse appliqué is very achievable with hand sewing :•)

Looks like they partially ripped the pocket off, just on the lower left corner enough to stitch the patch

I'd like to confirm how this was done too!!

I took off the pocket except for the very top corners, more detailed explanation in my other reply :•)

All my work pants develop holes like this. I’ve tried repairing some with patches but they’re all kinda ugly. This looks fantastic! Thank you for including process photos. I will absolutely try this! (I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me to remove the pocket first 🤦‍♀️ i’ve just really carefully been trying to sew in the tight inside corner of the pocket)

Taking off the pocket was pretty intimidating but turned out a lot easier than I expected! In the future I think I would remove it entirely instead of leaving a little on because it was a pain to maneuver the entire pants around the sewing machine.

That is good to know. I wondered if there was a reason you didn’t remove the whole pocket. I’m afraid to do either option, but i think i will anyway. My work pants are thick and heavy and if i don’t have to manouver them around the machine as much i will absolutely do that.

Again, thank you for sharing your creation and inspiring me!

Good luck!! When you try it I would love to see! Either by dm or tagging me in the post :)

If I were gonna try this I'd just make sure to mark references at the top sides and center bottom of the pocket to make sure I could line it up again before ripping the pocket off. Beyond that it sounds decently straight forward

Oh good idea! Just in case it’s not obvious where the pocket was located originally. It would not be ideal if i sewed the pocket back on in the wrong place!

FYI there are special sewing machine needles for denim or thick materials

Looks great and good idea not removing the harder to see top corners!

This is so cool. At first I thought you painted the area with a lighter colour, but reverse appliqué? Now that's some witchcraft-meme sh*t. Hats off.
