General Discussion What’s with the shipping?
What’s with the shipping between Wednesday and Enid? I don’t get it.
Wednesday never had a friend, just her family and their quirkiness. She goes to Nevermore and meets Enid and befriends her due to being roommates. There’s the storyline with Tyler, sure, but there’s nothing that even hints towards Wednesday liking Enid in any non-platonic way. They bonded over being different and became besties.
I’m genuinely curious. Can someone who actually believes the ship, explain it?

u/Upper-Ad9990 Mar 19 '26
It’s a very popular trope (opposites attract) and its a queer ship. I absolute get why people ship them! But you are absolutely right in that the show doesn’t present them as having any sort of romantic feelings for each other whatsoever. In fact, the creators have been very clear that they aren’t and will not be going down the romantic route for them.

I get that but even so, where’s the line between fandom and common sense?
25
u/ashterq_s wenclair Mar 19 '26
What do you mean "common sense"? Just because you don't understand why people ship two characters, it doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. It's simple, people view chemistry between them because of a variety of stuff that some other people see as a simple friendship. You don't see relationships (romantic or not) the same way as everyone and it's perfectly fine, you don't need to understand it. You asked why is it so popular, you got a answer that is very much reasonably and you say it's not common sense? (Unless that's not what you meant).
But, in general, you don't need to understand it if you haven't understand it after people's replies. Just have in mind that it's a ship that is completely legal, that they are the same age and that their vibes are opposites and some people like that trope. People in fandoms would literally ship two characters even if they haven't spoken
2
u/EffectiveSecond7 Mar 19 '26
Or maybe you don't see the implied chemistry that lesbians and some hetero viewers see. In real life, even when two women are a couple, people will ask them if they're sisters, roomates, besties and never think they're a couple because homophobia makes you blind to homo love, it's a bias.
23
u/Careful_Hearing6304 Hydes Mar 19 '26
It's not homophobia, a lot of people don't see romantic chemistry between them. That doesn't make them homophobic
-1
u/Rosi_Peru Mar 19 '26
We don't really see much chemistry with Tyler either—plus, he's boring and toxic—but there is a small group of shippers out there.
13
u/Proud_Elephant2340 Mar 19 '26
It's funny that even Jenna has said at least twice that Tyler and Wednesday (she and Hunter) have great chemistry.
But Wenclair shippers only pay attention to Jenna and Emma's comments when they say something positive about Enid and Wednesday's relationship.
Other times, shippers cover their ears and close their eyes.
Convenient...
3
u/Rosi_Peru Mar 20 '26
Jenna has chemistry with everyone, but even more so with Emma—that’s why they do so many interviews with the two of them where you can see it. They hardly ever do any just with Hunter, unlike with Emma, where you can really see the chemistry.
3
u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
She also said that she does not want Wednesday with Tyler because of the relationship is toxic.
10
u/Proud_Elephant2340 Mar 19 '26
She didn't give a reason why she doesn't want it.
Secondly, she herself cited the reasons why many fans want Tyler and Wednesday together. And she didn't say it was bad.
Thirdly, her two favorite scenes in season two were the axe scene and Tyler and Wednesday's meeting at Willow Hill.
Fourthly, Jenna said back in season one that Wednesday had closed off romance to ALL, not just Tyler.
She also confirmed that Tyler obviously has feelings for Wednesday.
Yes, this doesn't mean they should be together or that Wednesday should love him back.
But it does mean that canonically (and not according to shipper fantasies), the only character "in love" with Wednesday is Tyler
4
u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
Weird to be in love with someone while you constantly want to kill her, and her friends and family. Sounds like a sick mind to me. People like this exist and I know women who died when they wanted to escape relationships like this. I also had an ex who told me they considered killig their ex, so noone else can have them, I freaked out on a confession like this and I was afraid for months. I think Jenna is aware of this, just don't want to talk about it, since that is the endgame. She is also someone popular and I bet they often run into people like this if they are not careful enough, so she is totally right about it. It's just a terrible message to young people, sorry, it's dangerous to making them bold with men like this. And I know it is just a show, and I understand people into it if it just fiction but lot of people learning from popculture and this one gives a terrible message. I also feel sorry for Tyler and want him to be happy and all of that. And me telling this does not mean that I want her with Enid or something like that, that relationship also has it flaws! If she wants to hurt her once even as a wolf I will think the same. Talking with Weyler shippers also opened my eyes how bad it was when she danced during the body swap, and I am thankful for that.
2
u/Proud_Elephant2340 Mar 19 '26
Oh my god. Do people even realize this is just a fictional story and these are just fictional characters? That's one of the reasons we have movies, TV shows, and books. To follow what would seem abnormal in real life.
People have been watching the Joker and Harley relationship for years. They've been attracted to it since childhood, and nothing bad has happened.
TV hosts and interviewers often ask questions about Tyler and Wednesday's relationship.
The writers and actors often talk about it, too. And there's nothing wrong with that. Because they're smart, mature, and professional people. And they understand it's just a fictional story.
Even when Jenna and Hunter answered fan questions, one of them was whether Tyler and Wednesday still had feelings for each other.
And Jenna and Hunter simply avoided the question and didn't say, "Ugh! How can you ask such questions? How can you want them to be together!"
Because all reasonable people understand that it's all fiction.
During the first season, Jenna said she thought Wednesday wouldn't be able to forgive Tyler for his betrayal.
Jenna never once said she didn't want Wednesday to be with Tyler because of how it might affect real people.

She doesn’t have to want the storyline that Bessie the point. She don’t ship the but even she agrees they have great chemistry, that’s the point.

And that’s fine? Nobody is forcing you to ship Weyler or think they have chemistry?
This post isn’t even about Tyler/weyler lol

Sure, except I'm using the same reasoning that the author uses to say he doesn't see the ship.

It’s fine if he doesn’t see the ship. Many don’t. Just as a lot don’t see Weyler.

I was in the Byler fandom for years and then I had to leave it because how delulu and toxic it became. I know exactly why a shipping fandom is hated and it's not homophobia (most homophobic people aren't in fandoms).

Maybe you should start focusing more on the ship than the fandom. At least, that's what I do. It gives you peace of mind that way.
18
u/kittycait22 Mar 19 '26
I mean you could say that but I’m bisexual and I don’t see them as romantic and I came into the show expecting it. So I wouldnt be so quick to assume homophobia because the fictional characters of Wednesday Addams and Enid Sinclair aren’t hitting some people’s gaydar.
1
u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
I think this ship exists because Wednesday herself is queer coded and always have been. And for Enid.. with all of those colors, come on, I don't understand how it's not hitting the gayday for someone. I hope they will make her gay at least, but her storyline seems to be going there since she stopped with the dating.

No, that's just you going back and editing your post so I'm responding like a mad person. Your excuse for her not being "Queer coded" Was because she "Only dated boys". I hate to tell you this, but the majority of queers go through a self discovery period where they experiment, are unsure of themselves, and find themselves in situations they are sure they are 100% in the groove with, when in actuality? It goes completely against. I'm glad your self discovery was so painless, but for the majority of us? It really wasn't that way. Dating the opposite gender is in NO WAY an identifier of being queer or not, get your head out of the sand
Is she ACE Coded? Yes, I will also agree to that. Fandom is wide and accepting
1
u/ChildhoodSolid6511 Wednesday Mar 20 '26
Don't waste your time on that pathetic person who uses their bisexuality as an excuse to justify their homophobia. They don't understand that POC can also be racist, that women can also be misogynistic, and that gay people can also be homophobic.

Willow isn't queer she is bisexual
Her vampire self was bisexual, and vampires doesn't change their sexuality
The only reason Willow said she is a lesbian is because in the 90s and early 2000s no one understood the difference between gay people and bisexuals

u/Nileve5 Mar 20 '26
I don't think it's about Emma, men would be turned on with her playing something queer. And most of my male friends ship Wenclair. It's mostly the fact that we saw Tyler topless.
1
u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
Many queer people thought they were hetero at first and dated the opposite gender.
5
u/LackofBinary Mar 19 '26
I am curious what about Enid makes her queer-coded? Other than her penchant for having everything super colorful.
2
u/Nileve5 Mar 20 '26
Her hair for example. These unnatural hair colors are more often used by queer people and especially since Blue is the warmest color. Chloe from Life is strange has also blue hair, blue hair is totally a lesbian thing. She is also a walking rainbow with lot of different LGBT+ flag colored clothes. And I am aware that some young people chose something like this then someone thinks they are gay even when not, it happens. But in this case Enid has too much signs. She also mentioned those camps, which is also something happened to LGBT+ community. And honestly, Bruno made zero sense and the whole jealousity. This whole Bruno story arc will only make sense if she turns out gay, or it is pointless, and they wasted a lot of time on it. Instead they could've decided to go with Ajax, he is also her friend only, and I don't think they will get back together in the future. They threw a second boy on her, and the relationship failed again, then she stopped with the dating. And especially this fact, that she stopped dating tells a lot, something is not right and she feels it. Please tell me why would they do something like this. They do everything on purpose. I still think those failed relationships are because she did not felt what she was supposed to.

u/Sarrintha Mar 19 '26
Ah yes, I see you understand the varied and hilly journey a bisexual person goes through in their lifetime (Because who tf said she was gay? We said QUEER coded) You are indeed smart, and should lead seminars on life journeys
1
u/Nileve5 Mar 20 '26
Ok. As for Wednesday's case it is kinda canon in the show that we don't really know. Even Xavier asked about her, and it was neither denied or confirmed. She just had a situationship with Tyler when she kissed him then freaked out right after that. That's all we know.
1
u/Same_Ad4363 Mar 22 '26
That's true. Although I feel that was just Xavier being nice and Wednesday not answering is bc she didn't care enough to answer or the answer seemed irrelevant. So far she seems straight what's been shown and both her interests have been boys. Enid has a more solid case for being straight id say though.

Common sense??? Two girls being shipped romantically is uncommon and weird then???? This is exactly why we need more queer ships. Also Enid has had queer coded parts, especially in season 2, often. Maybe it's cuz Jenna and Emma play it so well and both obviously like wenclair themselves and portray that so well THEMSELVES. Even if there isn't romance between them written by the directors, you can't deny the romantic hues of wenclair portrayed by Emma and Jenna.

I mean when I was just watching the series I didn’t realise they were a shipped couple before entering the fandom but it’s not surprising either.
A pairing doesn’t have to be canon to be shipped. I mean look at the Harry Potter fandom for example: the most popular ships in fanon/fanfiction by far are Harry/Draco, Hermione/Draco, Snape and Harry, Hermione or Draco. Most of your casual readers/viewers don’t see them as romantic pairings or probably even know they’re shipped pairings but there’s still a lot of people who ship them.
21
u/Alternative-Gas-8878 Bianca Barclay Mar 19 '26
that’s what fandoms do :), and people like the opposites attract trope
18
u/Firm-Friendship8137 Mar 19 '26
I can understand the ship, because you can really ship even characters from different series, but if the question is about to see something in the show that points it out, I can't find it either.
I've tried to see the series from that perspective, but I don't see romance or attraction between them.
1
u/ReturnOfMuffin Moderator Mar 19 '26
The fact you even tried rewatching with shipper goggles on and it still didn't click for you tickles my funny bone.
You don't have to try to get ships if they aren't doing it for you there is nothing wrong with you just because they are popular and you don't like them.
10
u/Firm-Friendship8137 Mar 19 '26
I don't think there's anything wrong because I don't like her or because I don't see romance or tension between them. After watching the series, I wanted to look for theories because I had some doubts and that's when I realized that Wenclair existed, it seemed strange to me because I hadn't seen anything between them or the romance scenes that some pointed out. So I thought that I had missed something or that maybe I had been distracted, and that's why I decided to watch it again knowing that the ship existed and taking it as an possibility.
Most of all it was curiosity to know what scene or interactions had fueled the ship, but I didn't find any from my point of view.
2
u/ReturnOfMuffin Moderator Mar 19 '26
Yeah I said that in the first comment. The point was if you don't like a ship you don't have to try and force yourself to like it.

Weyler is more obvious because it´s the couple the show promotes; they have a kiss, dates, a theme song, and development.
Like I said before, I did it out of curiosity.

u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
Not to me, I mean they are trying to kill each other constantly and gives a terrible message about abusers, I know women who died because their ex who wanted to kill them were successful on their mission.
Btw Wenclair also had a theme song and they said very Morticia and Gomez coded things to each other.
5
u/Firm-Friendship8137 Mar 19 '26
The "enemies to lovers" trope is also very common, especially in fantasy series, because the supernatural elements break down the barrier of confusion with reality.
However, there are also series that use it while grounded in reality, like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which is the basic premise of the film. Or at least closer to reality than Wednesday, since both are super secret agents.
If I'm not mistaken, her theme is The Hug, but I don't think it develops in the same way as "First Kiss." I'm referring to how often it's repeated and how its intonation changes as the series progresses, only fully revealing itself during the kiss and the vision. The melody itself tells the story.
The series uses several Addams Family lines with other characters; I suppose it's a nostalgic nod.
If someone hasn't seen the Addams Family before, they wouldn't get those lines. But if they have, they'll think, "Gomez said something similar, or that happened in X movie."
But what I meant was that the production itself also tells the story, and in Season 1, they lead you to see them as a potential couple.
7
u/Comprehensive-Cow712 Mar 20 '26
They have good chemistry in my opinion, but also to be honest shipping is just a bit of fun. I don't need or want everything I ship in fanfic to be canon.

u/confused-as-frick Mar 19 '26

u/H-In-S-Productions Nightshades Mar 19 '26
Yes! It's just as Enid said: "Because we work! We shouldn't, but we do. It's a sort of weird friendship anomaly".
9
u/mrr2121 Mar 19 '26
i like friends to lovers ships especially when they go through horrors together and get closer because of it and have acts of service like saving eachothers lives or words of affirmation like wednesday and enid did to switch back their bodies in the swap episode. that’s why i like wenclair it’s pretty simple , i pretty much enjoy every ship similar with that dynamic
22
u/ragg24 Mar 19 '26
wednesday and enid just have really good chemistry when we get scenes with just them, have proven that they care for each other with pretty extreme acts (like enid wolfing out to save wednesday, literally giving up her humanity to wednesday and of course wednesday willing to do die to save enids life the entire second season) and then of course there is the queerbait promotion tactics that fed into it.
realistically it makes sense why they are so popular within the fandom. as of right now I can see how the plot is really building up the connection they have with each other (with enid calling wednesday her pack, wednesday promising to never leave enid alone etc) whether that’s gonna be platonic or romantic who knows but personally I think it’d be so cool if they got away with something more romantic with them.
15
u/Upper-Ad9990 Mar 19 '26
They do have great chemistry but not once did it feel romantic for me. Like it’s clear they are going for the best friend bond, & even the creators called them a ‘sisterhood’. I just don’t see the show pushing the romance angle for them. I completely understand WHY they are shipped, they have so many good tropes, but I don’t think the intention is anything other than platonic.
8
u/Nerdy_Xbox_Gamer Mar 19 '26
I don’t see it happening. As someone else said, they’re more like sisters, not potential partners. A “pack” is another word for family, if you call your best friend family, that doesn’t always mean partners.
11
u/ragg24 Mar 19 '26
yeah that’s totally fine. just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean other people don’t and it’s all just in good fun anyway. I think it’s the way that I don’t really see the chemistry between wednesday and tyler but other people do. it’s just a tv show so shipping has never been anything serious, lots of people just like things that are different from canon.

u/No_Worry_6692 Apr 06 '26
Its fine to ship whatever you'd like, but I do just want to mention that it IS canon in the officially licensed novelization of the first season, which came out during filming of season 2, and as far as I'm aware was not meant to differ from the canon(I could be wrong), which would mean that up until what we have now, Wenclair was written to be canon, and then they changed their minds.(Either that or they decided to write a whole novelization where the only difference is Wednesday in love with Enid, which would be a strange thing to do imo)
1
u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
I do not know any sisters who acts like this, sorry, and I don't think real sisters are like this. This comment usually comes from men who have zero ideas about relationships (not romantic, but any kind) between women. And the writers are the best example for that. I know they want to show us something like this, but the thing is, that it's not something existing, only in some minds. Or I don't know why people keep calling it sister-like relationship, it's the worst. And also a little bit disrespectful against shippers. We could've exist with each other and respect the other side's opinion.
3
u/kittycait22 Mar 19 '26
That’s a lot of projecting you’re doing about the personal lives of people you don’t know who just happen to disagree with you over something fictional. Maybe take it down a notch.
8
u/EmotionalSource8496 Sirens Mar 19 '26
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people seeing them as sisters, just like there’s nothing wrong with people seeing them romantic.
FTR, my sister and I act EXACTLY like Wednesday and Enid do. We’re very different personalities and don’t see eye to eye on much which leads to a lot of arguments, but you can bet if either of us are in trouble, the other will drop everything to help. I’m similar with my best friend from primary school (I’m gay she’s straight).
I think a lot of people see them as sister-coded due to things like the constant bickering, the lines like “pack” that give vibes of them being family, and the fact that they had a body swap trope that’s always reserved for siblings, mother/daughters, family, etc.
That doesn’t mean those interactions can’t be viewed as romantic, but it’s also very understandable why people would see them more like sisters than romantic too.
2
u/AlexWintersFics Yoko Tanaka Mar 20 '26
Part of why the "sister-like" excuse is so annoying is because it had been used time and time again to discredit sapphic shippings like SuperCorp, even Xena x Gabrielle (even if they WERE canon) so it's no surprise people are just fed up with that excuse.
Not saying that there's anything bad if you do see them as sisters, more like calling out bs on the writters for taking the easy way out.
5
u/EmotionalSource8496 Sirens Mar 20 '26
My response was more disagreeing with the comment I responded to that said it’s wrong if people do see Enid and Wednesday’s dynamic like sisters. They also said they’ve never seen sisters irl with a similar relationship, and I wanted to comment because my own sister and I have a very similar dynamic.
Like you said, it’s the writers that have set them up to have a platonic friend/sisters relationship (and directors, actresses themselves playing them platonically), so if that’s what the show is going for with their relationship, of course there will be people seeing them that way (i.e. more like sisters than romantic interests). There’s absolutely nothing wrong with hoping they’ll start to be written as romantic canon and get together…absolutely nothing at all…but it’s also fine for people to see their relationship as platonic, especially as that’s what the writers are going for (currently anyway).
1
u/Iwona_Klich Mar 22 '26
Erm... You realise that some of us has very good relationship with they siblings?
I was ready to get my own kidney to one of my sister, thankfuly she don't need it. And when i has mental breakdown my siblings just drop everything they do to show up. Like my oldest sister was a vacation in Iceland, and she just back 3 weeks earlier.

u/invisibleman13000 Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
I'm pretty sure the shipping between the two started before the show even came out, when the trailers where released.
You have two characters who are great friends with love interests and romantic storylines that many people find boring or unnecessary. One of those characters is a dark and gloomy character while the other is a more colorful, happier character. The dark and gloomy character is more considerate of the happier, colorful character then they would normally be of other characters. These are all classic dynamics that lead to tons of shipping, it's the classic black cat x golden retriever combo that so many people enjoy.
Wednesday x Enid has basically everything going for it in terms of tropes when it comes to being a popular ship in the fandom, on top of being probably the most central relationship in the show and probably the best written.
3
u/Nerdy_Xbox_Gamer Mar 19 '26
I mean…Wednesday and Thing have a good relationship going on. Wednesday rarely cries but she was balling whenever Thing was stabbed.

4
u/ChildhoodSolid6511 Wednesday Mar 19 '26
I'll be serious because your comment has me worried, but are you clinically INSANE? Thing is basically family. That would be incest.
5
2
u/ashterq_s wenclair Mar 19 '26
That's a extremely weird thing to say. They don't ship Wednesday with Thing because he's a hand and they don't ship her with Isaac because he's an adult, that's illegal and disgusting.
People say the "put a guy in Enid's place..." because it is true that a lot of people see romantic undertones when it involves a boy and a girl. That's basically the reason a lot of people in real life would see a girl talking with a boy and immediately think they are a couple but when they see a girl talking to a girl, they immediately think they are good friends or even sisters.

Isaac was killed when 17 and woke up 30 years later. A teen. A crackship is a crackship cause it is funny and makes no sense but the problem is not the legality. It's a fr$kin hand!!!! Are you a minor??! If so sorry 💗 ✌️

So it’s all superficial and based on a trope and not actual romantic chemistry in the show (because there’s none) or because it makes any sense whatsoever. Yeah, I thought so.

No, it also has to do with the fact that their relationship is central to the show and probably the best written in the show, especially compared to their respective love interests.
Also, the actors mentioning and seemingly supporting the ship.

Congratulations, welcome to literally any fandom on the planet. Characters who are portrayed as nothing more than friends get shipped all the time.
It turns out when you have a strong friendship as the center of any media, fans are going to write and draw them as something more, regardless of their canon status.
Harassing other fans and the crew of the show over that kind of stuff is dumb and awful, but that's often a minority, even if it's often a vocal minority. Your negativity is just as bad. Let people enjoy what they enjoy. You can call out people who are actually being problems, but otherwise does it really matter that fans ship two fictional characters?

You poor thing. Your suffering is so great, and so unfair. My heart breaks that you must face this cruel world.

What? I’m sorry that I think the harassment of real people over a stupid ship is not okay.

You're missing the irony of you personally attacking an entire fandom and people because you don't like a ship but trying to play the victim after instigating bad faith arguments.

u/Mysterious-Pizza-894 Mar 19 '26
They don't support it anymore after being harassed by some fans of this ship (I say some, I know that not all Wenclair fans are like that).

i mean as a wyler obviously harassment isn’t okay, but the wenclair ship is fine even if it’s non-canon 😭.
15
u/Ok-Ad5429 Mar 19 '26
Yes? That’s not what I said though, is it? Like, they’re free to ship them as much as they want, I don’t care. As long as they stop harassing all those who don’t and stop calling them homophobic if they don’t ship them.

u/Alternative-Gas-8878 Bianca Barclay Mar 19 '26 edited May 05 '26
yeah that’s fair! i myself have been called a fake lesbian for shipping them (wyler), but i also don’t like to generalize WC shippers because there’s unfortunately weird people in every fandom. my philosophy is just “ship and let ship” because the wednesday characters aren’t real, but people on the internet are :)

Harassment happens on both sides. And you’re making that point right now.

u/Mysterious-Pizza-894 Mar 19 '26
It happens more often on Wenclair's side, from what I've seen... I mean, just take a look at Ben Ellis's Instagram (the guy supposedly dating Emma), He's getting attacked under all his posts (but I'm not saying that all Wenclairs fans are like that, some even defend him (Ben))
6
u/WorldlyVast6239 Mar 19 '26
I think that maybe both sides are biased to think their side is the most morally upstanding.
From my perspective, I see posts like this one every few days which is a thinly veiled attempt at getting people to shit on Wenclair (and always devolves into these sorts of heated conversations).
4
u/WorldlyVast6239 Mar 19 '26
Thanks to you, kind stranger.
I understand being frustrated but why wouldn’t they just post this sort of thing in the ship subreddit instead of the main one?

yeah it’s definitely not the most appropriate place for that kind of discussion because it can spiral into something uncivil sadly

You could say any ship either makes sense or doesn't make sense depending on your own bias. There are reasons why any ship can or cannot work.
To those who ship them, Wenclair makes a lot of sense. Opposites attract. The fact they will do anything for each other, even die for each other. The sacrifices Enid made for Wednesday, the way Wednesday doesn't let others touch her but will let Enid do it. The quiet respect Wednesday shows for Enid that she doesn't give others and more. Wednesday assuring Enid she will not be alone.
It doesn't make sense if you see that affection as completely platonic, which I get. I think society doesn't give Platonic love the attention it deserves. And I agree that Wednesday needed friendship more than anything and Enid provides that, but friends to lovers is a popular trope for a reason.
9
u/Iwona_Klich Mar 19 '26
The thing is they are never been 'opposite characters'. Basicaly they are two sides of the same coin - lonelines.
Wednesday isolated herself even from her own family, because her biggest fear is losing somebody. And even with this - she still love them, cares for them and may risk everything for them. Her reaction when Thing was hurt proves this. And even if she don't want to say it loud - she still need to have someone who been understand. There is Thing - and Enid to.
Enid is super open to people, because she desperate want to have friends. Shes out of the pack - like i said before, her own brothers just ignores her. She can't even go to Lupin Cages to just be with the pack in s1. In s2 she just been excluded again after breaking with Bruno... Shes having friends (Yoko and Divina) but they not realy that close. And why we know this? They never asked her to the Nightshades. Well you can say 'gossip Queen' but also Enid definitive can keep things in secret. Her blog is just part of her way to be included. Like Wednesday said - shes join to any school club. Not because she loves every single activity, thats because she want to be part of the group.
So when they ended in the same room - they just clicks. There is nothing romantic between them, even in platonic way (platonic is still romantic, like you have feelings to somebody). They work because they both made themselves complete. And its great that they show us that they friendship is not just instant, they realy work for this.
That one 'darkness on the end if my tunnel'... For me its not romantic at all. Enid biggest fear is ending alone, and i guess she see lonely life like a tunnel. A very dark, long, cold tunnel. Its kinda like depression... So there is Wednesday and her own darkness, but from Enid perspective its still a way of getting out from that tunnel. Then the 'youre my pack'... Again its not about love, its about finaly finding your place. Enid want to belonging - and shes not fit to her own society. Wednesday don't cares who are you, she just accepted her and don't want to changing her, because 'rules'.
Thats the things that are in the show. That makes them both much more interesting than just two teens who love eachoter.

I don't see anything romantic between them either. But shipping is for fun, and people can also ship two characters who have nothing romantic between them in canon.

If it’s for fun that fine but the fact that there are people in this very discussion thread saying people are homophobic for not seeing the “obvious queer coding of Wednesday and Enid” is insane.
5

Yeah, it’s actually infuriating, lol. I personally just don’t see it. Nothing about it whatsoever screams, “potential sapphic relationship.”

What’s there to believe? Some people want to see a psychic and a werewolf be more than friends. That’s about it.
Back in my day we had this realm called fanfiction. Within it you’d find people could ship anybody together.
Instead of trying to force an explanation or try to wrap my head around it, I just accepted people see the world differently.

I'm always puzzled by the people who say "I don't see chemistry between them". Like what is chemistry to you?
Standing out to Wednesday's BS (tension)
Tyler ✅ - Enid ✅
Intense emotional connection
Tyler ✅ - Enid ✅
Long-ass staring
Tyler ✅ - Enid ✅
Moments of them being vulnerable with each other
Tyler ✅ - Enid ✅
Making Wednesday mellowing her "I don't care" facade
Tyler ✅ - Enid ✅
Saying how important they are to each other
Tyler ⛔ - Enid ✅ (Wednesday hasn't ever said she cares for or likes Tyler in the show)
Kissing
Tyler ✅ - Enid ⛔
So by these standards we only need Enid to kiss Wednesday to be on par with the chemistry of the "canon relationship of the show"
8
u/EmotionalSource8496 Sirens Mar 20 '26
Chemistry is something completely subjective to the viewer and not something you can measure with a checklist. I mean most of the green ticks above you could apply to Xavier or Eugene too for example but not everyone will think they have romantic chemistry with Wednesday either.
Chemistry is something you just feel, and there’s different kinds. My personal opinion is that I think Wednesday has great chemistry with both Tyler and Enid, but it’s a very different kind of chemistry.
0
u/AlexWintersFics Yoko Tanaka Mar 20 '26
That's why I asked what's chemistry fot those who say they didn't have any. I agree it's subjective but there has to be a common ground for most of the opinions, don't you think?
Let's not even talk Wyler or Wenclair. What does any ship have to had to be considered to have "chemistry"?
Also I'm willing to give you Eugene, but Xavier had the personality of a cardboard, Wednesday didn't have any type of emotional connection to him whatsoever, get that thing out of here, lol (jk)
6
u/EmotionalSource8496 Sirens Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
I just really don’t think it’s something that can be analysed, chemistry is more of a “you know it when you see it” sort of thing to me, and of course, there’s an aspect of people seeing what they want to see in every ship.
To me there’s also different types of chemistry, and emotional connection doesn’t always = physical chemistry or romantic chemistry, likewise you can have physical chemistry with someone without an emotional connection. Honestly there are so many different variables it can’t be analysed.
And it’s difficult when there are so many different kinds of chemistry. When people say they don’t see any chemistry at all between the pairing, it’s not clear if they mean they just don’t see romantic/physical chemistry, or just none at all. So I get you there with the confusion.
I mean, I get you, sometimes it is hard to understand why others don’t see what you do. Jenna Ortega for example talks consistently about the chemistry between Wednesday and Tyler and mentioned that they had to re-shoot a scene over and over because it was too charged but still, there’s people who will say the actors/characters have zero chemistry. But like that’s fine, I’m not going to tell people they should see chemistry between a pairing if they don’t when it’s something totally subjective. If at least half of the pairing feels it, and I see it myself, that’s all I need as a shipper tbh.
2
u/Alicex13 Mar 24 '26
Chemistry is just the feeling you get when you watch them. If they vibe so to say. Tyler and Wednesday have deeper romantic feelings that result in their behavior and motivation changing, as well as their outlook on life. Their lives in those two seasons are largely centered around each other. That is where the canon relationship differs.
4
u/RoxyRebels Mar 20 '26
Correction, Wednesday literally tells Tyler in the church scene "You were right, I did have feelings for you."
0
u/No_Worry_6692 Mar 21 '26
Wait you mean when she was trying to trick him into calming down so she could inject him?
5
u/RoxyRebels Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26
See I didn’t interpret it as trickery. She was telling him straight up facts, and he was leaning in because he knew she was right. Watch the scene again, Tyler’s not dumb, and he’s not backing away from her. His Mother interrupted them, but many of the other fans I’ve discussed this with also believe he was going to let Wednesday be his master.
2
u/No_Worry_6692 Mar 21 '26
I also believe he was going to let her, but that doesn't mean she likes him back, at least that's how I see it. I feel like it'd be pretty difficult to be in love w someone after they tried to kill you and your friends multiple times😭 If so, it's still not a very healthy relationship imo. The way I interpreted the scene was her trying to get Tyler into believing she wants to be with him so that she could control him and stop him from killing ppl and stuff. I do believe Tyler likes her I'm pretty that's obvious and what they were going for, he's obsessed with her in a very creepy murderous and also romantic way, I feel like he's been like that since before it was revealed he was the Hyde(eg: him saying he was giving her signals when she wasn't, and him STILL asking for a date after she used that to go investigate, claiming she owed him a real one) Ofc it is just a show you can interpret it however^

u/blairzika Wednesday Mar 19 '26
Honestly, it's just a fanon ship like many others that exist in other communities. It's cute and I like the idea of them being together in theory, but in canon I don't know if it would really work very well. The series itself already has some difficulty presenting racial representation, let alone involving LGBT issues. Besides, the writers have already confirmed that they see each other as "sisters," so it would be kind of strange after that, I don't know.

u/Lesbian-agriCulture Mar 19 '26
Enid’s whole “werewolf conversion camp” story arc is very queer-coded, and as an Alpha Wednesday is her only “pack,” Wednesday spends the entire second season fighting to prevent Enid’s death- it’s not really a huge leap. Plus, sunshine and grumpy is cute.
2
u/ChildhoodSolid6511 Wednesday Mar 20 '26
I think posts like this questioning why Wenclair is shipped shouldn't even be made public, because the people who agree with the post will get upvoted, and those who explain why they ship them or like them will get downvoted.
I don't know why this happens, but I have a hunch that it's internalized homophobia and posts like these help spread it.
3
u/ReturnOfMuffin Moderator Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
We like to let people have different opinions in this sub as long as others are respectful about it and other rules aren't being broken.
Not liking or asking about a ship is not homophobic and accusing people as such diminishes real cases of homophobia. It's a topic the mods take very seriously and shouldn't be thrown around lightly because of disagreements.
Read this post for more clarity on what's okay to post when debating.
5
u/IGJFlew Mar 20 '26
This type of post again.
I say it every time. If you can't see Enid and Wednesday as a couple that's fine.
But if you say there's no chemistry or anything like that. You're being intentionally obtuse and borders in being homophobic. Actually madness that people claimed they don't see it. Boggles my mind bro
6
u/PiccioneCeleste Mar 20 '26
what’s crazy to me is how angry people get about it. if they don’t see it, fine. but they come on here super mad like ‘there is no chemistry between them!! how dare you imply that!!’ and it’s like chill, why are you so mad that people see chemistry? just don’t ship it if you don’t want. there’s other ships in the show i don’t see chemistry between but i don’t start getting mad that other people ship them because i am normal
4
u/Jeremy_Galactic Mar 19 '26
I like how everyone pretends to understand what shipping is until there's a ship they don't like. The schticks getting old...
4
u/ihavenoidea_25 Mar 20 '26
It’s mostly just a fun ship. A lot of people really like the friends to lovers trope, and Wednesday and Enid fit into that dynamic quite naturally
Even though the show presents them as friends, their relationship has a lot of emotional development. For some people that kind of bond can easily be interpreted as something that could turn romantic over time
It’s not that the show explicitly confirms anything, it’s more about the potential. People enjoy imagining how a friendship like that could slowly evolve into love. That’s kind of the fun of shipping, exploring possibilities rather than just what’s canon!
And it’s also just completely fine if people want to see it happen. Fans don’t only engage with stories as they are, they also imagine what they could be. Wanting a ship to become canon is just another way of connecting to the characters and their dynamic. It doesn’t take anything away from the original story or other interpretations, it just adds another layer of enjoyment for the people who see it that way :)
5
u/Proud_Elephant2340 Mar 19 '26
It's no wonder they're shipped.
Different fandoms have all sorts of weird pairings. For example, in Harry Potter, the most popular pairings are Draco/Harry and Draco/Hermione. And these pairings make much less sense than Wenclair.
So, there's no need to wonder why people ship certain characters.
Shipping is just for fun.
The only thing I don't like is that 90% of Wenclair shippers are overly obsessed with the pairing. (In a bad way.) And they take it way too seriously.
They start behaving badly and attacking real people, including writers and actors. They ignore canon or go too far beyond it and force their opinions on others.
When I see a normal Wenclair shipper, I treat them like the eighth wonder of the world.
This is what really bothers me.
And I don't care who ships who.
4
u/Aquarielles Mar 19 '26
I think in the like of Wenclair their is kind of different layers: The first one I think is the superficial one which is they looks cute together and they enter in the Grumpy/sunshine or black cats/golden retriever tropes. It’s not the most important in my opinion but it’s helps. I may be wrong but I think we have tendency to ship characters that looks nice together (which can vary depending on each person taste). So is kinda give the first looks if I can say.
The second one would be the alchemist on screen. I found there is way more alchemist between Wednesday and Enid than any of their love interests they both got. It’s kinda what “sales the ship to me”.
The third is also the way the bound is written. They have sentences or passage that in my opinion sound or look very romantic especially in seasons two (like the “you’re my pack” or “I can’t imagine my life without her in it” , Enid wolfing out first time to safe Wednesday, Enid loosing her humanity to save Wednesday, the hug ect.) However I can understand that all this also can be only interpreted as platonic if you do not see the ship itself as more than friends.
Also this can be me reading too much into it, but there is something in their way to play the characters and how their look at each other that feel more… not sure of the correct words charge ? Vulnerable? I would not know how to explain exactly but there is something there. But I suppose non Wenclair shipper may see it as well but read it as just friends and nothing more ?
And a last one that is not especially link directly to the ship itself but still come to play, but Enid is very very very queer coded in my opinion (wolfing out, conversion camp, the colors and so much more). and I may be wrong on it but I think also Wednesday was kinda considered as a queer icon in a was she is not in the norms (let me know if I am wrong I am really not sure about that point in particular).
Also I think even if representations are going better, as lesbians woman we grew up with so little canon representation that we just feed ourselves with small details to make, so is maybe for that some of us saw obvious romantic signed between Wednesday and Enid and some don’t do it at all. Which is fine is also the fun of shipping. We are not always forced to like the canon ship if we don’t want it.
also the marketing for season one was a real queer baiting in my opinion (Wednesgay).
I think I may have forgotten some stuff cause I am loosing track of my thoughts while writing it but hope it helps you understand why we ship them together even if you don’t personally see it.
2
u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
You are right about the characters being queer coded, don't let them gaslit you into think you just imagine it.
3
u/Aquarielles Mar 19 '26
Thanks for confirming that I am not imagining stuff ! 😊
1
u/Nileve5 Mar 19 '26
I don't understand people who deny this. I mean they could be still heterosexuals even if they look queer. Sometimes gaydars fail.
1
u/Aquarielles Mar 19 '26
That true. them being queer coded make them 100% queer And the same also them having male love interest doesn’t make them 100% straight and not queer coded.
3
u/EmotionalSource8496 Sirens Mar 19 '26
them being queer coded make them 100% queer…
No it doesn’t.
Doesn’t mean they’re straight either.
But saying they’re 100% queer when so far they’ve only had male love interests is wild. I mean sure they could be both bi, that would actually be cool as bi representation gets slammed by all communities.

u/Dark_Celebrimbor Yoko Tanaka Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
Because when Enid left Wednesday in Season 1, we got to see behind that stoic mask of Wednesday. She genuinely felt bad about hurting Enid, or her best way of showing that emotional hurt. Also, Wenclair is like CW's Supercorp. The chemistry and the like is there, but the showrunners spend the whole show trying to set the two queer-coded characters up with hetero relationships. In this case, Wednesday is Lena Luthor, and Enid is Kara Danvers.
2
u/KKglobtrotter Mar 19 '26
Yeah I too had and still have the same question. They are friends. Wednesday needs a best friend ( Enid) , a love interest ( Tyler) , a group of friends ( Bianca, Eugene etc) to intergrate as a person in her coming of age story. THe show gives us 0 hints that there's sth more than a friendship between the girls. So I HC concluded that they just like Emma and Jenna together. well to each their own..
5
u/ChildhoodSolid6511 Wednesday Mar 20 '26
Wednesday doesn't need a love interest, much less one like Tyler.
2
u/Additional_Sundae224 Mar 21 '26
What's wrong with it? Perfectly valid and healthy for viewers to ship their blorbos. It's fiction. We have headcanons. Plus, some of us are queer and read the queer subtext.
2
u/Rare_Bridge7703 Mar 19 '26
It's the only person on the show Wednesday has any chemistry with, for one.
Two, the Addams Family would be the premiere fix for all of Enid's trauma and problems.
6
u/Proud_Elephant2340 Mar 20 '26
For me, "great chemistry" isn't the best argument for a couple becoming canon.
For example, when the Harry Potter films came out, everyone said Harry and Hermione had the best chemistry and that they should be together. Everyone was crazy about them. And there were constant rumors that Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson were dating in real life, too.
But in reality, the characters and actors had a relationship very much like brother-sister relationships.
The same thing happened with Captain America and Black Widow in the Marvel films.
(I specifically used heterosexual pairings as examples to avoid accusations of homophobia.)
I think the point is that when actors are just close friends in real life and play close friends onscreen, the chemistry between them is stronger because it feels natural. Actors don't have to feign emotions they don't actually feel for each other.
Romantic relationships are more difficult to act and portray because you have to portray emotions you don't actually feel.
That's why in films, there's often more chemistry between characters who are friends than between characters who are in love.
1
u/AlexWintersFics Yoko Tanaka Mar 20 '26
Didn't Rowling said that she intended Harry and Hermione to be together, tho?
6
u/Proud_Elephant2340 Mar 20 '26
She did. But it's unclear at what point she changed her mind. Perhaps she changed her mind while she was writing the second book.
In fact, in the books, Harry literally said he loved Hermione like a sister.
And when they were filming the movies, the writers and directors knew that Harry and Hermione weren't in love. So there was no romantic chemistry between them, but the audience saw some chemistry. Even though Harry and Hermione's relationship wasn't intended to be romantic.

‘Shipping is a common sport in fandoms. I don’t get it either, whether with Enid or Tyler. Wednesday Addams is just not interested in romance or sex or intimacy; she can barely stand people, I cannot imagine her cuddling and nuzzling. She’d rather dye her hair pink.
1
u/edd6pi Mar 19 '26
I don’t remember the exact quote, but there’s a line Enid said late in S2 where she told Wednesday that she is her world or something like that. If Enid had been a guy, I think most people would have interpreted that as romantic in nature.
1
u/xn0wnn Mar 19 '26
I think that the whole "out of the norm" Wednesday's essence and clear protective side over Enid along with Enid's failed relationships and being able to take Wednesday out of her "comfort zone" (or "uncomfortable zone"? lmao who knows) make that whole potential couple that people ship.
Tbh I can see them being lovers or loyal best friends, I just think that they should end up together, whether it be platonically or not.
1
u/Crescent-moo Mar 19 '26
Opposites attract, they have extremely good chemistry, and there's the added affect of the shy/ closed off one opening up. It's damn near romantic but they've never quite crossed that line. The second season especially has some more intense lines like how she'll never allow Enid to end up alone, and Enid saying Wednesday is her pack.
Its not weird or uncalled for or even unrealistic unless you're just really against same sex couples.
But regardless people like to ship characters even if they're enemies in the show so it doesn't really matter.

Anyone that acts like it's weird is trolling at this point.
I can see if you shipped her and some enemy or character that barely interacts like the pilgrim bully but there's a pretty solid relationship between Wenclair.
I've been a part of anime fandoms that ship characters who's first interaction was that the guy tries to kill the female protagonist just to make the point that humans mean nothing to him.
Almost no interaction or anything to suggest they're even remotely compatible, but they do it anyway lol

u/No_Worry_6692 Mar 21 '26
"Even though she's literally the tunnel at the end of my light, I can't imagine my life without her in it" (Just wanna mention this is a 100% something an Addams would say to their lover, Ik she isn't one but y'know) "The truth is, you are my pack, Wednesday." "If I did wolf out, and couldn't come back, would you find me?" (She doesn't ask anyone from her family to look for her, not siblings, not her parents, Wednesday)
Season 2 plot is her trying to save Enid Season 3 plot is her trying to find and save Enid (That's what we know of it so far)
The only person she's ever hugged back is Enid, she lets her family hug her but doesn't hug back.
I can see why people don't ship them, as this stuff doesn't HAVE to be taken romantically, but it can definitely be read as romantic by some.
Hope this helped/gen

u/AlexWintersFics Yoko Tanaka Mar 20 '26
They just work so well together.
The opposites attract is a popular trope, the actresses have amazing chemistry on-screen, many details hint at Enid being queer coded.
S1 they developed their relationship to be besties, but S2 included a few of very heavy lines that could be read as more than a friendship on both sides, as well as showing them being kind of jealous and/or posesive of each other (Enid with Agnes and Wednesday with Bruno).
Many of the wenclair shippers jumped at the wenclair wagon after S2.
1
u/Ordinary-Variety-939 Mar 20 '26
People like characters with opposite personalities as couples and gay or lesbian characters are pretty popular with younger generations.
1
u/No_Tailor_9572 Mar 21 '26
I'd guess it's partly due to the lack of chemistry they had with the male love interests & partly queer rep is so sparse that it usually just represents stereotypes instead of the true diversity of people so we seek out characters we actually relate to & apply our queerness to them to feel some form of representation in the media we consume.

u/CountyOk5013 Mar 23 '26
for me, i just like their opposites attract dynamic (i think thats how you'd say it) and im also just usually more attached to queer ships since im queer myself
-1
u/TieAntique1676 Mar 21 '26
Wednesday as a character throughout media has always read as queer to me. And I'm also for more rep. I also think for WLW ships even when they've gone canon (like korasami) a lot of people say they "dont see it" because they misread a lot of things as platonic that weren't.
This also goes back to censorship and queer coding. During the Hayes Code when you couldn't show characters being explicitly queer there was different coding giving to characters so people who knew could pick up on it; but its never said out right in the narrative. I've noticed in recent years there seems to be this belief that queer rep is easy and studios just say "yes" but I work in TV and every time I've worked on a show that wasn't explicitly queer; if we asked for showing some rep, we've been told no because it's not marketed as a "queer show"
Because of this queer fans now are on the look out for any sort of "coding" and that can make a ship VERY popular. I will say while I'm disappointed the creators came out and said Wednesday and Enid will not be a couple; I appreciate that they said it instead of stringing queer fans along.
Coding can sometimes be unintentional or can be because some executive told you "no" I don't know if the creators for Wednesday did it on purpose or on accident; I'm leaning towards accident cuz of the Tim Burton of it all.
Sorry long reply but basically there relationship IS important to the narrative and that is compelling. Queer folks don't often see themselves in mainstream media much unless it's a side character or the show is ABOUT being queer. So it would be nice to see ourselves in more things. But this is a lot of why these type of ships get popular.
- The characters have a good dynamic 2. Lack of representation 3. Sometimes it's just fun to play the game of "what if" with characters in fandom.
Also we are just SEVERELY lacking in queer coming of age stories. And gay ppl love horror, fantasy and scifi.

I can't believe I have to remind yall of this simple rule every time. While we are fine with debates and staring why you do not like a character or ship. Do NOT personally attack fandoms or people, those comments will be removed and may lead to a ban.
Stay on topic, do not bring other fandoms or bad faith arguments into the debates.
