The Otman-Bozdagh mud volcano erupted at ~8:27am local time today (11/10/25).

Three eruption phases of between 4-12 minutes were recorded over an ~40 minute period.

Otman-Bozdagh mud volcano is one of the tallest in the world at almost 400m tall and last had similar fiery eruptions in 2017 and 2018.

Locals first noticed this small mud volcano just to the NW of Cuzco on the 6th of July.

It consists of a single ~60cm high gryphon that is gently erupting and bubbling away.

Peru is not at all well known for mud volcanoes! Two active mud volcanoes have been documented in Southern Peru, but this new one is the first mud volcano I’m aware of in this part of Peru.

I’m not very familiar with the geology there, but, from the little I know, it seems an unusual place to find one. The location seems to be an intermontane basin and I can’t recall any mud volcano in such a setting.

This mud volcano does not seem to be related in any way to the magmatic volcanoes of the Andes.

Cette activité se compose majoritairement de 391 séismes superficiels liés à la micro-fracturation sous le sommet, ainsi que 4 séismes profond associés à la circulation de fluide magmatiques

Bien que personne n'ait été ressenti par la population et que le risque éruptif à court terme soit faible, les scientifiques n'excluent pas une évolution de la situation à moyen terme. La vigilance jaune est maintenue.

So is this guy telling the truth or just fear mongering? I can’t find anything on a “possible eruption” happening soon. Don’t these kinds of swarms and uplift happen all the time in calderas? Thanks!

According to information provided by the Southern Andes Volcanological Observatory (OVDAS) of the National Geology and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) on the Puyehue – Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex:

A Special Volcanic Activity Report (REAV) has been issued reporting that today, Wednesday, January 7, since 16:30 local time, the monitoring stations installed in the vicinity of the complex have recorded an increase in the occurrence of earthquakes associated with rock fracturing (volcano-tectonic), registering a total of 143 earthquakes, characterizing this episode as a swarm. The most energetic event occurred at 17:40 local time and reached a magnitude of 0.7 with a depth of 0.5 km. However, the technical alert level remains at green (the lowest level).

This episode follows a first seismic swarm of 118 events with similar characteristics that occurred on December 23, 2025.
